It’s crazy to think that it was seven years ago, at UFC 100, when Dan Henderson planted his legendary right hand to the chin of Michael Bisping to create an iconic moment in mixed martial arts history. The two bitter rivals had served as opposing coaches during a season of The Ultimate Fighter, and rather typically for ‘The Count,’ he’d got under the skin of his American nemesis. The resulting KO win for ‘Hendo’ is quite possibly the most replayed moment highlight reel finish in the sport.

How things have changed since that day; Bisping after smashing Luke Rockhold in their rematch at UFC 199, is now the middleweight champion of the world. Henderson, although also victorious by way of comeback knockout over Hector Lombard on the same June 4 pay-per-view, is now eyeing retirement in the near future. Currently ranked number 13 in the 185-pound division, the 45-year old American hero may well get the opportunity to leap the rankings for a repeat showdown with Bisping given recent events.

Michael Bisping has steadily ramped up the trash talk since winning the belt, with many top contenders appealing for a fight with the newly crowned boss of the division. Not surprisingly the fans only want to see one fight for Bisping’s first defense, and it sounds as though bot the champion and Dan Henderson are on board for this epic rematch.

Bisping recently blasted Henderson as a ‘cheating old piece of sh*t,’ claiming he’d love to ‘put him in the grave’ and get revenge for that harrowing knockout at UFC 100. The highly decorated wrestler, former two-weight Pride FC champion and MMA legend Henderson has responded during this TMZ interview, as transcribed by MMAMania.com:

usa-today-8600667.0[1]

“I’ve never really paid much attention to what he says, it’s entertaining to me. It’d be pretty funny when he just yaps his mouth again and ends up getting his ass beat by an old man.”

“Over the years since I had fought him I really didn’t have a reason to fight him again,” added Henderson. “I couldn’t have knocked him out better the first time around, so he’s going to owe me two after we fight.”

For some reason, even with the glaringly obvious argument of the rankings in play, this fight has a nostalgic feel that just cannot be ignored. Perhaps it’s the festive feel us MMA fans get around the anniversary of UFC 100 and on the eve of UFC 200 month, or maybe we are just so intrigued to see if Henderson can finally win UFC gold.

Either way, as you’ll see in the interview with Hendo, it sounds as though the promotion are keen on making the fight happen.

Michael Bisping Calls Dan Henderson ‘Cheating Old Piece Of Sh*t’

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping finally made it to the top of the stack at UFC 199, claiming the belt from his bitter rival Luke Rockhold in dominant fashion. Avenging his 2014 loss to ‘Rocky,’ the English 10-year UFC veteran placed a precise flurry of punches to the jaw of Rockhold, sending him to the canvas with his eyes rolling in the back of his head. Quite the finish from Bisping, and a dream come true after so many losses in title contender fights.

‘The Count’ had said that taking the fight with Rockhold on short notice would actually benefit rather than hinder his progress at UFC 199, but few believed that would be the case. As it turns out, not ‘over thinking’ and ‘over training’ really paid off, and now the British banger is enjoying the spoils of the coveted title.

But there’s unfinished business in many forms for the new 185-pound champion. Firstly, the feud with Rockhold is far from over. They shared a hate-filled post-fight press conference on June 4, where Bisping took every opportunity to belittle and mock his fallen opponent. It was bitter-sweet in many ways, as following their first fight Rockhold was far more respectful, but at the least you can say ‘The Count’ is no boring champ.

But his trash talking did land Bisping in a very compromising position in the past against Dan Henderson. The two had served as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter reality show, where the outspoken Englishman really got under the skin of the American MMA hero. The resulting knockout win for ‘Hendo’ at UFC 100 will go down as one of the greatest and most replayed finishes in the promotion’s history.

Few can forget that iconic snapshot in time, a moment where Henderson put to rest the beef with Bisping in front of a jubilant partisan crowd. Among those who haven’t forgotten is Bisping himself, and he recently stated he’d love to get the rematch with ‘Hendo’ as his first title defense, and as Henderson’s retirement fight.

