After it was learned that Diego Sanchez had suffered a broken hand and could no longer compete at UFC 135, Josh Koscheck has apparently stepped up to replace him and challenge Matt Hughes

Koscheck will only have about three weeks to prepare for the former UFC Welterweight champion, as he was last seen in the Octagon at UFC 124 against Georges St-Pierre. But Koscheck said he is prepared to fight once again.

“My job is to fight. It’s what I like to do,” Koscheck told USAToday.com.

“Matt Hughes is a nine-time UFC welterweight champion or something like that. He’s a good, quality opponent. I’ve told the UFC that from here on out, I only want big names and big fights.”

Koscheck has proven his status as one of the best welterweights in the world, facing such fighters as Paulo Thiago, Thaigo Alves and Georges St-Pierre, so there is reason to believe why he accepted the fight on short notice.

As for Hughes, who was on a comfortable run for a short period before losing to BJ Penn at UFC 123, he proved he still has the ability and passion to remain relevant and a competitive force in the 170 lb division. Hughes’ recent performances have Koscheck feeling confident that he’ll accept the bout, despite being on three weeks notice.

“He wants big-name fighters. He’s getting near the end of his career,” he said.

“I think he’ll take the fight because it’s good for the sport and good for the UFC.”

Whether his decision is good for the sport, or more for the sake of the event, UFC 135 will still hold some stability with a co-main event confirmed. And if anything, Koscheck said Hughes should accept the bout for himself.

“I told UFC I’d do it, and if Matt Hughes is man enough, he’ll step up and do it,” he said.

Josh Koscheck Offers to Replace Diego Sanchez and Face Matt Hughes at UFC 135

Only a little over an hour since UFC President Dana White tweeted that Diego Sanchez had to withdraw from his UFC 135 co-headlining bout with Matt Hughes, a credible replacement has already stepped up to the plate.

Koscheck tweeted: “:) got a fight in 21 days b*tches……..,” which is interesting since the American Kickboxing Academy standout recently stated that he would be fighting at UFC 139 in San Jose, California.

Rumors swirled that Koscheck would be taking on Stephan Bonnar in a middleweight bout, but that was quickly squashed when it was announced that “The American Psycho” would be taking on Kyle Kingsbury at UFC 139.

Kos then followed up with a tweet that read: “Oh ya 19 days then or something like that!!!! Either way it looks like I am in to fight matt Hughe [sic] if he takes it????”

A former Division I National Champion in collegiate wrestling, Koscheck is one of the few opponents at 170 pounds that would have the wrestling edge on Matt Hughes, a decorated high school and college wrestler in his own right.

Koscheck was on a three-fight win streak before losing a title rematch with Georges St-Pierre at UFC 124 last December.

GSP broke Koscheck’s orbital bone in the fight, which is why Kos has been on the shelf for so long.

Meanwhile, Hughes was also on a three-fight win streak before he was knocked out by BJ Penn in the trilogy of their fight series at UFC 123.

Hughes is 3-3 in his past six fights and appears to be in the twilight of his career.

However, a winner over a consensus top 10 fighter like Koscheck would certainly put Hughes’ name back into the title picture.

UFC 135: 5 Possible Fights for Matt Hughes

With the recent news that Diego Sanchez, the Season 1 winner of The Ultimate Fighter, has bowed out of his matchup with former welterweight champion Matt Hughes, speculation has already run rampant as far as who the suitable replacement will be.

“The Dream” was on a two-fight win streak over former contenders in Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann. In those two bouts, Sanchez netted the evenings “Fight of the Night” honors, which instantly propelled him back to the upper echelon of the 170-pound class.

Now that Sanchez has suffered a broken hand in preparation for the bout, Hughes is now left wanting. With no dance partner in the co-main event for UFC 135 later this month, who will step up to meet the legend?

Rashad Evans Awaits Title Shot, Doesn’t Intend to Wait Any Longer

There have been a series of unfortunate mishaps en route to a title shot for Rashad Evans, but after his dominant victory over Tito Ortiz at UFC 133, you would be hard-pressed to find anyone else more well-deserving than him.

While Evans finds himself in title contention, he doesn’t want to waste another opportunity to reclaim it. It’s a decision that has left him out of the picture before and cost him a year of activity.

“Rashad’s committed to fighting. If the title shot was a year away, I’m sure Rashad would take another fight. He’s not going to put his career on hold a year, but we don’t anticipate that being the case,” Evans manager, Glenn Robinson, told MMAWeeklyRadio.

“I hope that’s not the case. Rashad would like to fight for the title next.”

Evans’ determination and hard work as a fighter paid off when he returned from a 14 month layoff to defeat Ortiz. It was a testament to his claim as one the best 205lb fighters and a defining moment in his career.

Now that he has firmly positioned himself for a title shot, Evans will be cage-side to witness the upcoming UFC light heavyweight title bout between Jon Jones and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 135

But should the fight be delayed at some point due to injury, Evans will not hesitate to fight and remain active in the light heavyweight division. Layoffs are something Evans has familiarized himself with and due to past experiences, he won’t want to pass up another opportunity.

“If some reason the fight is delayed to a point where he has to take another opponent, he’ll take another opponent,” Robinson said.

“The title shot is his first choice, it is his first desire, but more so than anything he wants to fight.”

UFC 135: Diego Sanchez Out, Replacement Underway for Matt Hughes

UFC President Dana White is particularly reliant these days on the Internet sensation that’s sweeping the nation, the beloved Twitter.

He’s broken undisclosed bouts, events and even the occasional, and otherwise unfortunate, news that would displease most fans.

This happens to be one of those occasions.

The Ultimate Fighter season one winner Diego Sanchez, who has been riding high on the strength of two back-to-back “Fight of the Night” victories over the likes of Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann, finally got the step-up in competition that he’s due.

The Greg Jackson product was originally scheduled to face UFC Hall of Famer and two-time welterweight champion Matt Hughes, however that’s not going to be the case. The UFC head honcho recently took to twitter to reveal the bad news

@danawhite: Diego Sanchez broke his hand. Looking for a replacement for Hughes

Both Matt and Sanchez were penciled in as the co-main event for UFC 135, a pay-per-view event taking place in Denver, Colorado, headlined by a highly anticipated championship bout pitting the always colorful Quinton “Rampage” Jackson against titleholder Jon Jones.

The event takes place on September 24, so the promotion will have to do some quick work in finding a suitable replacement for the MMA icon.

UPDATE: Former title challenger Josh Koscheck recently took to twitter himself, indicating that he could very well be the next man in line to take on Hughes, though no formal announcement has been made as of yet.

@JoshKoscheck 🙂 got a fight in 21 days (expletive)……..

Oh ya 19 days then or something like that!!!! Either way it looks like I am in to fight matt Hugh if he takes it???? [sic]
