Paulo Costa is seemingly daring USADA to come knocking at his door. Of course, it’s not like they haven’t already. The hulking middleweight contender was embroiled in a long, confusing case with the UFC’s anti-doping partner last year. It wasn’t for anabolic steroids, however. Despite the fact that “Borrachinha” is routinely accused of using the […]
Jorge Masvidal is really taking advantage of the publicity he has garnered after picking up the fastest knockout in UFC history. Speaking on “The Dan LeBatard Show” earlier today (Thurs. Speaking on “The Dan LeBatard Show” earlier today (Thurs. July 11, 2019), Masvidal noted that a fight with UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman definitely interests him. However, “Gamebred” also took the opportunity to call out former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor.
Masvidal said he wants to break the Irishman’s face for an “easy paycheck” (via MMA Fighting):
“Definitely the title, definitely Kamaru Usman interests me. He’s got the title and that’s what I want but he’s always having injuries and things are happening,” Masvidal said. “Another guy that interests me because it’s just a fight that if we made it, it’s going to sell a lot and I’m going to get the money that I deserve and you can see you put me in there in a fight and I’m going to fight.
“I’m going to give you what the fans. I’ve never pulled out of a fight. I want [Conor] McGregor. I want to break his face. I think that’s an easy paycheck. He’s got these cash symbols written all over his face for me. I just don’t see it going his way if I’m honest with you.”
The last time McGregor fought inside the Octagon was this past October. He was submitted in the fourth round by Khabib Nurmagomedov via neck crank at UFC 229. “The Notorious” has only lost twice in the UFC. Both of those defeats coming by way of submission.
Masvidal pointed out that McGregor “backs down” and taps, while he himself doesn’t have an ounce of quit in him:
“He backs down. He taps. I’ve never tapped in my whole entire career,” Masvidal said. “He’s tapped a couple times so that’s backing down in my book. It’s something I’ve never done and I feel like I’d break him. It would be an easy fight. It just means more money, more fans and then fight for the title. Either one of them makes sense to me.”
McGregor is one of the best mental warfare strategists combat sports has ever seen. A fight against McGregor means the trash talk isn’t too far behind, and he’s willing to get personal to the point of making things uncomfortable. However, Masvidal maintains the Irishman won’t be able to get into his head:
“There’s no agitating me,” Masvidal said. “It’s just you’re corny, you’re non-stop talking, whatever, you’re going to get a little bit extra punished.”
Masvidal doesn’t think that any other fight makes sense for him aside from matchups against Usman or McGregor. But the Floridian understands a fight with McGregor is what will really break the bank:
“I think either/or, equal out to big, big checks so I’m happy with either/or,” Masvidal said. “I think Conor’s a bigger check so I wouldn’t mind Conor. I want to put money away in the bank.”
What do you think about a potential matchup between Masvidal and McGregor?
It’s no secret that Anthony Smith and Luke Rockhold despise each other. It’s no secret that Anthony Smith and Luke Rockhold despise each other. So imagine the satisfaction “Lionheart” felt seeing Rockhold get knocked out by Jan Blachowicz at UFC 239 this past weekend (Sat. July 6, 2019).
The former middleweight champion took on Blachowicz in his debut at 205 pounds. Heading into the bout, Rockhold seemed very confident he would dominate his way to a championship bout against Jon Jones. However, Rockhold was stunned early in round one, and his Polish adversary was able to finish him off in the second round in devastating fashion.
Smith was recently interviewed by Submission Radio to get his thoughts on Rockhold’s loss. Despite Rockhold suffering a loss, furthering himself from Smith in the rankings and lessening any chance of them fighting next, “Lionheart” admits he’d still like to “slap the sh*t” out of the Californian:
“Yeah, Luke Rockhold still remains someone that I would love to slap the shit out of. He’s just not a good dude. We know some mutual people and I’ve heard nothing but awful things about him, and I’ve heard nothing but awful things about me come out of his mouth. So, that’s not how I was raised, that’s not how we do it here in the Midwest, in the small town of Nebraska.
“You talk shit, you get hit, and that’s how it goes. But I’m also an adult, so I understand that that’s not exactly how things go all the time. But I would have loved to have been the one to do that to him. On the flipside, it’s kind of a ‘serves you right bitch’ moment. Talk all that shit. You couldn’t beg your way into a fight with me right now. You know, coming off a win, even then the UFC didn’t like it.
“I was already waiting for that fight, and as soon as Rockhold got that win, we were gonna go into those negotiations and figure out where and when, and the UFC didn’t even like it. They didn’t like the fact that I was gonna fight a guy that wasn’t even ranked and may or may not be coming off a win over B?achowicz in his first fight. UFC didn’t even like that shit.
“My family didn’t like it, my manager didn’t like it. I just wanted it. Sometimes you just gotta do something you really want to do, not that you have to do. And sometimes it doesn’t always have to make sense. So, it would have been nice to fight him, but at the same time, I know he’s sitting at home feeling really god damn stupid. At least as far as when it comes to him and I, I know he feels really stupid and he regrets saying all that shit.”
It remains to be seen what’s next for Rockhold. UFC President Dana White suggests the former 185-pound champ should consider retirement. As for Smith, he comes off a submission victory over Alexander Gustafsson, and is likely one more big win away from a title shot.
What do you think about the beef between Smith and Rockhold?

The welterweight division is possibly the most interesting within the UFC at the moment.
Currently, Kamaru Usman reigns as the division’s champion, but is sidelined with an injury for the time being. Meanwhile, Colby Covington has been parading around as the self-proclaimed champion of the division, sporting the interim title he has since been officially stripped of.
Despite being expected to be Usman’s first challenger, Covington will instead face off against former American Top Team teammate Robbie Lawler. “Chaos” seems to take issue with the way “Ruthless” left the team and is looking for payback. Another one of Covington’s teammates, Jorge Masvidal, is doing very well for himself within the division as well.
“Gamebred” comes off a first-round knockout victory over Ben Askren at UFC 239. The knockout marks the fastest in UFC history, as he starched “Funky” in just five seconds with a flying knee. At this pace, should Covington get past Lawler, Masvidal and Covington could very well find themselves matched up against one another down the road.
Both Covington and Masvidal are very good friends and came up together within American Top Team. Speaking to “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” this week, Covington discussed what it would be like having to fight against one of his best friends:
“Yeah, we would dread it, Ariel,” Covington said. “But lets be honest, we’ve been beating each other up and fighting each other for the past eight years at American Top Team. So to go out there and get a seven-figure paycheck for the both of us and set ourselves up for the rest of our lives, it wouldn’t be a big deal.
“We’re fighters at heart and that’s what we love to do. So, fighters fight, man. There’s only one man in this business, and that’s what we’re in this to do, to be that one man, to be at the top of the mountain. To have this [shows UFC title]. So whoever wants to come get this, come get it, boy. I take on all comers.”
Covington then explained how ATT would handle such a situation, suggesting they’d come into the gym at separate times and delegate the handling of the situation to coach Dan Lambert:
“Yeah, it won’t be an issue,” Covington said. “We’ll come in on separate times, Dan Lambert will handle it accordingly. He’ll make sure we have our training partners and our training coaches on separate times in the gym and we’ll space it out so we don’t have to be and see each other before the fight.”
Who do you think wins a matchup between Masvidal and Covington? Do you think a potential fight will affect their friendship?
