Mike Russow may be one of the best unknown heavyweights in the UFC.

Russow has gone 4-0 inside the Octagon and has only one blemish on his overall MMA record. His UFC record also includes two knockouts—one of which was one of the best comebacks in recent years against Todd Duffee at UFC 114.

For fans who do know of Russow, it’s not his hand speed or explosive wrestling that they remark about. It’s about what he does outside the cage that gains Russow the most notice.

The UFC Insider crew followed Russow not for a day of training, but rather a day in the life of the heavyweight fighter.

One of the few fighters who also has a day job, Russow works as a police officer in his native town of Chicago.

Russow expressed that from an early age, wearing a badge was something he knew he wanted to do.

“I knew I wanted to be a cop since seventh or eighth grade. Wearing that uniform meant you were representing the best in the city,” Russow said.

The crew only captured a few moments of Russow at his job, but it’s clear he takes his role as an officer very serious.

It’s also clear that Russow isn’t simply collecting another paycheck by working in a low crime neighborhood. In the video, Russow explained that he works on a district in the south side of Chicago.

For those unfamiliar with Chicago, the south side is the equivalent to a concrete jungle in certain areas. The stories of gang violence and drug issues that outsiders will hear about the city almost always emanate from this area of the city.

An interesting section of the video catches Russow during roll call, a daily procedure for any police officer. In the background, Russow shares who he considers to be a hero.

His answer wasn’t representative of the norm for a MMA fighter.

“I don’t have too many heroes or athletes, but when you have guys who are 20-year veterans, guys with salty and stained blue shirts…those are the guys I look up to,” Russow said.

Perhaps the best example of Russow’s blue-collar work ethic was shown when he goes to work on his cardio.

Where most athletes have professional trainers working meticulously to analyze every movement and breath. For Russow, it is just his coach and him at Saint Xavier College.

The heavyweight contender is shown working a few laps not in some high-tech sports facility but on a simple track above some basketball courts. It’s the perfect visual example of Russow’s determination and work ethic—something the people in the video mention multiple times about the heavyweight fighter.

Russow is schedule to fight Fabricio Werdum at UFC 147, which will take place in Brazil.

Russow will be fighting one of the best heavyweights in the world in Werdum’s back yard—something he said he believes will work in his favour.

“All the pressure is on Werdum for fighting in Brazil,” Russow said. “Probably most people think I’m going to go in there and lose, but I know what I can do and I’m prepared.”

From the south side of Chicago to Japan, and now to Brazil, it has been quite the journey for Russow.

Already a big name in the Chicagoland area, UFC 147 will be Russow’s big chance to receive some national recognition if he can defeat Werdum.

Going into hostile territory to face an elite-level fighter on his home turf?

Sounds like just another day at the office for Officer Russow.

UFC 147: Wanderlei Silva Trains With Lyoto Machida to Prepare for Rich Franklin

Wanderlei Silva will train alongside Lyoto Machida while preparing for Rich Franklin ahead of UFC 147.

“The Axe Murderer” has released a video blog documenting his training sessions prior to next weekend. Silva and Franklin are scheduled to square off in the main event.

Silva’s sparring session with Machida is intriguing to watch, as he picks up some pointers from “The Dragon” and grapples with him as well.

Machida scored a TKO victory over Franklin in December 2003 before the former UFC middleweight champion made his way to the UFC.

Silva has made a wise move, calling on Machida to assist him. It should help him leading up to the match.

Also, training with a world-class athlete like Machida would be a plus in itself.

Silva and Franklin last fought at UFC 99 in Germany where the Cincinnati native walked away with a close decision victory. However, since the Brazilian has been training with guys like Machida and Fabricio Werdum, the rematch might see a different result.

If he is to pick up his second consecutive win, don’t be surprised to see Silva paying a visit to Team Black House more often in the near future.

The camp boasts some of the sport’s best talent. Silva would benefit from training at different facilities to help perfect his game.

Silva may not be in title contention, but earning a win over Franklin will certainly be rewarding.

In the wild, there are young and hungry lions who are waiting for the opportunity to establish their dominance. When a member of the pack can’t keep up with the rest, he will inevitably be replaced by someone stronger and faster than himself.

While the eight-sided cages of the UFC are a far stretch from the plains of the Serengeti, the same struggle for contention happens under the Zuffa umbrella on a regular basis. Competitive fighters hit a rough patch and quickly find themselves ejected from their surroundings. New stars from the regional circuit are brought in to replace them, and the cycle begins anew.

Enough of the lame safari metaphors. Here is a look at 10 fighters who could find themselves in the unemployment line if their next fight doesn’t go the way that they’d like.

For all those keeping track online at UFC.com, The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil is almost finished, and we have two featherweights ready to fight at the finale. Of course, the finale is UFC 147, headlined by coach Wanderlei Silva and late replacement Rich Franklin.

Franklin steps in for Silva’s opposing coach Vitor Belfort, who unfortunately injured his hand recently. Nevertheless, fans will be in for a good fight in the main event.

As for the featherweight tournament final, let’s breakdown the fight, which will be fought between Team Belfort’s Godofredo “Pepey” (8-0) and Rony “Jason” (10-3).

UFC 147: A Card Not Worthy of Being on Pay-Per-View

When UFC 99 was aired on PPV three years ago, it wound up being the second-least purchased UFC PPV of the year. That fight card featured a still somewhat-in-their-prime Wanderlei Silva and Rich Franklin in the main event, rising stars Cheick Kongo and future heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in the co- main event, as well as Dan Hardy and Mirko Cro Cop on the broadcast. All of that drew 360,000 PPV buys.

On June 23rd, the PPV card of UFC 147 will feature the rematch of a now somewhat-past-their-prime Franklin and Silva, and a respectable at best co-main event between heavyweight contenders Fabricio Werdum and Mike Russow. That is where the PPV worthy matches end.

The next fight on the main card is a featherweight bout between Brazilians Yuri Alcantara and Hacran Dias. Alcantara is 2-0 in the UFC, with decision victories over Michihiro Omigawa and Felipe Arantes the last two times the octagon made its way to Brazil at UFC 142 and UFC 134. Dias is making his UFC debut after a 20-1-1 start to his MMA career, his last five wins coming in the Shooto organization.

The next two fights are the finals of “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil” in the featherweight and middleweight divisions. The featherweight final will pit two (shocker) Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts against one another as Godofredo Pepey will take on Rony “Jason” Mariano. Pepey comes into the fight 8-0, Mariano at 10-3.

The middleweight finals will pit 7-2 Daniel Sarafian against the winner of the semi-final fight between Thiago Bodao and Cezar Mutante. This is the first time in the 16 seasons of “The Ultimate Fighter” that the final will air on PPV.

This Brazilian fighter-heavy card is reminiscent of past events UFC 75, UFC 95, and UFC 105, all of which took place in England where the fight cards were filled up with English fighters to appeal to the majority of those in attendance. All three of those cards aired for free on Spike TV, and all of them had better main cards top-to-bottom than UFC 147.

The main card of UFC 147 has an appealing main event and co-main Event, at best. If the UFC thinks they will rake in big PPV numbers on June 23rd, they should think again.
