In what will become the UFC’s first ever non-title five round bout, Mark Munoz will face his toughest challenge yet, against the highly durable, always dangerous Chris Leben.

However, for Munoz, the fight is not only a landmark in UFC history, but also an opportunity to put himself in an undeniable position as a true contender in the middleweight division.  More importantly, with a win, he’ll be one fight away from a title shot.

Having won six out of his last seven fights since his drop to middleweight, “The Filipino Wrecking Machine’s” sole loss was to the last man to challenge Anderson Silva for the belt, Yushin Okami.

Since his loss to Okami at UFC Live: Jones vs. Matyushenko, Munoz has gone 3-0, beating the likes of Aaron Simpson, C.B. Dollaway and most recently, former number one middleweight contender, Demian Maia.

Come UFC 138, Munoz’s skills will be put to the test against one of the sport’s toughest and most tenacious fighters in “The Crippler”.

To make things more difficult, the fight will go into the championship rounds, possibly making it one of the most grueling fights he could possibly have, and it won’t even be for the belt.

If anybody can survive this sort of gauntlet it would definitely be Munoz, and should he come out with his hand raised it’ll be a lot harder to deny him a title shot.

Here are four reasons why a win should put Mark Munoz in line for a title shot.

Taking a Page Out of Tito Ortiz’s Playbook, Matt Brown Steps Up to Face John Hathaway at UFC 138

If nothing else, Matt Brown may have bought himself some more time in the UFC today.

The struggling welterweight who recently rebounded from three straight losses with a hard-fought win over John Howard at UFC Live: Kongo vs. Barry in June has stepped up to replace injured Pascal Krauss against British prospect John Hathaway (12-1) at UFC 138 in November. In spite of the fact that a loss will drop Brown (12-10) to 1-4 in his past five outings, it’s likely that UFC president Dana White may spare him from the chopping block should that happen much like he did Tito Ortiz who lost to Rashad Evans earlier this month at UFC 133 after he replaced an injured Phil Davis.

News of the bout was first reported by MMAJunkie.

Typically, the UFC has made it a policy to cut fighters after compiling three losses in a row, although there have been exceptions to the rule depending on the situation *cough* Joe Stevenson *cough* Dan Hardy *cough*, but besides being a decent fighter, Brown hasn’t really done anything exceptional to warrant the job protection he’s been afforded. Am I right, Gerald Harris?

“The Immortal” will have to pull out all the stops to beat Hathaway, who got his first and only taste of defeat at the hands of veteran Mike Pyle by decision last October at UFC 120 after upsetting Diego Sanchez at UFC 114 that May.

Welterweight Matt Brown has agreed to face John Hathaway at UFC 138 after the Brit’s original opponent, Pascal Krauss, recently pulled out of the fight due to a shoulder injury, MMA Fighting confirmed with sources close to the event.

UFC 138, headlined by Chris Leben vs. Mark Munoz, takes place Nov. 5 at the LG Arena in Birmingham, England.

UFC No. 1 heavyweight contender Junior dos Santos announced via Twitter that he is leaving manager Ed Soares.

Dos Santos tweeted: “I am officially under new representation! All sponsorship or press requests, please contact @GuedesGroup she’ll get you to me. Thanks guys”

Soares is one of the most influential managers in the game, managing UFC champions Anderson Silva, Jose Aldo and former champions Lyoto Machida and Antonio Rodrigo Nogeuira.

The news comes just weeks after dos Santos defeated Shane Carwin at UFC 131 to earn a shot at UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Soares is one of the best managers in the game today. But he has also come under much criticism.

Will Ribeiro, a former MMA fighter who was managed by Soares before being involved in a near fatal motorcycle accident, criticized Soares, stating: “Ed Soares and Jorge Guimaraes have to learn to be human once and for all. Before the athlete is the Human Being.”

Only time will tell how the change in management will affect dos Santos in the Octagon.
