A person will never truly know whether they are cut out to be a fighter until they’ve actually experienced it firsthand.

For some, that first baptism of fire will leave them in no doubt that they are not cut out for a career in MMA, while others will come away convinced that they have found their calling in the heat of the battle.

In this article, we’ll go back to the very beginnings of 10 MMA stars’ journies into the sport to uncover memorable stories of their earliest fights, both inside and outside the cage, that helped forge them into the warriors they are today.

Vitor Belfort

In October 1996, a 19-year-old Vitor Belfort took a plunge straight into the deep end of the MMA pool by agreeing to make his debut against Jon Hess at SuperBrawl 2 in Hawaii.

The teenager had to travel all the way from Brazil for the event despite the fact that he had nothing more than a verbal agreement and would only be paid if he won. Furthermore, the rookie was going up against a giant, as Hess stood 6′ 7” tall, weighed 300 pounds and was coming off an 83-second TKO victory at UFC 5.

As if that wasn’t enough, Hess was demanding that there be no rules, including things like groin strikes being legal.

”Tell him he can also go get a knife,” Belfort says his coach Carlson Gracie defiantly told SuperBrawl. “He can go get a gun. We’ll still fight him.”

Gracie’s confidence in his young protégé proved to be well-founded as ‘The Phenom’ would knock out Hess in just 12 seconds to instantly put himself on the MMA map.

While not the strongest card on paper, UFC 221 actually ended up delivering a night of entertaining fights from Down Under.

Yoel Romero scored one of his patented third-round knockouts over former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, Mark Hunt lost to ever-intriguing heavyweight prospect Curtis Blaydes, and Tai Tuivasa lit up the hometown crowd with a quick TKO win before chugging a beer from an audience member’s shoe.

UFC 221 wasn’t as bad as everyone was predicting, and could actually be a launching spot for several rising stars and possibly a new champion who is over 40.

Taking that in context, here are the five best fights for the UFC to make following UFC 221.

5. Tyson Pedro vs. Misha Cirkunov

Tuivasa’s brother-in-law Tyson Pedro scored a first-round slick submission that will move him ever closer to a top 10 fight.

To properly build this potential Australian light heavyweight star, the UFC is going to have to bring him along slowly, which they’ve done well thus far.

Cirkunov would be the perfect match up to see exactly where Pedro is at. Although he’s stumbled a bit in recent outings, those losses have occurred to Volkan Oezdemir and Glover Teixeira.

If Pedro can put on a similar performance against Circunov, he would be right where he wants to be within the light heavyweight division.

Pedro threw out a leg kick, but it was caught and he was taken down. He got back up quickly and broke free. Safarov was cracked with a right hand, but fired back with some strikes. Pedro got into a rhythm and showed his technical edge.

Pedro was able to land some shots on the chin, so Safarov went for a takedown. He got it and appeared to hit his opponent in the back of the head. Time wasn’t called. Pedro locked in a kimura standing and forced his opponent to the mat to finish it off.
