Henry Cejudo Chimes In On Possible Demetrious Johnson Trilogy Fight

Henry Cejudo did the unthinkable at UFC 227 when he defeated DJ to become the new flyweight champ. Despite a super close decision, Cejudo isn’t too crazy about a Demetrious Johnson trilogy fight.

Henry Cejudo did the unthinkable at UFC 227 when he captured the flyweight championship of the world. But a rematch may not be guaranteed for the former champ, as Cejudo isn’t to hip on a Demetrious Johnson trilogy fight.

Mixed martial arts is a sport of uncertainty. As in life, absolutely nothing is guaranteed in MMA. “Mighty Mouse” is the most prolific champion in modern MMA. You can agree he is the greatest champion of all time. But that doesn’t necessarily translate into an automatic rematch against Cejudo for the flyweight title.

“I would agree when it comes to the statistics side of it,” Cejudo recently said on the Ariel Helwani MMA Show when discussing Johnson’s bid for a trilogy bout. “But at the same time, I know what the UFC’s trying to create, man. I had to wait two and a half years to face Demetrious Johnson.”

“I had to wait, too. And it’s also good, too, for our weight class to start new storylines that have nothing to do with Demetrious Johnson. We need new storylines in our weight class.”

It’s unclear if Johnson will be competing anytime soon after suffering some injuries at UFC 227. Be that as it may, Cejudo thinks anyone besides DJ is necessary for the division’s sake.

“Think about it…let’s just say Demetrious Johnson beats me for the trilogy,” Cejudo said. “Again, that goes back to not building a storyline. I think Demetrious Johnson may agree with me. Just for the sake of our weight class, I think it would be good. I think it would be good to see somebody else, for now, except for Demetrious Johnson.”

UFC 227 Medical Suspensions: Cody Garbrandt Facing Max Term

The UFC 227 medical suspensions are in, and former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is facing a lengthy term.

“No Love” took on archrival TJ Dillashaw in the main event of last weekend’s (Sat., August 4, 2018) pay-per-view (PPV) from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. There, he lost by knockout for a second straight bout with “The Viper,” meanwhile ending his heated rivalry with his former friend.

While that seems like enough punishment, Garbrandt will face more agony due to the UFC 227 medical suspensions. Garbrandt will face a potential six-month suspension for a broken right hand. He can avoid the maximum term if cleared by a physician. The one-time champ is also facing 45 days for the knockout loss.

Dillashaw was only given a seven-day mandatory suspension in a win. Meanwhile, co-main fighters Henry Cejudo and Demetrious Johnson also received only seven days.

CSAC Recommends Two UFC 227 Fighters Move Up In Weight

The CSAC is cracking down on weight-cutting regulations.

The post CSAC Recommends Two UFC 227 Fighters Move Up In Weight appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has recommended two fighters from UFC 227 move up in weight.

CSAC has recommended that Alex Perez and Brett Johns move up in weight after their respective bouts on the Los Angeles card.

Per a report from MMA Fighting, both men came in over CSAC’s fight-day weight check regulations.

The recommendation will be noted in the Association Of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports’ (ABC) database. Perez has been requested to move up to bantamweight, while Johns is being recommended for a featherweight jump. They will be allowed to stay in their current respective divisions if given clearance by a doctor. Other commissions have respected CSAC’s recommendations so far, only allowing fighters to compete at the lower weight class with the doctor’s approval.

Perez went from weighing 126 pounds on weigh-in day to 146.5 pounds on fight day. That’s a weight gain percentage of 16.3 percent. Johns went from 135.2 pounds to 158 pounds on fight day for a 16.2 percent gain.

Johns and Perez gained the most weight of any fighters on the card. The pair, along with all but six fighters competing on the card, came in over the CSAC’s regulation of 10 percent.

CSAC executive officer Andy Foster revealed that the other 16 fighters who gained over 10 percent were so close to the number that they were given the benefit of the doubt.

Foster also noted that fighters are weighted upon their arrival to the arena, not in the morning. It’s possible they came in heavier due to extra hydration before their fight.

As for Perez and Johns, Perez’s manager, Jason House, has already confirmed that a doctor has cleared his client to continue fighting at flyweight. He plans to continue his UFC career in the weight class.

Johns has not commented on the situation as of this writing.

Report: ‘Serious’ Injury Kept Alexander Gustafsson Off UFC 227

Alexander Gustafsson’s injury was more serious than initially revealed.

The post Report: ‘Serious’ Injury Kept Alexander Gustafsson Off UFC 227 appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

The injury that kept Alexander Gustafsson off last weekend’s UFC 227 was apparently more serious than first revealed.

“The Mauler’s” original opponent Volkan Oezdemir pulled out of their scheduled main card bout. Anthony Smith soon knocked out Shogun Rua in Hamburg and immediately called out Gustafsson as a late replacement.

Gustafsson was forced out with a ‘minor’ undisclosed injury shortly thereafter, however. More than a bit of speculation arose based on the timing.

UFC President Dana White recently refuted those claims. Speaking on “The Mauler” during the ‘UFC Unfiltered’ podcast (via MMAjunkie), White said Gustafsson was seriously hurt:

“It wasn’t a minor injury; he actually had a serious injury to his hamstring. He doesn’t have to do surgery. He’s doing physical therapy, and we’re hoping he can come back before the end of the year. He was hurt, a legitimate injury, and he’s working on it. We’re trying to get him in before the end of the year.”

Gustafsson has long campaigned for a rematch with UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. The two met in a classic five-round war in 2015, where Cormier emerged with a narrow split decision win.

His main goal is an understandable one with Cormier set to retire next year. Gustafsson has been out of action since a thrilling fifth-round knockout of Glover Teixeira in May 2017 and has never been the most consistent of fighters.

Gustafsson is obviously recovering from a significant injury, but one thing he has going for him is that Cormier is injured too.

Time will tell if “The Mauler” receives the title shot he’s been angling for.
