‘UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Silva’ Picks Up Cerrone vs. Noons, Teixeira vs. Bader

Two more big matchups have been added to the already-beefy UFC 160 lineup, which is slated for May 25th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In addition to the previously reported Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio Silva heavyweight championship headliner and Junior Dos Santos vs. Alistair Overeem, the card will feature…

Donald Cerrone vs. KJ Noons (lightweight): The always entertaining “Cowboy” Cerrone, who followed up his ass-whuppin’ at the hands of Anthony Pettis last month by nearly falling to his death in a recent rock-climbing incident*, will welcome former Strikeforce boxing-specialist KJ Noons to the Octagon. Noons has hit a rough stretch lately, losing four of his last five fights, all by decision. His last match ended in a split-decision loss against Ryan Couture.

Glover Teixeira vs. Ryan Bader (light-heavyweight): Coming off his decision win over Rampage Jackson at UFC on FOX 6 — his third-straight win in the UFC and 18th-straight overall — the much-hyped Teixeira will get another solid test in the form of Ryan Bader, who choked out Vladimir Matyushenko in just 50 seconds at the same event.

We expect Cerrone and Teixeira to be solid favorites in these fights. Anybody predicting an upset?

* Don’t blame me, I wanted to go bowling.

UFC 160 was just announced last week, but is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about cards in the promotion’s history.

Headlined by a heavyweight title fight between champion Cain Velasquez and former opponent Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva at the May 25 event, the card will also feature an exciting affair between lightweight fighters who love to scrap.

During Tuesday’s episode of UFC Tonight, it was announced that former WEC title contender Donald Cerrone is going to welcome former Strikeforce stud K.J. Noons into the Octagon.

Cerrone most recently competed at UFC on Fox 6 in a fight where he was quickly finished by Anthony Pettis in a possible title eliminator. Prior to the loss, “Cowboy” had won six of his seven UFC bouts, which includes victories over Jeremy Stephens and Dennis Siver.

Meanwhile, Noons is fresh off the heels of a controversial decision loss to Ryan Couture on the final Strikeforce card. However, before the loss, the Hawaiian lost decisively in matchups against Josh Thomson, Jorge Masvidal and Nick Diaz.

Also on this card is a hotly anticipated fight between former titleholders Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem. In addition, a light heavyweight contest between standouts Glover Teixeira and Ryan Bader has been reportedly added to the bill.

Bader won’t be the only Ultimate Fighter winner in action on this card, as Amir Sadollah meets Stephen Thompson in what promises to be a standup clinic.

Report: Glover Teixeira vs. Ryan Bader Booked for UFC 160

Ever since his promotional debut, UFC fans can not get enough of UFC prospect Glover Teixeira. The Brazilian fighter now holds a 3-0 mark inside the Octagon. After beating down former champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC on Fox 6, fans have wondered who is next in line for this title contender.

Wonder no more:

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto tweeted on Tuesday night that light heavyweights Teixeira and Ryan Bader are scheduled to do battle at UFC 160. The report did not specify if this matchup will take place on the evening’s main card.

Bader earned himself a decision win against Rampage, but followed it up with a KO loss to Lyoto Machida last summer. Most recently, the Ultimate Fighter winner was seen setting the record for fastest light heavyweight submission in UFC history against Vladimir Matyushenko.

Currently, the UFC has Teixeira ranked as the No. 4 light heavyweight on the roster, with Bader coming in behind him at No. 9.

With the winner of Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida expected to get a championship opportunity, this is one of the most impactful fights that could have been booked at 205 pounds.

UFC 160 takes place on May 25 and will be headlined by a UFC heavyweight championship battle between Cain Velasquez and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. Also on the card is a featured battle between former title holders Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem.

Frankie Edgar to Remain at Featherweight, Two Possible Opponents Named

Frankie Edgar is staying at 145 pounds, and two possible opponents have already been named for his next fight.

The former UFC lightweight champion lost his third consecutive fight at UFC 156 to featherweight champ Jose Aldo in a razor-thin decision.

After the loss, MMA fans were left wondering whether or not Edgar would return to his old stomping grounds at 155 pounds, or stick around and work towards a rematch with Aldo.

During his weekly appearance on UFC Tonight, MMA journalist Ariel Helwani was once again on-hand with a bag full of goodies regarding Edgar and the ever-growing featherweight division:

“Frankie Edgar, he’s licking his wounds, he’s hoping to get back in the mix after his loss to Jose Aldo. Well, his manager, Ali Abdel-Aziz told me he wants to fight either Cub Swanson, who had a big win this weekend in London, or Dennis Siver.

