No. 3-ranked UFC welterweight contender Demian Maia is certainly deserving of a title shot after winning six straight bouts with three of those victories coming by way of submission, but the UFC has instead booked a rematch between champion Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson, for March 4’s UFC 209.

Recently speaking on this week’s edition of The MMA Hour, Maia said that the UFC ‘doesn’t care’ if he fights for the title or not, as he believes that the promotion doesn’t see him as a draw:

Maia’s Opinion

”I know why,” he said. “There are two reasons. One, they really don’t care too much If I am going to fight for the title or not. But, the main reason is that they are having problems setting up fights. They have cancelled a couple of events and they need names that can sell. I know even if they say I don’t sell, I know I sell something. I’m a name that can be a co-main event if not a main event with another guy people want to see. They need to book fights and I understand their rush for that.”

While his recent streak speaks for itself, Maia has typically been a quiet fighter, and some have said that his grappling-heavy style isn’t appealing to fans. The Brazilian, however, feels that a problem lies here within the sport, as he sees too much of a focus on ‘money fights’ and fighters who tend to be more active vocally. Maia believes the interest in fights should simply be based on seeing which fighter is the best:

Sh*t Talkers

“That’s another thing I think is a mistake. Every sport in the world, football, soccer, every sport that has many years and is consolidated, people like to watch because they want to see the winner. They don’t watch the NBA, or the Australian open in tennis because they want to see the guy who talks more or the guy is more outspoken. They wants to see (Roger) Federer and (Rafael) Nadal because they are the best. They don’t want to see someone just because they play more fancy. At the end of the day, who follows sport likes to see who wins. Some people like to see people who talk shit, but those are not the people who are going to carry on the sport forever.”

Maia continued by offering a strong stance that MMA simply won’t be able to continue on as it stands, and the short-term focus of ‘money fights’ will be far from sustainable until it ruins the sport:

Uncertain Future?

“If we don’t change as we think as a sport, the sport will be remembered as a nice thing 10 years from now, but it has gone. I don’t think it will last for sure like that. People watched the Super Bowl because they want to see the best teams, not go there to see who talked more or plays different, they want to see the best. The true fans of the sport are the ones that carry on this sport and will influence others to like. So I think it’s a lie when they say they are looking for money fights, that’s just looking for short-term things. If you just keep looking short term, I think you will ruin the sport and end up ruining UFC and people will start to just give up. People will realize it is not a sport anymore and you can not fool the people all the time.”

The veteran’s strong beliefs are hardly without agreement in today’s rapidly-evolving MMA landscape, and it remains to be seen how the trash talk-centered style of booking fights has on the lasting appeal of the still-growing phenomenon.

Maia reportedly does care about fighting for the title, however, as he recently said that he will wait to take on the winner of Woodley vs. Thompson II. Would you like to see the grappling guru fight for the title later this year?

It’s no secret that Tyron Woodley is looking for a big money fight.

Following the majority draw decision after his five-round Fight Of The Night worthy contest with Stephen Thompson at UFC 205, Woodley immediately looked for superfights against the likes of Georges St-Pierre, Nick Diaz, and 185-pound champ Michael Bisping.

This sparked much upset amongst UFC fans and ‘Wonderboy’, who weren’t too pleased with ‘The Chosen One’s’ attempt to evade an immediate rematch with Thompson following the draw. Now, however, the two men are slated to run it back again in the main event of UFC 209, but Woodley recently spoke to FOX Sports to explain why those superfights were so important to him:

“Legacy is really important to me,” Woodley said. “It’s more important than dollars to me. So with that said, I try to find the fights that would solidify my legacy. Beating (Michael) Bisping, winning two belts in two divisions, maybe starting a rivalry and controversy with a fighter and then also knocking off legends like Nick (Diaz) and GSP.

“Those sort of things solidify me and also yeah it puts me in the position to maximize myself as far as being awarded the highest purses. So I’m just trying to kill two birds with one stone.”

With rumors continuing to run rampant regarding the return of former welterweight king Georges St-Pierre, Woodley is foaming at the mouth for the opportunity to step into the ring with ‘Rush’ in attempt to solidify himself as the best 170-pounder to ever step inside the Octagon:

“I’d like to take a crack at being the best welterweight that’s ever fought,” Woodley said. “A lot of people don’t understand my reasoning behind wanting to fight big fights and big names.

“Knocking off these big names in fights really solidifies me as the best welterweight that’s ever done it. Fighting Georges St-Pierre really puts the exclamation point at the end of it. It sounds like (GSP) is serious about coming back and I don’t think it should be a question of anybody fighting him before me.”

While Woodley has met much criticism after attempting to set up superfights, Woodley is seeing fighters such as UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor have been cheered on for their efforts. Woodley doesn’t hold any animosity towards McGregor for trying to create even more hype behind his name, he understands why their respective situations are so different:

“Just to be blatantly honest, everyone occupies in a different set of rules,” Woodley said. “Ronda Rousey operates in a different set of rules than Conor McGregor. Conor McGregor operates under a different set of rules that Jon Jones. There’s something about somebody who does something special in the UFC that they’re allotted certain freedoms and wiggle room around the rules.

