Longtime mixed martial arts (MMA) referee Herb Dean came under fire last month for his stoppage of Ben Askren vs. Robbie Lawler at UFC 235.

After initially acknowledging that the fight was prematurely stopped, Dean is now defending his decision to stop the action. Speaking on “The Joe Rogan Experience MMA Show” recently, Dean explained why he made the decision to stop the fight (via Bloody Elbow):

“When I see some chokes, a rear-naked choke, especially with the guy on the back face up, I take a sigh of relief,” Dean said. “My job just got so much easier. It’s not like he’s gonna go out and in a second, take some extreme amount of damage.

“He may go out, I’ll have a second to make sure – not even a second – a half a breath, to make sure he’s OK. And then let it go out and he’s not gonna take any other damage. A bulldog choke – anytime you have a choke where there’s pressure on the neck and to see the spine backwards like that, that’s a rough situation for me.”

Precarious Position

Dean continued that he couldn’t know for sure that a fighter was holding their own neck up. In that case, he believes he should do what he did, and that’s stop the fight.

“So I see someone go limp, and I know that on top of it, they’re no longer putting tension on their neck, and their neck is just being bent, I can’t see that I should do something different than that. With that same situation with the arm going limp with that type of a choke on someone, I would think the arm should be doing something else. At this time, I don’t think that I should do something different.”

Lawler looked like he was going to run away with a quick first-round knockout win. However, Askren was able to regain his composure and get a dominant position on the ground. After he locked in the bulldog choke, Dean called the fight off.

However, once the fight was over, Lawler shot up to his feet and began to protest the finish. Everyone watching thought Lawler had gone unconscious due to his arm going limp. Yet that didn’t turn out to be the case.

A rematch was discussed, namely by Dana White. Ultimately, the UFC decided to grant Askren his wish to fight Jorge Masvidal instead.

Some more footage has surfaced from UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, Ali Abdelaziz, and Colby Covington’s casino melee last month.

The incident took place after UFC 235, in which Usman won the 170-pound strap from Tyron Woodley with a lopsided unanimous decision. Former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington was in attendance all fight week. His constant antics were in attempt to get under the skin of both Woodley and Usman – he succeeded.

On the day after the fight, Usman and Ali confronted Covington in a casino buffet line. A scuffle nearly broke out before the pair were separated. TMZ Sports has released some new footage from the incident. In the beginning, Usman can be seen attempting to calm Abdelaziz down and prevent him from going over to confront “Chaos.”

Instead, Abdelaziz proceeds on, sparking the incident which nearly got physical several times. Check out the video here:

Covington likely hasn’t seen the last of Usman and Abdelaziz. UFC President Dana White has said that Covington will be the next challenger for Usman’s title. Once their bout is made official, things will really begin to get interesting.

UFC bantamweight competitor Pedro Munhoz will remain temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Munhoz was issued a temporary suspension for his UFC 235 celebration. He jumped the Octagon fence after knocking out ex-135-pound champion Cody Garbrandt. Both Munhoz and Garbrandt took home an extra $50,000 for their “Fight Of The Night”-winning performances.

Today (Wed. March 27, 2019), the NSAC voted unanimously to extend Munhoz’s temporary celebration until he goes before the commission. He is being accused of ignoring the commission’s instructions to stay off the Octagon fence and remain in the cage after his win.

NSAC Executive Director Bob Bennett spoke to MMA Fighting and noted that the rule is in place to protect the fighters from injury, as well as from possibly harming others:

“Our inspectors were specifically advised by me to make sure the fighters knew they were not authorized to jump out of the cage,” Bennett said.

It was also noted that the punishment has nothing to do with the infamous incident between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor’s team at October’s UFC 229.

Santiago Ponzinibbio is looking for a big fight for his Octagon return.

And rightfully so. The Argentinian is on a seven-fight win streak with four wins coming by way of knockout. In his last outing, Ponzinibbio rendered Neil Magny unconscious with his punching power. Now, he has his eyes focused on the welterweight division’s elite.

For the past several months, Ponzinibbio has been calling out former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos. Unfortunately, those challenges seem to have fallen on deaf ears. Speaking to MMA Fighting, Ponzinibbio has a new name on his tongue. It’s former 170-pound king Tyron Woodley:

“The reality is, dos Anjos said in the media that he wanted this fight, but he doesn’t,” Ponzinibbis said. “He doesn’t want this fight. He never asked for it in the U.S., never made any noise to make it happen. He asked for it in Brazil so he wouldn’t look like a p****, but the truth is he doesn’t want to fight me.

“I need to fight, man. This is one of the best moments of my career, I’m ready to become world champion and I don’t want to stay inactive. Since dos Anjos really doesn’t want to fight me, I think Tyron Woodley is a great fight. I’ve showed time and time again I’m ready to become champion.”

This fight makes perfect sense for both men at this point in their careers. Ponzinibbio is looking to get a big win that will undoubtably name him the next contender for the 170-pound strap. Who better than the recently dethroned welterweight king? As for Woodley, he would like to get a rematch with Kamaru Usman for the title.

Usman will likely be facing Colby Covington in his next outing, but a win over a rising contender in Ponzinibbio should all but guarantee Woodley a second run at “The Nigerian Nightmare.”
