UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman recently underwent knee surgery following his title victory over Tyron Woodley.

Usman made the announcement on his Instagram live story. The operation took place in Philadelphia, but it’s unknown as to what exactly the injury was that needed repairing (via MMA Junkie):

“I had knee surgery before, I thought this was going to be like that,” Usman said. “This ain’t that at all – at all. This (expletive) different.”

Usman revealed after his title win over Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 that he suffered a fractured foot shortly before the bout. He also mentioned that he plans on being an active UFC champion.

This surgery seems to be the first step in backing up that point. Now that he’ll be able to open up his arsenal following knee surgery, “The Nigerian Nightmare” says he’ll be “much more dangerous”:

“I’ve been on one leg for years now,” Usman said. “So to be able to open up and use my kicks will make me so much more dangerous, it wouldn’t even be fair once I start to use some of the weapons we work on.

“Once I go into these fights, and we have to go through the ringer to prepare for them, and we know I’m not 100 percent going in, winning is the most important thing and dominating is the most important thing, and that’s what we’ve been doing.”

Shortly after his title win, it was announced by UFC President Dana White that Colby Covington would be the man up next to challenge for the 170-pound crown. Covington and Usman have had their fair share of issues in recent weeks. Usman said he looks forward to making his first title defense against “you know who.”

Despite not being on the card, Colby Covington was one of the bigger stories coming out of UFC 235.

“Chaos” was in attendance for the co-main event between Kamaru Usman and Tyron Woodley for the welterweight title. When it was all said and done, Usman won the title via unanimous decision. Shortly after the fight, Usman and his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, ran into Covington at a Las Vegas hotel buffet.

A scuffle ensued, largely instigated by Abdelaziz. Speaking to Bloody Elbow recently, Covington blasted the mixed martial arts (MMA) manager for his actions:

“MMA managers are meant to be behind the scenes,” Covington said. “They’re not meant to be up in fighters’ faces acting like they’re tough. He was up in my face, ‘Let’s fight, let’s take this outside.’ I’m like, ‘Dude, you’re not even a fighter. I’ll dust you in a second.

“You’re conducting yourself like a little kid. You’re a manager, you’re supposed to be representing your fighters, and this is how you represent your fighters? You go out there and put innocent people and children in harm’s way? He’s a circus.

“That guy is a low life, trying to jump me in the Palms buffet. Ali’s a little scumbag. He’s a piece of sh-t. … He needs to get deported back to whatever country he snitched on. I would have pressed charges, but I don’t want Snoozeman to get deported back to Nigeria before I get to whoop his ass in the Octagon.”

Covington and Abdelaziz likely haven’t seen the last of one another. “Chaos” has been named the next challenger for the welterweight title. Soon, he and Usman will be matched up with the 170-pound title on the line, and Abdelaziz will definitely be alongside his client.

One of the fastest-rising stars in the UFC at the moment is light heavyweight knockout artist Johnny Walker.

Walker comes off back-to-back knockout victories coming in at just under a minute. The latter came against proven veteran and top-ranked Misha Cirkunov. Now, Walker is ready to prove himself against the division’s elite, calling out the likes of three-time title challenger Alexander Gustafsson.

If Walker is able to topple the likes of Gustafsson, Anthony Smith, and others, he might be on his way to a match-up against division king Jon Jones. Speaking to The Mac Life recently, “Bones” revealed he’s “very aware” of what the young Brazilian is doing in the division at the moment:

“Johnny Walker is somebody that I’m very aware of,” Jones said. “I know I’m gonna be fighting him sooner or later. I just appreciate his energy. He seems like a nice guy, he just radiates his happiness and his positivity, and it’s refreshing.

“He seems like the type of guy I’d go out and have a beer with. He’s cool. He seems cool… until we fight. And then after I beat him, he’ll be cool again.”

While Walker might take a while to reach a title opportunity, Jones has no shortage of challengers. Thiago Santos is believed to be the next man up to challenge for Jones’ 205-pound throne.

“Bones” is coming off a successful title defense at UFC 235 weekend (Sat. March 2, 2019). He defeated Anthony Smith in the main event of UFC 235 via unanimous decision.
