Henry Cejudo shocked the world in the co-main event of Saturday’s (August 4, 2018) UFC 227 pay-per-view event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California when he was able to beat Demetrious Johnson to capture the UFC flyweight title by split decision.

Johnson came into this fight looking to defend his title successfully for the 12th time in his career but that was not the case as Cejudo improved from their first meeting when he lost by first round TKO back at the UFC 197 event in August of 2016 and since that fight, Cejudo went onto pick up victories over Wilson Reis by TKO at UFC 215 and Sergio Pettis by unanimous decision at UFC 218.

At UFC 227, Cejudo earned the right to be known as the first man to beat Johnson since October 2011, which snapped Johnson’s 11 consecutive successful title defenses.

“It’s a true testimony of an underdog,” Cejudo said to MMA Fighting. “I lasted the first fight with Demetrious Johnson two minutes and 36 seconds, and I felt like it was going that way in the very first round too. Those calf kicks, really I couldn’t plant. I was forced to switch southpaw, but it actually helped me. Before all this, I said in order for me to beat Demetrious, it had to be with distance, timing, and composure. And that’s exactly how we took this fight. He got to my legs and that was okay. I wanted Demetrious to work.

“This is surreal. This is a kid who was born 10 miles away from Staples Center, the ghetto streets of South Central LA, to Mexican immigrants, to being an Olympic champion at the age of 21. My mother wasn’t able to go to the Olympics due to her citizenship status to her becoming a U.S. citizen about eight years ago, and me now, 10 years later, being an Olympic champion now carrying UFC gold — it really is a dream come true. On August 19 (2008), I became the youngest in history to ever win an Olympic gold medal (in wrestling), and on August 4, I defeated the man, the myth, the legend Demetrious Johnson. It feels super good.”

In regards to his strategy, he told the media that he knew early in the fight that he needed to force Johnson to expend energy in scrambles and take fewer hits.

“I had to deal with the cards that I was dealt with,” Cejudo said. “In those situations, I had to keep mixing and making it awkward for him, and I noticed even with Demetrious that the more you make him scramble, he gets tired. He gets tired, he’s human, and I said it before: He bleeds just like me. Tonight was my night.

“I think it was patience,” he continued when asked to elaborate further. “I think that was key, and timing, and not allowing a lot of his movement to disorient me. Because he moves a lot, he’s super hard to hit. He’s got a tiny head, like somehow it’s big from the back, but his face, it’s small. So when you fight Demetrious, it’s a small target.

“He’s unlike any other flyweight and I think that was the difference. Like, I’ve got to wait for my opportunity. I might have to get hit a couple of times to give a good hard blow and then transition to my wrestling.”

A rematch between Johnson and Cejudo makes sense but with Johnson revealing that he has some injuries, it will be interesting to see when the UFC books these two fighters once again.

Demetrious Johnson’s record-breaking run of title defenses came to a screeching halt when he lost a close split decision to Henry Cejudo at last night’s (Sat., August 4, 2018) UFC 227 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

The fight may just have been the best flyweight title fight in the history of the UFC (watch highlights here), with each elite competitor having their moments. Cejudo was more successful with his Olympic gold medal-winning wrestling and top control, and Johnson landed a steady stream of kicks. It came down to the judges’ scorecards, and “The Messenger” won the fifth and final frame on all three judges’ cards to score the huge upset.

After the jaw-dropping win, UFC President Dana White addressed the title bout and the score at the post-fight press conference, giving respect to both fighters for their amazing effort:

“Yeah. It’s incredible what he’s done. And tonight’s fight was close. I don’t know how you guys scored it but I had it 2-2 going into that last round, but who gives a **** what I think, but that’s how I had it. Very close fight. First of all, what a technical battle that fight was. Both guys are so incredibly talented. And, um, how much better Henry Cejudo is now from the first time he fought Demetrious Johnson is impressive.”

White was asked about Cejudo’s callout of bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw for his next fight, and he noted that while he didn’t know what was next for the new champ, he loved the attitude. In fact, he even compared the optimistic callout to the strategy of Conor McGregor:

“I love guys that wanna fight everybody. I love guys who are willing to jump in, and I think the fans love guys like that too. So that’s always good to hear, I love; I don’t know but we’ll see what’s next and we’ll figure it out.

“But you know, the reason Conor McGregor’s such a huge star is cause he’s that guy – he’ll do that and jump around and fight anywhere and fight anybody, and when you have that mentality, people like it.”

