UFC 148 will feature a bout between Michael “The Count” Bisping (22-4) and Tim “The Barbarian” Boetsch (15-4) when it takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas this coming July 7.

Here’s a short primer on the two fighters courtesy of Tristen Critchfield in his article for Sherdog.com:

Boetsch left the light heavyweight division following a submission loss to Phil Davis at UFC 123. He defeated Kendall Grove via unanimous nod in his middleweight debut at UFC 130 and followed that performance with a three-round triumph against Nick Ring last September. The AMC Pankration representative achieved the signature victory of his career in earning a technical knockout over Okami at UFC 144, overwhelming the Japanese fighter with a third-round flurry to force a stoppage.

Bisping saw a four-fight winning streak come to an end when he was outpointed by Chael Sonnen at UFC on Fox 2, with the loss costing him a shot at middleweight king Anderson Silva. “The Count” parted ways with his longtime gym Wolfslair Academy shortly thereafter. The Englishman’s 12 victories inside the Octagon puts him 11th on the UFC’s all-time wins list.

The two fighters’ respective last fights showed contrasting results.

Boetsch was beaten up by Okami in the first two rounds until he lived up to his nickname and went barbaric and finished the Japanese fighter for a dramatic come-from-behind victory.

Bisping, on the other hand, was in a close fight until he got taken down in the pivotal third and last round, spending most of it on his back fending top man Sonnen’s attacks inside his guard, eventually losing by decision.

The Count, despite the loss, impressed fans and gained more support—even earning the begrudged respect of his critics—for keeping it a close, competitive fight against Sonnen.

What was also significantly remarkable was Bisping’s dramatic improvement in the wrestling department, both in defense and offense.

He even took down Sonnen inside the last minute of the third and final round. (It should be noted, though, that he already showed improved wrestling versus Jorge Rivera, but giving Sonnen a hard time should give Bisping’s sharpening skill a much higher appraisal.)

Bisping’s superiority in the striking aspect and his still underrated (?) wrestling skill will teach Boetsch a thing or two about elite MMA fighting—as long as The Count doesn’t get overconfident and count the always dangerous Barbarian out.

Video of the Day: Cung Le and JCVD Star in ‘Dragon Eyes’ [TRAILER]

(Van Damme was convinced that the man before him was in fact Cung Le, no matter how much he pleaded that he was “just the delivery guy.”)

Somewhere in between having his nose turned into delicious mashed potatoes by Wanderlei Silva at UFC 139 and accepting a match with Rich Franklin at UFC 148, it looks like Cung Le managed to squeeze in another movie to add to his list of credentials that includes such films as Fighting, Pandorum, and Tekken. Being the only one of the above titles I have seen, I can honestly say that Pandorum wasn’t half bad, and neither was Le in it. That’s more than anyone say for Rampage Jackson’s film career thus far.

In any case, Le’s newest entry is called Dragon Eyes, and despite it’s ridiculously cliche title, it looks like it could actually be a pretty damn entertaining flick. Co-starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Peter Weller, and JCVD film veteran Kristopher Van Varenberg, Dragon Eyes hits stores on April 9th.

Join us after the jump for the action-packed trailer.

I counted 3 Superman punches, 47 different kicks (including some Sweet Chin Music at 1:10), 18 war cries, and possibly the sweetest belly to back suplex that has ever been captured on film (:58). And with Le’s Shan Shou prowess and Van Damme’s well documented affinity for spin kicks, how can this movie not be a literal tornado of awesomeness? I’m surprised they didn’t bring the sets down with their combined centrifugal forces alone.

Report: Tito Ortiz’s Retirement Fight Will Be Against Forrest Griffin at UFC 148

(“How ’bout this, bro: If neither one of us are married in ten years, *we* get married.”)

According to a tweet sent out last night by Tito Ortiz, the Huntington Beach Bad Boy will return to the Octagon at UFC 148 (July 7th, Las Vegas), where he’ll face Forrest Griffin for the third time. Ortiz and Griffin’s first two fights both ended in split-decisions, with Ortiz winning their first meeting at UFC 59 in 2006, and Griffin taking the rematch at UFC 106 in 2009.

