UFC Champ: Only Conor McGregor Can Throw The Lead Uppercut

One UFC champion has some high praise for Conor McGregor.

It’s no secret that Conor McGregor is one of the best strikers in the UFC.

“The Notorious One” has become well-known for his powerful left hand, which has been the downfall of many who challenge him inside the Octagon. The Irishman has shown brilliant technique and poise inside the cage over the past several years.

So much so, in fact, that one UFC champion believes that McGregor is the only man that can get away with throwing a lead uppercut combination. UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier recently admitted he hates the combo.

This was shortly after Darren Till’s defeat to Tyron Woodley at UFC 228. Till only threw one shot the entire fight – a lead uppercut combination. Despite his dislike for the strike, Cormier said McGregor is the only combatant that can get away with throwing it (via Bloody Elbow):

“Darren Till threw one shot,” Cormier said. “When he finally decided to go — I’ve always hated this combination.

“The only person that should ever throw a lead uppercut, punch down the middle is Conor McGregor. He’s the only person that has successfully done that time and time again.

“Conor goes uppercut, straight left hand. Everybody else: stop! No I’m serious. Everybody else, stop! Chuck Liddell almost got killed against Rashad Evans because [he did] that. And now look at Darren Till.

“You can not throw that. It’s a flawed technique. Because when you do this, and you’re loading that counter-hand, when you’re loading that second punch… You are so exposed [to the counter].”

McGregor will get the chance to show off that combination very soon.

He’ll be returning at UFC 229 to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight championship. It all goes down from the T-Mobile Arena on October 6th.

Cormier currently awaits the return of Brock Lesnar, who he’s believed to be making his first career heavyweight title defense against in early 2019.

Very little has been heard from Conor McGregor heading into October 6’s UFC 229 from Las Vegas.

Apparently, that’s okay, however, as another outspoken UFC trash talker is ready to get the smack talk rolling for him.

McGregor has eschewed appearing in the limelight in order to focus on training for a fight many think will be his toughest ever. The UFC is reportedly a bit miffed with McGregor’s lack of promotion for the fight.

One prominent UFC name believes there is another reason for his media silence.

“Chaos” Sounds Off Again

Former UFC interim champion Colby Covington recently told BJ Penn Radio (via MMA Mania) that McGregor has gone soft and is doing cocaine and partying with hookers instead of training:

“He’s doing his little cocaine, and he’s partying a lot with his hookers. He’s getting a little soft, he’s a little, he’s a coked-up little leprechaun who’s getting a little soft, so I completely understand why he doesn’t want to do promotion.”

Covington defeated former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos by unanimous decision at June’s UFC 225. He was offered a fight against champion Tyron Woodley. Covington cited a recent sinus surgery as the reason he couldn’t participate in the biggest fight of his career so far.

Woodley went on to dominate Darren Till at September 8’s UFC 228. The consensus is that he and Covington will eventually face off for the title soon. McGregor has his hands full with Nurmagomedov, meanwhile. The Irish superstar will finally appear opposite his Dagestani rival at a press conference this Thursday.

The MMA world expects the trash talk to get rolling at that date and time. The fight has received precious little mainstream promotion despite its billing as the biggest UFC match of all-time. McGregor has been out of action since defeating Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title in late 2016.

The 155-pound title was stripped from McGregor due to inactivity. McGregor will attempt to win back the belt he never officially lost against ‘The Eagle.’

Joanna Jedrzejczyk Blasts Nicco Montano’s ‘Bulls**t’ Behavior As Champion

Earlier this month (Sat., September 8, 2018), UFC 228 lost one of its most important bouts for the pay-per-view event from American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

It all went down at weigh-ins the day before the card when former women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano was forced out her first scheduled title defense in the co-main event. Montano had not yet set foot into the Octagon since capturing the title as an unlikely winner on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 27 last December.

Because of the repeated issues with getting her into the octagon, the UFC made the call to strip Montano of her belt relatively quickly after she missed weighing in before UFC 228. Not many have come to her side in the time since, and one former champion who has been in a similar circumstance is one of them.

Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk recently likened Montano’s miss at this weekend’s (Sat., September 15, 2018) UFC Moscow (via MMA Mania) to her own bad weight cut prior to her losing the title against Rose Namajunas at UFC 217 last year. It isn’t easy, but the former ‘Joanna Champion’ said the UFC was right to strip Montano because of what she did:

”Man, I paid the ultimate price, but I was on weight in November 2017,” she told media at UFC Fight Night Moscow. “I would do this the same because for me it’s a shame, us as fighters, athletes and champions to not be on weight.

”We need real and dedicated fighters and champions in the UFC. The UFC is the best organization in the world. There’s no space and time for bullsh**t like this. It was a very hard decision, very tough decision. I believe she is not happy but you must take this job very serious and you must be 100 percent in. Weight cuts are not easy, are not nice. But it’s part of our job and you shouldn’t complain and you must be on weight when you have to be.”

