Colby Covington has broken his silence on the UFC 228 situation. Covington is the interim UFC welterweight champion, but that won’t last. “Chaos” ended up having to undergo nasal surgery. With Woodley having been out of action since July 2017, UFC officials didn’t want to wait. As a result, Woodley will defend his welterweight title […]

Tyron Woodley Goes Off On Colby Covington For Declining UFC 228 Fight

Tyron Woodley didn’t hold back.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has his next title defense set against rising prospect Darren Till at the upcoming UFC 228 pay-per-view event but that hasn’t stopped not only the media but also the champ from talking about interim welterweight champion Colby Covington.

It’s well known that Covington was supposed to be the next in line for Woodley and the title but Covington recently underwent surgery to correct a nasal issue, which obviously would lead to some recovery time as a result but the UFC needs fights and they are on this trend of having two title fights for all pay-per-view events. Thus, UFC decided it would strip Covington of the belt after he declined a fight at UFC 228 because he’s out until October or November.

Woodley recently went on the attack on Covington as he was asked if Covington would be his next opponent if he can get past Till, which the welterweight champ responded, “no.”

“He’s basically shown us he’s a (expletive), and he never really wanted to fight in the first place,” Woodley told reporters including MMAJunkie backstage at UFC 227 on Saturday at Staples Center. “That was for you guys. I’m willing to beat anybody. You guys, the fans, and Brazil, and all the people he disrespected, and people that knew his antics were complete frickin’ horrible scripted elementary antics, you guys wanted to see him get his *** whooped. And I was just going to do it because he was next up.”

“It was quiet,” Woodley said. “Jon (Jones) was gone. Conor (McGregor) was gone. Ronda (Rousey) said peace out. What did we really have? So why am I going to shutter his dreams and remove the cape on his whole show. Hey, if it builds up a fight with me, I’ll make some money. You’re the easiest matchup in the division. Why not let it go forward?

“Now, it’s a different opponent (in Till), one that style-wise presents way more threats to me. Bigger, stronger, more powerful, hungrier, and actually means what he says. He doesn’t say much, but what he says he really means it.”

The UFC 228 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, September 8, 2018 in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center.

Video: Michael Bisping Destroys “Empty-Handed” Colby Covington

Michael Bisping just laid into Colby Covington – all while drinking a beer.

Earlier this week, the UFC made the call to grant Darren Till the next UFC welterweight title shot over interim champion Colby Covington.

The loudmouthed “Chaos” insisted he needed more time off to recover from sinus surgery following his decision win over Rafael dos Anjos at June 9’s UFC 225, a call that obviously didn’t sit well with his employers, who needed a headliner for September 8’s UFC 228 pay-per-view (PPV).

It was a somewhat strange (although not wholly surprising) set of circumstances that elicited a sport-wide reaction suggesting the many interim titles created by the UFC are simply worthless. Few felt sorry for the over-the-top, at-times offensive Covington, however, and that not surprisingly includes former UFCmmiddleweight champion Michael Bisping.

“The Count” sounded off on Covington, with whom he had a highly-publicized on-air spat with following UFC 225, in a video from MMAjunkie:

“That’s why I told Colby Covington to take a long walk off a short pier when he talked **** on that thing. Everyone was like, ‘Oh, he just won the belt, how can you talk ****?’ I said, ‘No he didn’t just win the belt!’ Is he the champion right now? No! Colby Covington, good luck going to President Trump with empty hands. At least I’m holding a beer, what are you holding, dumb (expletive)?”

Love him or hate him, Bisping may have won this leg of his ongoing feud with Covington, because “Chaos” doesn’t have a belt anymore – right or wrong.

What are your thoughts on the messy welterweight title picture?

Tyron Woodley Shuts Down Concern About Darren Till Fight

Tyron Woodley made his feelings known.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley fully understands the concern that some fight fans have about his next title defense against rising prospect Darren Till at the upcoming UFC 228 pay-per-view event.

That concern is Till’s weight as it has been widely talked about that he missed weight the day before he was supposed to fight former title contender Stephen Thomson and had to stay below 188 pounds until a few hours before the fight in order for the commission to sanction it but if you recall, he originally weighed in three pounds heavier than the maximum welterweight limit, which is 171.

As seen in the main event of UFC Liverpool event that aired live on FOX Sports 1 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England, the rising prospect picked up a unanimous decision win over former title contender but it was a close fight that has some people saying Till won while others say that Thompson won the fight.

Woodley shut down that concern by stating recently that he will fight Till even if he does end up missing weight.

“If Till misses weight we’re still gonna fight, it just won’t be a world title fight for him and he’ll have to forfeit a percentage of his purse,” Woodley said recently on his Instagram Live (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting).“This is a big fight for him. It’s a world title opportunity and my gut says he’s gonna rise to the occasion. Whatever problems he had in the past with making weight, I believe he’s gonna make it. It’s too big of an opportunity for him not to. [And if he doesn’t] I’m not gonna hold up the fight. One or two pounds ain’t gonna really change up the dynamic or outcome of the fight so I’m gonna go into it confident and not worry about that.”

The UFC 228 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, September 8, 2018 in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center with the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Quote: Darren Till Getting Woodley Fight ‘Devalues’ UFC Belts

The welterweight title circus continues.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley will defend his title against No. 2-ranked Darren Till at UFC 228 on September 8th – not interim 170-pound champion Colby Covington.

Covington captured the division’s interim title when he took a unanimous decision win over Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 225 last month. It set up a unification bout with Woodley at some point down the road, or so we thought.

Due to a sinus injury, Covington wasn’t able to fight Woodley until later this year. Rather than wait for the unification bout between Woodley and Covington, the UFC has decided to give Till the nod instead. As for what will become of Covington’s interim strap, that will be stripped and rendered useless the minute Woodley vs. Till starts.

Mike Brown, Covington’s MMA coach, recently spoke to MMA Fighting about the situation. In Brown’s view, the UFC giving Till the title fight instead of waiting for Covington essentially devalues their title belts:

“I’m pretty bummed about it,” Brown said. “I just feel like its devaluing the belts. You can’t just make every fight a title fight if it doesn’t go your way. It just doesn’t seem right, it doesn’t seem like it’s good for long-term value for the titles. That’s a big problem. That’s the bottom line, I think they’re devaluing the belts. Everybody sees it.”

As for Covington, Brown reveals that his fighter is understandably upset but feels confident that he’ll get the opportunity to fight the winner when Woodley and Till’s meeting in Dallas comes to an end:

“He’s of course upset,” Brown said. “But what are you gonna do? Life goes on. Whatever happens, he’s gonna be the biggest fight after this that they’re gonna want to make. What’s next, they want to do it quickly. But after that, there’s gonna be something else that will be next.

“I think that he’ll be the guy they’ll want to fight the winner, I’m sure. He’s the guy that I think has earned that spot. I think he’s also drawing a lot of attention. I think it’ll also have the best numbers. I’m sure we’ll see it. But it’s just a shame how they’re going about it.”

Woodley and Covington have had serious issues with one another for the past year. The American Top Team (ATT) teammates have been at each other’s throats through the media for the past several months.

While a big drama show between Covington and Woodley might have been an interesting build, “T-Wood” will instead have to shift his focus to the 25-year-old Englishman who comes off a big win over Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson:

“I think the bigger fight would have been Colby,” Brown said. “Let it wait a couple months. “Everybody wants that fight. I think Woodley wants the fight, I think Colby wants the fight. I think a couple months later wouldn’t have hurt anything. It’s really frustrating.”
