The MMA universe stopped in its tracks over UFC 196, but the UFC isn’t slowing down one bit. On April 23, fans get treated to another big event featuring two title fights, this one headlined by the epic rematch that sees Daniel Cormier defend his UFC light heavyweight title against Jon Jones, who remains the lineal UFC champion.

Not surprisingly, many professional fighters celebrated Conor McGregor’s submission loss to Nate Diaz (watch the full video highlights here) in the main event of last night’s (Sat., March 5, 2016) UFC 196 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. After all, ‘The Notorious’ had essentially verbally laid waste to almost every top contender ranging from 145 all the way up to 170 pounds during a meteoric rise to the lofty position of the UFC’s biggest star.
And this week, he took it to an even further level when he declared that the world’s Nos. 1 & 2-ranked pound-for-pound fighters, former light heavyweight champion Jones and dominant longtime flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, didn’t deserve a spot other than 10 on that list because he was ‘Nos. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, and 9’ himself.
Now, apparently Jones and ‘Mighty Mouse’ took offense to this, as ‘Bones’ posted the following picture on Instagram of himself and the 125-pound king cageside at the fights. It was quite the stinging jab from Jones, who has immediately reinserted himself at the top of the MMA trash-talking game heading into his highly anticipated rematch with Daniel Cormier at UFC 197.

The anticipated light heavyweight title rematch between champion Daniel Cormier and former champion Jon Jones at April 23’s UFC 197 most likely didn’t need any more hype, but it certainly got just that at yesterday’s (Fri., March 4, 2016) UFC: Unstoppable press conference in Las Vegas.
Following over a year of bad blood leading up to and after their first match-up at UFC 182 in January 2015, which Jones won by unanimous decision, beef was inevitable at the stacked media event, and Cormier got the ball rolling when he was asked if he found it disrespectful that Jones had brought his own belt to the press conference. ‘DC’ responded that he did, but the real dynamic of it was that Jones hadn’t learned anything during his year off due to repeated problems with drugs and alcohol:
“Yeah, I do. I think when you, you know, people, you know, they cheer him. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, but I think it’s a testament to his mental. It shows how disrespectful to come out here with that belt; it shows that he thinks there are no repercussions for his actions. That’s why he’s up here with that title. If he understood his issues, he would not do that, he would respect what he lost because of his actions outside. But there is no change on that young man; he’s doing the same type of shit. He’s doing the same thing, he will continue.”
As the consummate heel, Jones responded that his old feelings towards Cormier didn’t get to him anymore, as his fight with the champ was more about proving that he could rise up from the hit-and-run charges that resulted in him being on probation:
“You know, honestly, they’re not at this point, you know, right now. I’m on a mission to prove to the world that you can get back on your feet after almost anything if you don’t give up on yourself; you know, that its all about continuing to fight. I know in order to prove that, defeating Daniel Cormier is gonna be a big part of that. So, I have no reason to not like him right now, I took his undefeated record, I’m gonna take his belt – I’m gonna take my belt back – and I got no problem with him.”
‘Bones’ painted the picture that he has no animosity towards ‘DC’ whatsoever, but Cormier told an entirely different story in response, noting that Jones actually told him some rather choice words backstage before the show.
That’s when the smack talk picked up in a big way.

Building off the highly palpable buzz of tomorrow night’s (Saturday, March 5, 2016) UFC 196, the world’s biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion will unveil the spring’s biggest fights and events in today’s ‘Unstoppable’ press conference from Las Vegas.
Scheduled to appear are former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and his arch rival, current champion Daniel Cormier, who will once again meet for the belt in the main event of April 23’s UFC 197. After a series of seething social media barbs this week, Jones has stated that the tension will be ‘ramped up’ at the presser after shockingly appearing in UFC content with the belt.
Also set to make an appearance are middleweight champion Luke Rockhold and former champion Chris Weidman, the world’s top two 185-pound fighters who are set to clash again in a rematch at June’s UFC 199. Rockhold battered Weidman in a fourth round TKO to seal the belt at December 2015’s UFC 194.

The mixed martial arts (MMA) world is anxiously awaiting the return of longtime former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who’s set to take on rival Daniel Cormier in the main event of April 23’s UFC 197.
‘Bones,’ the dominant champ who never lost his belt but was stripped of the title and suspended after a hit-and-run accident in April 2015 left a 25-year-old pregnant Albuquerque woman with a broken arm and the embattled fighter with 18 months probation, has since been reinstated to the UFC.
He’s retaken the top spot in the official pound-for-pound rankings, and he”s also rekindled his well-documented war of words with Cormier, the current champ who won the title in his absence after losing a decision to Jones at UFC 182.
Many, if not most, are picking Jones to regain his belt when he rematches Cormier, but if a recent tweet from ‘Bones’ is any indication, the UFC might be getting a bit ahead of themselves.
Last night, Jones posted a video of him holding the belt for UFC content and wrote that the promotion was smart because they ‘know order will be restored shortly.’ Check it out:

Now, many will view this occurrence as a bit of foreshadowing, and indeed you could find it hard to argue with that based on jones’ previous win over Cormier. But after submitting Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 and defending the belt in a war with Alexander Gustafsson in one of the best fights of last year at UFC 192, Cormier is the official champ and will be so until Jones defeats him inside the Octagon whether he and his fans like it or not.
It’s also interesting to see the promotion film Jones with the belt before he’s even won it, because even as the overwhelming favorite, a fight is still a fight and anything can happen. And as we’ve seen recently, supposedly dominant champions can be taken out in shockingly quick fashion.
Jones and Cormier have been trading barbs in the media this week, creating even more hype and attention for a grudge match that doesn’t need it.

Former long-time UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones will attempt to regain the title he had stripped from him when he meets champion Daniel “DC” Cormier in a rematch at April 23 2016’s UFC 197.
While the two men have a bitter rivalry amongst themselves to say the least, “Bones” isn’t all that interested in beating Cormier for a second time other than for the sake of getting his belt back.
The former champion actually recently stated that a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson, who pushed Jones to his limits back in 2013, actually means more to him than his upcoming showdown with “DC”.
To this day, many still believe that “The Mauler” got the better of Jones back at UFC 165, including the Swedish star himself.
Catching wind of Jones’ recent comments, Gustafsson took to his official Facebook page to respond, telling “Bones” to focus on his fight with Cormier, but also noting that he wants the belt that he feels he’s owed:
Jon, just focus on your fight with DC, I’m here, waiting for you. You want to get rid of the doubts you say? I say I just want that belt that that you owe me from our last fight!
Gustafsson is coming off of a loss to Cormier last October, but his exciting style has kept him in title talks for the last couple of years.
If Jones indeed gets by Cormier next month, it’s likely that he’ll finally meet top contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, but would you like to see the pound-for-pound king go round two with Gustafsson in the near future?