“I’m just not in that category. So if I want to fight Georges St-Pierre or Nick Diaz or Nate Diaz then it’s all the hooplah and all the talk about it.”

Would you like to see Woodley step into the Octagon against the likes of ‘GSP’ or Diaz?

Stephen Thompson Irritated By Woodley’s ‘Stupid’ Focus On Race

Stephen Thompson isn’t buying Tyron Woodley’s ‘worst treated champion in history’ claim.

Leading up to Woodley and Thompson’s initial meeting at UFC 205 this past November ‘The Chosen One’ claims that ‘Wonderboy’ was being promoted as the champion heading into the contest. Woodley pointed to racial discrimination by both the UFC and fans as a key reason for this.

Thompson recently spoke to Submission Radio (quotes via Bloody Elbow) to discuss his UFC 209 opponent’s claims, and stated that he doesn’t believe Woodley has been champion long enough to feel like the worst treated title-holder in UFC history:

“The guy hasn’t been champion long enough to even feel that way, I believe,” Thompson said. “I mean, to me it seems like the most hated champion would be Bisping, you know what I mean?”

The pair’s match-up at UFC 205 ended in a controversial majority draw decision after a spectacular welterweight title contest in the night’s co-main event. Now the two will run it back once again in the main event of UFC 209 this March in Vegas to determine who the better man truly is.

Before both men signed on the dotted line for an immediate rematch, however, Woodley was openly campaigning for fights with other opponents such as Nick Diaz or Demian Maia. Thompson believes this is what brings about the dislike towards Woodley from fans, not the color of his skin:

“For me, he hasn’t defended the title like he’s supposed to. So automatically getting that rematch and just looking for other fighters and riding on other people’s coattails, maybe have given him or the fans a bad taste in their mouth.”

“But when it comes to race, that’s stupid. I mean, that’s just stupid. One of the highest paid athletes in the UFC is Jon Jones, and pretty much whatever happened to him, he did to himself. And Anderson Silva on the other hand too. So I don’t get it. You know what, it kind of irritates me cause he’s focused on that when he should be focusing more on the fight at hand, because I don’t want to step out there March 4thand face off against a distracted Tyron Woodley. I fight for the glory and I want to fight the best when I step out there March 4th and I want him to be focused on it. So that’s my two cents on that, and I just think it’s ridiculous.”

As to whether or not Woodley is being discriminated by the UFC, that isn’t something Thompson can attest to as he doesn’t know what negotiations between the promotion and the welterweight champ are like:

“Maybe that’s where he’s getting all that from – maybe not from the UFC, but from the fans. That’s what I see.”

“On the other hand, I don’t see what goes on from his point of view when he’s negotiating with the UFC. Of course, I’m not there with him during those negotiations or things like that. So maybe, I don’t know, I’m missing something or maybe he sees something different just because I’m not there during his negotiations and chats with the UFC. But from my side, for him to pull that, it’s not necessary.”

Woodley has recently said that the relationship between him and the UFC has improved as of late, and is prepared to defend his title once again when he steps into the Octagon with ‘Wonderboy’ for the second consecutive time. Do you think Woodley is fully focused on his bout with Thompson?

Rashad Evans’ latest comeback attempt is set for March 4’s UFC 209 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

News came last night from ESPN that Evans will return to face former Olympic judoka Dan Kelly at the rapidly developing card. Evans’ third attempt at a middleweight debut will take place pending clearance from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Former light heavyweight champion Evans was set to take on Tim Kennedy in his original middleweight debut at last November’s UFC 205, but some reported irregularities with his pre-fight MRI led the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) to deny him a license to fight. The bout was rescheduled for December 10’s UFC 206 from Toronto, Ontario, but once again the presiding athletic commission decided to deny him a chance to fight after following the precedent set by New York.

He’s insisted that everything was fine with his medical records and that there was a mistake made that lead to him being denied. Evans affirmed he had visited multiple specialists for the issue and had passed all tests with “flying colors.” For their part, an NSAC official told ESPN that Evans would go through all “normal medical procedures” in order to be licensed for the fight.

Long one of the UFC’s most recognizable stars, Evans finally decided to make the cut down to 185 pounds after two consecutive losses, a brutal knockout to Glover Teixeira and a one-sided decision to Ryan Bader, following nearly two years off to recover from a serious knee injury prior to his scheduled UFC 170 showdown with current champion Daniel Cormier in early 2014.

‘Suga’ will return to face a largely unknown competitor who has quietly racked up a three-fight win streak in Kelly, who was most recently seen outlasting veteran Chris Camozzi by decision at November’s UFC Fight Night 101. The 39-year-old Australian has won five out of his six total UFC bouts, with the one loss a technical knockout at the hands of Sam Alvey. Boasting a 12-1 overall record, Kelly was called out by name by rising middleweight Eric Spicely following his submission win at last weekend’s UFC on FOX 23, but received a much more high-profile opponent instead.

The fight joins a card featuring the awaited welterweight title rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson in the main event, while Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson are set to finally go to war for the interim lightweight title in the co-main event.
