After seven fights under the UFC banner, former DREAM and Strieforce champion Gegard Mousasi put in his best showing this past Saturday July 9. Facing Thiago ‘Marreta’ Santos t UFC 00, ‘The Dreamcatcher’ wasted no time in getting the job done. After just a few minutes it was clear that Mousasi was on a mission, as he dispatched Santos with a brutal and clean knockout in the first round to win ‘performance of the night.’

That makes it two on the bounce for Mousasi after beating Thales Leites in London this past February 27, and so the potential for a big fight is now present. With the top end of the middleweight division extremely clogged right now, the 47-fight veteran takes aim at a number of huge but also realistic potential opponents for his next outing. Included on the list is former middleweight champion Anderson Silva, whom ‘The Dreamcatcher’ sounds a little frustrated with.

Anderson and Mousasi

Speaking with MMAJunkie Radio, Mousasi pointedout a few fights he’d want to take next, and questioned Silva’s legitimacy in terms of the rankings:

“I would love to fight Uriah Hall. Even Derek Brunson. Of course, if I want to fight for the title, I need the guy who’s better known. New York, Anderson Silva,” Mousasi said. “Or Vitor Belfort.”

“Anderson Silva has lost (four) of his last (five) fights,” Mousasi said. “He’s still ranked No. 5. He’s been caught for steroids. He’s been losing fights, and he’s still in the top six. The rankings don’t matter. I just need to keep busy. I need a couple wins because there are a couple guys ahead of me.”

“I would like to fight again, maybe in New York,” he said. “That would be nice to have on my resume. I can fight in two months again. Three or four fights this year, and I can do it.”

Although unsuccessful in his UFC 200 fight with Daniel Cormier, Anderson Silva gained a lot of respect. After taking the fight on just three days notice following surgery and a period of no training, ‘The Spider’ will surely be looking to get back in the octagon soon against a top opponent, does that include Gegard Mousasi?

The monumental UFC 200 card is just over a week away as the event is slated for July 9, 2016 from the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Featuring three title fights and some of the biggest names in the sport, UFC 200 could very well could go down as the biggest card in promotional history.

One fight that has stuck out lies in the co-main event slot, as former UFC heavyweight champion and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) performer Brock Lesnar will make his highly-anticipated return to action against knockout artist. Mark Hunt. Despite being one of the biggest draws in the history of the sport, Lesnar, who main evented UFC 100, won’t headline the show, as the main attraction features a long-awaited rematch between Daniel Cormier and pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones.

Jones will attempt to recapture the light heavyweight title he lost to trouble with the law rather than an opponent, and get back to ruling the division. A few more defenses of the strap likely remain for Jones if he topples Cormier, but Lesnar’s future with the UFC is unclear after July 9th.

One interesting suggestion that came from an MMA insider on Twitter earlier today (June 29, 2016) was that Jones, who has touched upon a potential jump to heavyweight in the past, and Lesnar do battle next if both come out victorious:

While this thought may seem a bit outlandish and unrealistic, Jones’ manager, Malki Kawa, replied to the tweet saying that he ‘could see’ the potentially massive clash taking place:

Would you be interesting in seeing the pound-for-pound king dance with “The Beast”?

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen either BJ Penn or Georges St-Pierre actively fighting. For ‘Rush’ it was the tail end of a six-year win streak that sent him to retirement in 2013, having won 12 straight fights since 2007, but squeaking past Johny Hendricks at UFC 167. Citing personal issues and the somewhat loose drug testing regime in mixed martial arts at the time, the former promotional poster boy relinquished his undisputed title, much to the dismay of his fans and UFC president Dana White.

‘Th Prodigy’ left the sport on a very different kind of streak, having been 5-1-1 in his last five years of competition, only competing three times between October 2011 and July 2014, and losing all those fights in rather ugly fashion. Fighting Nick Diaz and Rory MacDonald at welterweight was brave, albeit somewhat ill fated, and taking on Frankie Edgar at featherweight in his last fight was not a great decision.

