Top UFC women’s bantamweight contender Raquel Pennington was reportedly set for the biggest bout of her mixed martial arts (MMA) career, but apparently, that will have to wait until next year.

According to a report from Combate.com, Pennington accepted a fight with current UFC women’s 135-pound champion Amanda Nunes at December 30’s UFC 219 from Las Vegas, but then broke her leg in a car accident yesterday (Wed., October 25, 2017) in Colorado. The report offered no specifics on Pennington’s injury and expected recovery time.

The bout had not been officially announced by the UFC, but Nunes and Pennington had supposedly both agreed to the bout’s date and location. Nunes was not given a replacement opponent as of this writing and will apparently wait until 2018 for her next fight.

It’s another disappointing setback for the previously surging Pennington, who has been out of action with a series of injuries since her unanimous decision win over former champion Miesha Tate at November 2016’s UFC 205, her fourth straight win in a row.

She was set to take on her biggest-ever challenge in the surging Nunes, who, despite criticism of her controversial UFC 215 decision win over rival Valentina Shevchenko, has defended the women’s bantamweight belt two times.

Clearly the most deserving contender in a contender-starved women’s bantamweight division, Pennington’s return will now extend well into 2018, leaving her out of action for going on a year-and-a-half when she returns.

Dominick Cruz hasn’t competed since surrendering his 135-pound title to Cody Garbrandt in the co-main event of December 2016’s UFC 207, but he’s set to make his return against surging contender Jimmie Rivera at UFC 219 on Dec. 30, 2017 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Although Cruz will certainly make less money due to the fight not being a title fight, he recent said that he’s viewing it no different than any of his previous fights:

“We don’t make near as much money — we don’t get paid near the same — unless we fight for the belt,” Cruz said in a recent interview with ESPN.com. “It doesn’t matter, though. Jimmie Rivera, to me, is the title fight. This is how I’ve approached every fight until now: The person they put in front of me is the title. That’s it.”

Prior to his loss to “No Love”, Cruz had won an incredible 13-straight fights. Many had considered him the very best bantamweight of all time, and many likely still do, but he’ll face a stiff test in the rising Rivera.

The 28-year-old has compiled an ultra impressive 20-fight wining streak that includes five consecutive Octagon victories. He’s most recently beaten Urijah Faber and Thomas Almeida, while establishing himself as a legitimate threat at 135 pounds.

Cruz doesn’t seem to be worried, however.

“I just have to be me, man,” Cruz said. “Me being me doesn’t lose to Jimmie Rivera. But more importantly, a healthy me doesn’t lose to anybody in the world.”

The stakes are high for this fight, as the winner will likely take on the winner of Nov. 4’s title fight between Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw.

After successfully defending his title against grappling guru Demian Maia at UFC 214 this past July, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley received quite a bit of criticism, including from UFC President Dana White, due to many feeling the fight was boring.

Former Woodley foe and former interim 170-pound champion Carlos Condit, who will make his return against Neil Magny at UFC 219 on Dec. 30, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada, recently said that he can see where Woodley’s critics are coming from:

“I can definitely see where the critics are coming from,” Condit said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “We’re athletes but we’re also entertainers, people buy the pay-per-view to be entertained. That’s part of this. This is show business. I know that winning is super important and a gameplan is super important, but at some point you have to, this is the hurt business and you gotta to try to put your opponent out.”

Condit, who’s known for being an exciting fighter and a finisher, feels as if Woodley could’ve ‘turned it on’ against Maia and went for the finish:

“You know he’s obviously a super, super talented dude,” Condit said. “I did watch the last fight against Maia. I felt like he at a time where he could he really could have turned it on and tried to finish, he didn’t.”

Condit, who could very well still be one of the best welterweights in the world, hasn’t competed since being submitted by Maia in August 2016. He’s lost two of his last three as well, with one of those losses coming via injury to Woodley.

While a rematch between him and Woodley could certainly take place in the future, “The Natural Born Killer” seems to be taking his return to the Octagon slowly:

“I don’t I don’t really think about it all that much. I’m really looking at small, incremental things right now. That’s big picture, but for now it’s really just getting back in fight shape, getting firing on all cylinders, getting my weapons sharp again, that’s my thought process and my priority,” Condit said.

Do you expect Condit to make another return?