Now that women’s flyweight no longer has a champion, top-ranked Shevchenko is thought of as the uncrowned champion – something she was often called even before Montano missed weight.

It’s recently been rumored that Shevchenko will meet Jedrzejczyk, whom she’s already beaten in Muay Thai three times, for the flyweight title when the former women’s 115-pound champion ditches the draining weight cut to strawweight.

Jedrzejczyk cautioned that fans and media members pump the brakes a little, because while she does have an offer out it’s not set in stone:

”This fight is not on,” she said. “So of course I’ve got an offer, but we’ll see. I’m very open to fight Valentina Shevchenko. I always want to fight the best fighters, and definitely she is one of the top female fighters in the world.”

With a scene that can only be described as a mess at women’s flyweight, Shevchenko vs. Jedrzejczyk can only be described as by far the best fight the UFC has to offer in the weight class.

Shevchenko has seen two champions back out of fighting her at the last minute in just over a year, so they’d be best served to get it signed as soon as possible.

Welterweight king Tyron Woodley is a dominant UFC champ, but can “The Chosen One” find success in the rap game?

After Woodley retained his title at UFC 228 with an easy win over Liverpool’s Darren Till he took to the FS1 post-show to announce his new rap single would dropping soon.

That time is now. Woodley’s single entitled “I’ll Beat Yo’ ***” featuring 10 time Grammy nominee Wiz Khalifa drops on all platforms today. The champ also worked with a number of other established hip-hop artists throughout the production of his album.

Woodley is well aware of the athlete rapper connection/crossover as he told TMZ Sports. Regardless, when your one of the pound for pound best fighters in the world you do what you want to do.

“Timing is everything in music, Woodley explained. “And what better time to release a single called ‘I’ll Beat Yo’ ***’ – fresh off of whoopin’ some ***?”

Stephen Thompson Calls Out Colby Covington For Poor McGregor Impression

Stephen Thompson sounds like he wouldn’t mind getting into the cage against Colby Covington.

Last weekend (Sat. September 8, 2018) UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley successfully defended his title against Darren Till.

Woodley knocked the Englishman down in the second round before locking in a D’arce and forcing him to tap. After the bout, the welterweight division came out in full force, trying to shoot their shot for the next 170-pound title opportunity.

One notable name who took to Twitter was Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Thompson has only won one of his past four fights. Despite this, Thompson said he and Woodley have unfinished business to attend to. “Wonderboy” and Woodley have fought two times before.

Their initial bout ended in a Majority Draw, while Woodley won a Majority Decision in the rematch:

“Great fight, well done .  I fought both guys, and I’m down to fight both again!  T-Wood, we got unfinished business!”

Shortly after, Colby Covington responded to Thompson’s Tweet, saying to get to the “back of the line”:

“Oh shut the hell up you virgin! You’re at the back of the line choirboy.”

Thompson was recently interviewed by Fightful’s James Lynch and responded to Covington’s comments. “Wonderboy” said it made him chuckle a little bit:

“I did see it, you know what, it kind of made me chuckle a little bit. The stuff that comes out that guys mouth, it’s funny, but at the same time, the dude’s trying way too hard.”

Thompson then said Covington is trying to poorly impersonate Conor McGregor. Because Covington uses his trash-talk to get big fights, Thompson seems confident “Chaos” will get the next welterweight title shot:

“He’s trying to be a Conor McGregor and he’s just not him, he’s not doing a very good job of it. People love to hate this guy, that’s the kind of character he is. Nobody likes him, but it gets him fights, and I think he will be getting that title shot next.”

Usman Thinks Dana White Could Change His Mind About Covington’s Title Shot

Kamaru Usman thinks he can get in on the welterweight title mix before Colby Covington.

The post Usman Thinks Dana White Could Change His Mind About Covington’s Title Shot appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Kamaru Usman is certain he’ll become UFC welterweight champion one day.

Usman served as the backup fighter for the UFC 228 main event in Dallas, Texas last weekend. Tyron Woodley successfully defended his 170-pound championship against Darren Till with a submission win.

Speaking to MMA Junkie after the event, Usman remained firm in his belief that he’ll win the gold one day:

“I will be champion,” Usman said.

Now that Till has had his chance at the welterweight crown, that opens up the door for young and impressive prospects such as Usman to get their shot. After the event, UFC President Dana White noted that Colby Covington will receive the next shot.

Not only do Covington and Woodley have personal issues with one another, but “Chaos” did win the interim 170-pound title earlier this summer. Covington, however, was unable to unify at UFC 228 because of an injury.

As for White saying Covington is next, Usman isn’t too worried about that right now. He believes there’s a chance White can change his mind about who gets the next title opportunity:

“I’m not dwelling solely on what Dana said yesterday, because tomorrow Dana could change his mind,” Usman said.

Even though Covington’s next fight may be for the welterweight title, Usman is still patiently awaiting a crack at the American Top Team (ATT) product. He really wants the chance at putting hands through Covington’s face:

“I truly want to put my hands through his face,” Usman said. “That’s a guy that the world will be watching as well.”