He wants to fight Cub in a five-round FUEL or FX TV fight, or if that can’t happen, he’ll fight either one of them at UFC 160, Memorial Day weekend, which is shaping up to be a big card now.”

Swanson makes the most sense as the next opponent for Edgar, who is looking to catapult himself back into the title picture.

He is currently riding a four-fight win streak and coming off an impressive decision victory over top-10 featherweight contender Dustin Poirier.

Edgar, however, has lost three straight title fights. Is it fair for a surging new contender like Swanson to be forced to risk his recent run against Edgar, who continues to cash in on great opportunities handed down by the UFC?

After the loss to Aldo, UFC President Dana White stated at the post-fight press conference that Edgar would have to get in line and work his way back into the title picture. If it truly is back to the drawing board for Edgar, a bout against Siver is the perfect place to start.

Siver is 2-0 as a featherweight, and his exciting fighting style should make for an entertaining scrap with the former lightweight champ.

UFC 160 is slated for May 25 and it features both the heavyweight title bout between Cain Velasquez and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and the heavyweight grudge match between Junior Dos Santos and Alistair Overeem.

Regardless of his opponent, Edgar’s presence could turn this already stacked event into one of the best fight cards of the year.

Bigfoot Silva Happy to Shock the World Again by Beating Cain Velasquez

Just days after his thrilling knockout victory over Alistair Overeem at UFC 156, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva got the call that he’s waited for but didn’t necessarily expect so soon.

The former Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix participant was offered a shot at Cain Velasquez and the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 160 in May.  He was more than happy to accept the offer, but wasn’t sure even after his last win that it would come that quickly.

It all changed when he received word from the UFC that he would be the man to challenge Cain Velasquez in his first title defense since capturing the belt from Junior Dos Santos at UFC 155 late last year.

It was certainly a dream come true to be offered the shot, but just fighting for the belt isn’t enough for Silva.

To truly realize his dream, he needs to win it.

“I was very happy, and that is being a part of the realization of my dream, and May 25th I will complete my dream and be champion,” Silva told Bleacher Report in an exclusive interview just after receiving the news about the title shot.

The fight with Velasquez goes beyond just the UFC heavyweight title—it also falls into the category of redemption. In May 2012 in his UFC debut, Silva fell victim to Velasquez losing by TKO in the first round after suffering a nasty cut that left him bleeding and unable to stop the barrage of punches coming from the former Arizona State wrestler.

When looking back on the fight, Silva doesn’t regret the loss as much as he ponders why he wasn’t able to stick to the strategy determined by his coaches to get him ready for the bout.  As a matter of fact, Bigfoot plans on keeping his training almost identical as the last time he prepared for Velasquez.

The biggest difference is applying what he does in the gym to what he unleashes on fight night.

“I learned that I have to do what I trained with my coaches and follow the strategy,” Silva answered when asked what he will do differently the second time around.  “I will follow my strategy 100-percent and my training will be basically what I did in my first fight against Cain.”

Since his loss to Velasquez last year, Silva has managed to knock out previously undefeated heavyweight prospect Travis Browne as well as his thunderous finish of Alistair Overeem at UFC 156.

The two emphatic victories catapulted Silva back into the title picture, and with his win against Overeem, he became the last man standing in the heavyweight contender’s race.

Since the fight was announced, there have been some naysayers that didn’t necessarily care for Silva’s name being selected for a title shot.  It had less to do with him being the No. 1 contender and more the fact that he had just lost to Velasquez two fights ago.

Silva is used to being the underdog and counted out, so this is nothing new.  When he fought former Pride champion Fedor Emelianenko, most believed it was the Russian’s time to triumph.  That was until Silva blasted Emelianenko and dominated him en route to a TKO stoppage after two rounds.

The same odds were against Silva when he faced Overeem at UFC 156.

Overeem had all but been anointed as the next heavyweight title contender until Silva smashed his jaw with a series of right hands that left him crumpled against the cage and down on the mat.   The Brazilian just knows how to overcome the odds.

That’s one reason Silva welcomes the label of underdog, and he invites everyone to count him out.  It’s nothing he hasn’t heard before, and he’s happy to come out on top once again.

“I’m already used to it,” Silva said about not being favored to defeat Velasquez.  “It gives me more energy and will to win.”

Silva will test his resolve in May when he gets his rematch with Velasquez, and a shot at becoming the new UFC heavyweight champion at UFC 160.