White then addressed the supposed criticism UFC 227 was receiving in the week leading up to the card, with much of it being because the lineup featured fighters from lower weight classes. White brushed it off, focusing on the fact they had sold out The Staples Center in Los Angeles:

“I didn’t hear that. Alright, when isn’t there criticism? We’re always gonna have criticism. This card was full of the small guys, you know what I mean? The first fight of the night, the second fight was women and small guys. We sold out The Staples Center, every A-list celebrity and you know, whos-who in Hollywood was here tonight; you know, what are you gonna do?

“It was an awesome night, a very successful night, and I’m happy.”

Further expounding on the popularity of the flyweight division, White said that after years of essentially being the stepchild of the UFC, tonight’s card full of great fights at the lower weight classes attended by many top celebrities was an indicator why it was now making waves.

And even though Johnson may have lost to Cejudo on the night, his body of work proved the overall evolution of the division – something the fans loved according to White:

“Listen, I think the popularity of the flyweights was there tonight. I mean, what more do we need? I told you the place was packed with A-list celebrities, sold out The Staples Center, you know, the small guys did almost a $3 million gate tonight with a sold-out Staples Center. And the crowd was very into that fight, it’s the “Fight of the Night,” and I think that when you saw scrambles with these guys, the crowd reacted to ’em, they were very educated on what was going on.

“I mean, I think we’re there, and I think that Demetrious Johnson’s reign, and what he’s done, and I’ve talked about this to many of you this week, this guy not only got better with every fight but he started finishing people in spectacular fashion. And I think that from the walk-in to their announcement that Buffer gave ’em to the fight to the end, the crowd loved it and they were into it, and you know, it was a very successful night.”

Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson has been defeated.

In the co-main event of last night’s (Sat. August 4, 2018) UFC 227 pay-per-view (PPV) event, Johnson was bested by former Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo via split decision. Cejudo now becomes the first man to ever defeat Johnson at 125 pounds and the second ever UFC flyweight champion in history.

Johnson handled the loss rather well, speaking to media at the UFC 227 post-fight press conference. He said he’s fine in regards to the loss, and acknowledged that losing happens to all great champions.

“Mighty Mouse” also reminded everyone that it’s not the first time he has suffered defeat, as he lost to Dominick Cruz back in 2011 in his last fight at bantamweight.

He also revealed that he suffered a few injuries during his fight with Cejudo as well:

“I’m fine,” Johnson said. “Losing happens, every great champion loses. I’ve lost before, when I fought Dom (Dominick Cruz). I lose in the gym, so I’m fine. I’m more upset by the injuries, other than that I’m good.

“I think I tore my right LCL, and then my right foot might be broken. I think the right LCL probably happened in the second or third round – I remember we were scrambling, and I maybe shot and he kind of like pushed me over and I landed on my right knee and I was like –

“I heard the pop and I was like “Oh, there goes the right LCL, fantastic. The foot, that’s just from kicking and kicking and kicking and kicking.”

As for Cejudo, he has called out UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw. Cejudo cuts a lot of weight to get down to 125 pounds and is chasing the opportunity of becoming a double UFC champion.

Last night (Sat. August 4, 2018) UFC 227 went down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

One of the more prominently featured fights on the card was a featherweight match-up between Cub Swanson and Renato Moicano. Moicano shocked a lot of fans when he landed a beautiful straight punch right down the pipe to plant Swanson down.

The Brazilian subsequently locked in a rear-naked choke for the submission win. His victory was enough for a Performance Of The Night bonus and has earned him an extra $50,000.

In the main event of the night, UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw once again knocked out Cody Garbrandt with the 135-pound gold title on the line. This time, however, Dillashaw’s victory came in the first round. He retains his title, once again finishes his rival and picked up a Performance Of The Night bonus worth $50,000.

Finally, it was the co-main event of the evening that stole the show. Henry Cejudo and Demetrious Johnson absolutely went to war for five rounds. When it was all said and done, the former Olympic gold medalist became the first man in UFC history to defeat “Mighty Mouse” at 125 pounds. Their performances earned them Fight Of The Night honors, and they will both take home an extra $50,000.

The mixed martial arts (MMA) world was turned upside down when Henry Cejudo dethroned longtime UFC flyweight champion Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson in the co-main event of last night’s (Sat., August 4, 2018) UFC 227 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

The fight was a close, hard-fought war (full highlights here) that went the full five rounds, and at the end, it was anyone’s guess as to who had won according to the judges. Ultimately Cejudo was declared the winner by split decision, a call some agreed with and others thought was simply not enough of an effort to end the longest string of consecutive title defenses in UFC history.

Cejudo appeared to win rounds two and four on the strength of his wrestling, while Johnson scored in the striking department with a varied kicking attack. So with the pivotal decision coming down to the fifth and final round, Cejudo ended with a vicious flurry to put an image in the judges’ heads. It must have worked, as all three judges gave ‘The Messenger’ the final round.
