Jorge Masvidal confirms retirement from MMA loss to Gilbert Burns UFC 287 Highlights

Gilbert Burns scored one of the biggest wins of his career on Saturday night in the co-main event of UFC 287.

Emanating from Miami-Dade Arena, the crowd was firmly behind Burns’ opponent Jorge Masvidal, but it wasn’t enough to bring him back into the win column against the No. 5 ranked welterweight contender.

Both fighters took a very measured approach in the early going with Jorge Masvidal working the calf kick. Burns also remained cautious, respecting Masvidal’s power. As we got to the four-minute mark, both fighters began to let their fists fly with Burns landing a solid right hand. Burns followed that up with a lightning-quick late-round takedown and dropped a series of hammer fists as the first-round bell sounded.

In the opening seconds of the second round, Burns landed a left hand that sat Masvidal down. ‘Gamebred’ quickly got back to his feet, but found himself pulled off the ground and slammed to the ground with Burns sitting comfortably in top position. Masvidal was able to work his way back up and separate with 30 seconds to go, but by then there was not much he could do to swing the round in his favor.

Gilbert Burns came out in the third taking his time, but by the two-minute mark, he began throwing heavy leather and caught Masvidal clean with a big right hand. Burns delivered a three-punch combo that backed Masivdal to the fence. Gamebred’ encouraged Burns to keep coming forward, but Burns refused to take the bait and instead initiated a clinch with 90 seconds to go. Burns managed to get Masvidal to the mat and was able to keep him there through the end of the contest.

Official Result: Gilbert Burns def. Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Returning to the winner’s enclosure for the first time since a May 2021 win over former undisputed bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt, perennial bantamweight contender, Rob Font turns in a brutal first round knockout win over top-15 contender, Adrian Yanez on the main card of UFC 287 in Miami, Florida.

Ront, a staple of the New England Cartel, had been sidelined since suffering a decision loss against recent UFC San Diego headliner, Marlon Vera — which came off the back of a decision loss to former undisputed featherweight champion, Jose Aldo.

The Massachusetts native managed to return to winning-ways tonight, however, and in quite spectacular fashion. Engaging in a back-and-forth firefight, eventually making space and dropping the streaking Yanez with a right hand, dropping the latter.

Immediately following Yanez to the ground, Font managed to land a slew of ground strikes, taking out Yanez in the opening round with a stunning TKO victory.

Kevin Holland got back into the win column in a big way on Saturday night during the UFC 287 main card.

Emanating from Miami-Dade Arena, Kevin Holland delivered another memorable performance that ended with him scoring a highlight-reel-worthy knockout of his Argentinian opponent, Santiago Ponzinibbio. Throughout the first two rounds, Holland took a much more measured approach, opting to utilize his length and reach advantage. To combat that, Ponzinibbio brilliantly attacked the lead leg of Holland in an effort to disrupt his movement.

The strategy worked well for Ponzinibbio throughout the first 13 minutes of the contest. With less than two minutes to go in the bout, Ponzinibbio threw another calf kick that was caught by Holland. Taking his opponent off balance, Holland uncorked a massive left hand that caught Ponzinibbio clean and immediately rendered him unconscious. Before he could do any further damage, the referee stepped in, calling for the stoppage.

Ponzinibbio protested the stoppage, but the replay clearly showed that his lights were out as he crashed face-first to the canvas.

Official Result: Kevin Holland def. Santiago Ponzinibbio via KO (strikes) at 3:16 of Round 3

Christian Rodriguez upsets Raul Rosas Jr at UFC 287

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, April 8, 2023, for UFC 287, going down live from the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida.

Headlining the event is a middleweight championship bout showcasing newly crowned champion Alex Pereira and former champion Israel Adesanya, an immediate rematch from their UFC 281 clash back in November of last year.

Co-headlining is a welterweight bout between a pair of former title challengers in Gilbert Burns and Jorge Masvidal.

Then opening up the main card tonight at UFC 287 was a bantamweight encounter between 18-year-old stud Raul Rosas Jr and Christian Rodriguez.

Rosas came into the bout with a perfect record of 7-0 (1 knockout, 5 submissions), having gone 1-0 thus far into his short UFC tenure. Rodriguez on the other hand came in with a record of 8-1 (3 knockout, 4 submission), having gone 1-1 thus far in the promotion.

Continue reading to see how this 135 lb affair went down:

Rosas came out guns blazing in round one, attempting takedown after takedown once the bout begins. On his fourth attempt, Rosas gets Rodriguez to the mat and he’s right into side control. However, he gets into position to go for a guillotine choke and goes for it, ending up on his back.

