TJ Dillashaw Breaks Down Cody Garbrandt’s Mistakes After UFC 227 Win

TJ Dillashaw had some harsh words for Cody Garbrandt.

It didn’t take long for UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, who scored a first round KO victory over Cody Garbrandt in the main event of Saturday’s (August, 4, 2018) UFC 227 pay-per-view event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, to break down the mistakes that the former champion made in their second meeting inside of the Octagon.

If you recall, their first fight went down at the UFC 217 pay-per-view event at Madison Square Garden in New York City in November where Dillashaw finished Garbrandt to win back the bantamweight title.

The finish of the fight at UFC 227 saw Dillashaw land ferocious flurry in the first round following dropping Garbrandt at first with a right hook, which came as no surprise to Dillashaw as he noted to the media after the fight that he knew in their first fight that Garbrandt had a poor chin and believes it was proven again Saturday.

“I think he has some technical problems that he needs to fix,” Dillashaw said at UFC 227’s post-fight press conference (transcript courtesy of MMAFighting). “And I really don’t believe he’s got a chin. He plays a dangerous game. He likes to get in there and he likes to slug it.”

“We were planning on him throwing a right hand,” Dillashaw said. “Every time he throws a right hand, he drops his left. He’s looking to throw a left hook. He’s fast. He throws a big right, left hand. But he drops it to his pocket. So were planning on timing it.”

“It wasn’t anything in sparring,” Dillashaw said. “Cody was coming into the team as I was leaving, so we didn’t really get to work out as much as has been in the media. It was more when I hit him in the first fight with my foot. I dropped him with that left kick. I didn’t feel like that left kick had anything on it, but it affected him.”

When Garbrandt won the bantamweight title at UFC 207, it set up a rivalry fight for one of the hottest feuds in MMA over the past couple of years, and the two fighters had been jawing at each other publicly since Dillashaw left Alpha Male. Due to their bad blood and with the belief that Garbrandt can rebound, it’s likely we see a third fight between these two stars.

The California State Athletic Commission released some of the UFC 227 salaries on Sunday morning and some of the top tier talents got paid some major cash.

The UFC 227 pay-per-view event took place on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California with the main card aired on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FX at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

This event was headlined by a bantamweight title fight pitting champion TJ Dillashaw against Cody Garbrandt in a rematch while Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo in a flyweight title rematch served as the co-main event.

Johnson earned $380,000 despite the fact that he fell to Cejudo by split decision and losing the UFC flyweight title in the process as up to this point, Johnson had won a UFC record 11 straight title defenses coming in, which was a historic milestone, while on the flip side, Cejudo pulled in a guaranteed $100,000 but it should be noted that Johnson and Cejudo earned a fight bonus and that Johnson likely got a piece of the pay-per-view revenue for the event.

Meanwhile, in the co-main event, Dillashaw pulled in a guaranteed $350,000 for the bout that saw him win by first round KO while Garbrandt made a guaranteed $200,000. Rounding out the five bout main card was Thiago Santos vs. Kevin Holland middleweight bout, Polyana Viana vs. JJ Aldrich in a women’s strawweight bout, and Cub Swanson vs. Renato Moicano in a featherweight bout.

Pedro Munhoz vs. Brett Johns in a bantamweight bout headlined the preliminary portion of this card. Part of the UFC 227 payouts include the following, courtesy of MMA Fighting:

Demetrious Johnson: $380,000

T.J. Dillashaw: $350,000

Cody Garbrandt: $200,000

Henry Cejudo: $100,000

Cub Swanson: $90,000

Renato Moicano: $52,000

TJ Dillashaw Responds To Henry Cejudo’s Challenge

Henry Cejudo is already trying to get his next fight booked.

It didn’t take long for UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo to campaign for his next fight inside of the Octagon under the UFC banner after beating Demetrious Johnson to capture the title by split decision in the co-main event of Saturday’s (August, 4, 2018) UFC 227 pay-per-view event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Following the fight, Cejudo called for a fight against UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, who scored a first round KO victory over Cody Garbrandt in the main event, despite an obvious trilogy bout with Johnson that makes the most sense due to the fact that Johnson was on top of the division for such a long period of time and because Cejudo won by split decision along with Johnson having several injuries.

Cejudo made it clear that he is open to the third fight with Johnson as he lost by first round TKO back at the UFC 197 event in August of 2016 but noted that he is more than willing to jump back up to bantamweight to challenge Dillashaw for his championship.

“They’ve always talked about T.J. and DJ superfight,” Cejudo said to MMA Fighting. “They neglected Henry Cejudo in the promos, they neglected Henry Cejudo in practically everything, and I get it, because America’s all about winners. But now that I’m the winner, I’m asking.

“I’m an Olympic champ, I’m a UFC champ, and now I’m asking to be a triple champ. Forget about the champ champ. I want to be a triple champ. Allow me to go up to 135 pounds, allow me to face T.J. Dillashaw. If he wants to come down, we can talk. I want to go up. I want to make history.”

Of course, once taking the stage for the UFC 227 pay-per-view post-fight press conference, one of the biggest questions was if Dillashaw would be interested in taking on Cejudo at bantamweight but the only problem with that is the fact that he sounded a little less excited about the prospect.

“I don’t really think the guy would deserve it,” Dillashaw said.

It will be interesting to see if the UFC books these two fighters against each other as Cejudo will likely wait for Johnson to get healthy and fight for a third time while there are several top contenders for Dillashaw to fight next, but time will tell how this all plays out.
