In advance of their welterweight title fight rematch at UFC 181 (December 6th, Las Vegas), the UFC has released the full video of Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler 1 — the Fight of the Year candidate that took place at UFC 171 in March. Hendricks won the bout by unanimous decision (48-47 across the board) following a wild brawl that we stopped trying to score after the second round. In particular, the third round, which starts at the video’s 15:18 mark, is an incredible testament to both fighters’ ability to give and receive damage. It’s a true classic, and not a bad way to spend a half hour if you’re bored at the office today.

Fight fans can rejoice because Nick Diaz has decided to return from his brief retirement. UFC President Dana White used his official Twitter account to reveal the return of the popular fighter. Diaz has signed a new deal that will allow him to appear in the Octagon at least three more times. The UFC has struggled to create stars with its current roster, so Diaz’s return comes at a great time for the promotion.
As always, Nick is interested in fighting for a UFC title; however, it will be hard to book him in such a manner coming off of two straight losses.
“I’d like to fight for the title,” Diaz said in a UFC.com report. “I think that would be a big deal and worth fighting for. I want fights that will lead to a title fight. Whoever is in line and whoever has the title, that’s who I’m going to be fighting.
With that in mind, these are five fight suggestions that would work to keep the Stockton, California, native busy while creating interesting contests for the fans to enjoy.
“Jake Shields has been released by the UFC. Jake appreciates the opportunities provided by the UFC and thanks Dana White and Lorenzo Fertita. Jake is an elite athlete who is one of the best welterweight fighters in the world with a long history of winning at a championship level. Jake and our team are already exploring options. I’m confident that Jake will have a new promotion to call home very soon. Jake thanks his fans for their support and looks forward to competing for them again soon.”
Not since Jon Fitch have we been this shocked and outraged over the firing of a fighter who we didn’t really care for in the first place. Shields was coming into the Lombard match on a two-fight win streak, with split-decision victories over Demian Maia and Tyron Woodley. And he would have been riding a four-fight win streak if not for the mysterious no-contest he caught after winning a decision against Ed Herman in a middleweight bout at UFC 150, then failing his drug test.

Still, Shields was unable to secure a single stoppage victory in eight attempts within the Octagon, and his blowout losses to Georges St-Pierre, Jake Ellenberger, and Lombard secured his “perennial contender” status. Unless there’s more to this story, it seems like the UFC simply fired Shields at its first opportunity because he was no longer of any use to the promotion. Perhaps Shields was too [expletive] expensive for the UFC to keep around; that’s the drawback of being a highly-ranked veteran without a real fanbase.
The question is, where does Shields go from here? Should he sign with the World Series of Fighting and join their deep roster of welterweight UFC castoffs? Should he go to OneFC and set up the superfight against Ben Askren that hardcore MMA fans have been begging for (just kidding)? Let us know what you think, and how you feel about Shields’s firing — is it bullcrap, or long overdue?

UFC 171 took its toll on its combatants, as every fighter on the card received a medical suspension of at least one week.
As relayed by The MMA Report, The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation recently released the full list of suspensions, and the results are brutal for a handful of fighters on the card.
Most notably, Robert Whiteford, JimyHettes and co-main event fighter Carlos Condit received indefinite suspensions, and they will be out of action until cleared by a doctor.
Conditsuffered a torn ACL and partially torn meniscus while being taken down by his opponent, TyronWoodley.
After getting back to his feet, Woodley threw a leg kick, and Condit awkwardly tweaked his injured knee while attempting to defend the strike.
Now, “The Natural Born Killer” faces a lengthy recovery, and he is suspended until further notice.
Johny Hendricks, who captured the UFC welterweight title at the event, is suspended until April 15.
Hendricks fought a tough, gritty, five-round war against Robbie Lawler, and news emerged after the fight that the newly minted champion went to battle with a torn bicep.
After undergoing successful surgery, though, Hendricks will recover and look to get back in action sooner than later.