Ortiz has suffered through a 1-5 record over the last four years, with his only win coming via freakish first-round guillotine choke of Ryan Bader last July. Since then, he’s been TKO’d in back-to-back outings against Rashad Evans and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Griffin’s last fight was a rematch with Mauricio Rua at UFC 134 in Rio, in which FoGriff got KO’d in under two minutes. By some accounts, his head just wasn’t in it.

Though multiple sources are referring to this fight as Ortiz’s swan song, we just don’t see Tito quietly walking away from the sport if he manages to pull off an impressive victory here. So what do you think: Who’s getting their hand raised, and does the Ortiz/Griffin trilogy fight interest you to begin with?

Tim Boetsch Has Slugged/Talked His Way Into a Meeting With Michael Bisping at UFC 148

(Jeez…relax, Tim. It’s not like you rolled a ball into some pins or anything.)

Following his monumental comeback win over Yushin Okami at UFC 144 — you know, the one that made Joe Rogan soak his seat?Tim Boetsch respectfully called out Michael Bisping, telling MMA Junkie Radio: “I had wanted to fight [Bisping] even when we were both back at light heavyweight. I’ve had an eye on him…For some reason, I think Bisping rubs a lot of people the wrong way. That’s not the reason I want to fight him, though. I want to fight him because he’s ranked higher than me. I think I can take that from him…I like being the underdog. I like going into somebody else’s house and knowing everybody wants the other guy to win…That fires me up and gets me excited.”

At the time, we let this little tidbit pass us by without mention because come on, Bisping vs. Boetsch? It’s exactly the kind of fight that the Count would turn up his well-bred nose at. But according to the UFC, it’s actually happening. The fight is slated to be on the main card of UFC 148 (July 7th, Las Vegas), which already features Rich Franklin vs. Cung Le, and a cruel bantamweight mismatch between Renan Barao and Jeff Hougland.

For Tim Boetsch (now 3-0 as a UFC middleweight), the July matchup is a chance to launch himself in the upper ranks of MMA competition for the first time in his five-year career. For Michael Bisping, it’s yet another opportunity to insult a surging veteran for not being on his level before inevitably kicking the snot out of him. (See also: Jason Miller, Jorge Rivera.) Bisping’s last performance, a unanimous decision loss to Chael Sonnen at UFC on FOX 2, snapped a four-fight win streak for the Count. He’s never lost two consecutive fights in his entire career. Let the colorfully-accented trash-talk begin…

Coming off of the biggest win of his career versus Yushin Okami, Tim “The Barbarian” Boetsch is now scheduled to take on Michael “The Count” Bisping at UFC 148 in Las Vegas.

UFC officials confirmed the fight through MMAweekly.com earlier today. It came after another middleweight matchup between Cung Le and Rich Franklin was also announced for the same card.

Boetsch was last seen overcoming his biggest challenge in Okami at UFC 144 in Japan. Many saw Boetsch as a massive underdog, and the fight appeared to solidify that position for the better part of two rounds as he was dominated by the superior grappler in Okami.

Boetsch entered the third with a stoppage on his mind and knocked out the former title challenger with a series of brutal uppercuts.

After the fight, Boetsch was interviewed by Full Contact Fighter on who he would like to fight next, and he hinted at a possible fight versus Bisping, someone who he had been wanting to fight for a while.

Both Boetsch and Bisping have competed at the light-heavyweight division before dropping to middleweight, so this is a fight that very well could have taken place at any time in both fighters’ UFC careers.

Bisping comes into the fight with a 22-4 record. He was last seen losing to Chael Sonnen at UFC on Fox 2, but many fans thought he could have been awarded the decision. All three judges leaned towards Sonnen to set up the rematch between him and reigning champion Anderson Silva this summer.

Boetsch is 15-4 and currently riding a three-fight win streak since moving to the 185-pound division.

His wins include those over Okami, Nick Ring and Kendall Grove.

A title shot may not be on the line for this fight, but it is definitely one that will give the winner a possible chance to be in a No. 1 contender’s match.