But now he’s taken it a step further, totally blasting his old foe in an explicit tirade during this recent interview.

Well this just got a little more interesting…

After years of being a trash talking hooligan of the UFC’s middleweight division, Michael Bisping finally backed it all up at UFC 199. His stunning first round knockout over Luke Rockhold was followed up by a stream of fighters wanting a piece of ‘The Count,’ and not surprisingly given the number of rivalries the brash Englishman has racked up during his storied UFC career. There was even talk of an immediate rematch with Rockhold, before Bisping himself shot them down in short order.

The talk of a rematch with Dan Henderson has also been rife, even though the rankings would play against that fight, ‘Hendo’s’ classic knockout over Bisping at UFC 100 and the fact he only has one fight left is making that match very possible and also extremely marketable. But then former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s name got throw in the mix.

In a recent interview, as quoted during a recent LowKick article, newly minted UFC 185-pound champion Michael Bisping said a fight with Georges St-Pierre would be an enticing idea.

“As you said, fighting Georges St-Pierre [would be] great, and of course for the title for who has the most wins in UFC history…I mean, that alone is a fantastic tagline and great promotion.

“I do want to defend the belt, and I want to make as much money as I can in the process. So, I would certainly be open to sending Georges St-Pierre back to a movie set because that would be a fight I would definitely win and if Georges St-Pierre is listening, any time you fancy it, just be a man and sign on the dotted line and your return will be short-lived.”

It looks like Georges St-Pierre’s camp has now responded, reaching out to Bisping in efforts of making this fight happen…

One of the most decorated MMA fighters of all time, former Pride FC two weight champion and UFC veteran Dan Henderson notched another massive win at UFC 199. Facing the much younger Hector Lombard on the June 4 pay-per-view in California, the 45-year old mixed martial arts legend scored a come-from-behind knockout that could’ve essentially wrapped up his amazing career. As it turned out though, ‘Hendo’s’ nemesis Michael Bisping fought at UFC 199 too, and ended up walking home with the belt that night.

‘The Count’ took on Luke Rockhold on just two weeks notice and starched his man in the first round. A flurry of clean shots landed to the jaw of ‘Rocky,’ sending the former champ to the ground with his eyeballs rolling as his English foe celebrated the win. The start of Bisping’s reign as UFC champion after 10 years in the UFC could ironically extend Henderson’s fighting career by one more fight.

As we heard earlier today, Michael Bisping trashed Dan Henderson and said he wants a rematch with the ‘old man.’ The two first met at UFC 100 where Henderson destroyed ‘The Count’s’ jaw before putting a stamping end to their rivalry with a now iconic flying forearm to the jaw. The stars never really aligned for a rematch between the two until now seven years later, where Bisping is the champion and ‘Hendo’ is counting down the days to the golf course time he deserves.

So what does Dan Henderson think of a rematch with Michael Bisping? It’s hard to think that the ageing legend could have much more than one fight left in him at this stage, but of course the feud with Bisping before UFC 100 and the subsequent highlight reel finish gives weight to the possibility of this fight happening.

It goes without saying that Dan Henderson has had one of the most storied careers in mixed martial arts (MMA) history.

He added yet another chapter to his astonishing track record with a stunning knockout of Hector Lombard 10 days ago (June 4, 2016) at UFC 199. In his post-fight interview, “Hendo” mentioned that he may have just been in his last battle.

If we have indeed seen the last of Henderson, he will leave behind an unassailable legacy. Over the course of a career that began back in 1997, he fought probably the most difficult slate of opponents in the history of the sport. Across three weight classes, from middleweight to heavyweight, Henderson consistently fought the best of the best. He squared off with the likes of both Nogueiras, Vitor Belfort, Wanderlei Silva, Quinton Jackson, Anderson Silva, Rich Franklin, Michael Bisping, Fedor Emelianenko, Daniel Cormier, Lyoto Machida, and Mauricio Rua.

This list will look back at the accomplishments of a true all-time great and consensus first ballot hall of famer.