BJ Penn

That was 2014, and Penn lost by harrowing TKO in the trilogy match with Edgar, sending him out of the sport with a rather unsatisfactory summary to such a storied fighting career. Criminal accusations and a failed USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) test for IV use have hindered returns at UFC 197 and 199 for the former welterweight and lightweight champ, but now he’s aiming for a November return against an old foe in Georges St-Pierre:

This was in response to ‘GSP’ recently telling The MMA Hour that he could ‘easily’ make lightweight if required.

georges st. pierre ufc stats

During his best years Penn lost to ‘Rush’ by both decision at UFC 58 and TKO at UFC 94. The former welterweight champion and consensus greatest 170-pounder of all time ‘GSP’ has already been linked to a middleweight return against Michael Bisping, so is ‘The Prodigy’ asking for a lightweight battle a little too far down the weight categories?

Penn, in terms of fighters going down as their age goes up, is quite a rare sight. Most prefer to go up as their physique naturally swells over time, and what are the chances that St-Pierre will actually fancy the trip down below his formerly owned weight class? That said, UFC 205 will be the first event held in New York, and at the Madison Square Gardens no less. For obvious reasons this will be a historic night, potentially filled with red panties should the stars align in the correct manner.

Would this be a fight worth watching? Possibly, but I get the feeling that regardless of weight, St-Pierre would continue Penn’s run of bad luck.

Invicta FC champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino still wants a fight with Ronda Rousey.

But if she can’t have that, she’s willing to meet Miesha Tate in a battle of champions. Tate, the reigning UFC bantamweight titleholder, meets Amanda Nunes next month at UFC 200.

Cyborg used social media recently to pose the fight to Tate, while also stating that she “can not make 135” when asked about it by a fan.

A huge bout in the UFC women’s division may be unfolding before our very eyes.

In a recent media luncheon to promote her upcoming UFC 200 title bout, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate spoke on the possibility of stepping inside the Octagon with Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino:

“I think it would be really cool to fight Cyborg, honestly,” Tate said. “Like to really see what it’s like to be in there with someone with her power. … I’ll be the first to admit, physically I think I would be at a disadvantage, but I think that I can be the one to prove that I have the heart, the durability, the determination and the will power — and technique — to overcome that kind of challenge. And that intrigues me. That would be very rewarding to me.”

‘Cyborg’ must have caught wind of the 135-pound champion’s comments, because the Brazilian powerhouse striker took to Twitter to offer Tate a formal challenge, to go toe-to-toe inside the Octagon at UFC 205 in Madison Square Garden:

Justino would further elaborate on the terms to which the two women would have to agree too, if the fight were to ever come to fruition:

“I know how this story goes. I’m not going To 135,” Justino wrote. “Beat Amanda. Sign the contract. Then I will see you in New York. We can make it easy for the fans.”

Will the UFC take a potential super-fight between ‘Cyborg’ and Tate into consideration? Who do you think comes out on top?

Chris Weidman Willing To Fight ‘Whoever Wants It’ At MSG

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is still hoping to receive a shot at the title upon his return from injury, but he isn’t too confident that he’ll be granted his wish. Weidman was slated to rematch Luke Rockhold for the title earlier this month at UFC 199, but he was forced to withdraw from the bout, leading Michael Bisping to step up on short notice and knock out Rockhold to become the champion.

Weidman, a Long Island native, has called out Bisping multiple times for a fight at UFC 205 on November 12, 2016 which will mark the UFC’s inaugural trip to New York at the famed Madison Square Garden.

Bisping, however, has seemed more interested in getting revenge on No. 13-ranked Dan Henderson, or perhaps facing off with returning former long-time welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. At this point, Weidman isn’t going to ‘cry’ about it, but he did confirm that he will be willing to fight anyone as he long as he gets his spot on the MSG card:

“I’ll be at Madison Square Garden waiting for whoever wants it. Bisping doesn’t want it. You know, it was my title shot and he had the opportunity because of me. Now he’s trying to fight the thirteenth ranked guy in the division. It’s good for him. Good for him, man. Fight anybody you want. He’s trying to get a ‘W’ under his belt. Hey, if he can make it happen, good for him. I’m not going to cry about it, honestly.” Weidman told MMAJunkie.

chris weidman vs. luke rockhold

If Weidman isn’t given a shot at Bisping, who would you like to see him face off with in New York? Perhaps a rematch with Rockhold would make sense, although divisional supremacy wouldn’t be on the line this time. Fellow top contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza could also present a formidable challenge for Weidman, and the Brazilian should be returning from injury around the November time frame.