Rosas doesn’t accept bottom position though and they’re back to their feet, where Rosas eventually jumps onto Rodriguez’ back and searches for the rear naked choke finish during the final two minutes of the opening stretch.

Round two was a much, much different story, as Rodriguez began to break Rosas, who expended an absurd amount of energy through the first five minutes. Rodriguez is able to stuff Rosas’ takedown attempts and ends up on top, where he spends most of his time on Rosas’ back, as well as in mount.

Round three was quite similar to round two, though Rosas didn’t shoot on a takedown immediately when the round began. Instead, he tried to strike with Rodriguez, but was getting boxed up badly so he was forced to shoot, where he ended up on bottom again with Rodriguez reigning down vicious punches and elbows onto him.

Christian Rodriguez def. Raul Rosas Jr via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Jamahal Hill predicts easy win over Alex Pereira UFC 287 I'm going dominate him

In the wake of rumors linking incoming UFC 287 headliner, Alex Pereira with a future move to the light heavyweight limit – 205lbs kingpin, Jamahal Hill claims he would “dominate” his middleweight champion counterpart if they share the Octagon in the future.

Taking main event honors at UFC 287 tonight in Miami, Florida, Sao Paulo knockout artist, Pereira attempts to secure the first successful defense of his middleweight crown, taking on former champion and bitter enemy, Israel Adesanya in a championship rematch.

Headlining UFC 281 back in November of last year, Pereira minted himself as the king of the middleweights with a stunning, rallying fifth round finish of former kickboxing rival, Adesanya, handing the Nigerian-Kiwi a standing TKO loss.

As for Jamahal Hill, the Dana White’s Contender Series alum clinched the vacant light heavyweight title against Pereira’s teammate, former titleholder, Glover Teixeira in the main event of UFC 283 back in January in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Turning in an impressive and one-sided unanimous decision victory, Hill has been linked with a title defense against former champion, Jiri Prochazka for an event in the summer.

However, in the immediate aftermath of Hill’s championship coronation, Pereira, a former light heavyweight champion under the banner of GLORY Kickboxing, was linked with a potential move to tackle the Illinois native.

Jamahal Hill welcomes future fight with fellow champion, Alex Pereira

And welcoming a potential future fight with Pereira ahead of the Brazilian’s return in the ‘Sunshine State’ tonight, Hill claimed he would “dominate” the former should they tangle.

“Come on in,” Jamahal Hill said of a fight with Alex Pereira during an interview with Inside Fighting. “I’m here for everybody. Just put a dish on the plate so I could eat. [It would be a] dominant victory for me – dominant. I’m going to dominate him.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie

Riding a four-fight winning run, prior to his championship win over Teixeira, Hill turned back the trio of Jimmy Crute, Johnny Walker, and former title challenger, Thiago Santos in successive knockout victories.

Jorge Masvidal earns title shot with UFC 287 win over Gilbert Burns Dana White

UFC president, Dana White has confirmed that former two-time welterweight title challenger, Jorge Masvidal would earn a shot at welterweight gold should he defeat Gilbert Burns on home soil this weekend at UFC 287 – claiming he would be interested in booking the Floridian against current titleholder, Leon Edwards.

Attempting to snap a three-fight losing skid this weekend in Miami, the current #11 ranked welterweight contender, Masvidal has been sidelined since March of last year at UFC 272 – dropping a one-sided unanimous decision win to former interim champion, Colby Covington.

And ahead of UFC 287, the American Top Team mainstay claimed that he would be fighting Edwards for the championship before Covington, if he manages to defeat Brazilian contender, Burns this weekend.

However, according to reports this month, the UFC are working on an undisputed welterweight title fight between Edwards and Covington to take main event honors at UFC 291 in July – in a potential return to the UK for the organization.

Dana White lays out path to title shot for UFC veteran, Jorge Masvidal

White, has also, however, claimed that should Masvidal defeat the perennial challenger, Burns at UFC 287, and Edwards successfully defends his title against Covington – the winning parties would likely find themselves on a collision course.

“Let me tell you what’s going to happen, if he (Jorge Masvidal) goes in against a guy like Gilbert Burns, whom I have a ton of respect for. Gilbert Burns is an absolute badass,” Dana White told TMZ Sports during a recent interview.

“Then you have Colby Covington versus Leon Edwards,” Dana White explained. “And if Leon Edwards beats Colby Covington, the history between Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal, and they both win these fights, that fight will be so huge. People would be dying to see that fight. It would be absolutely massive, and maybe we do it back in Miami.”

Initially booked to settle their differences at UFC 269 back in December of 2021, Masvidal withdrew from the their welterweight grudge match due to an undisclosed injury.
