Colby Covington doesn’t believe former friend-turned-rival Jorge Masvidal will achieve any more success in the UFC after their five-round fight in March 2022.

In an interview with Michael Bisping, Covington said his win over Masvidal changed his rival’s fighting career and his personal life.

“Jorge [Masvidal] is a broken man. He’s not the same fighter after I destroyed him, beat him 50-44 with a soda. Obviously he’s had an emotional letdown,” Covington said. “His life is unravelling…You could tell he’s just not the same person.”

Masvidal is scheduled to face Gilbert Burns on April 8 in Miami, Florida at UFC 287. After losing three-straight bouts, Masvidal is looking to turn things around with the goal of fighting for the UFC welterweight title in the future.

Colby Covington Doesn’t Believe in a Jorge Masvidal Turnaround

Covington, a 35-year-old, two-time title challenger, believes Masvidal’s recent struggles will continue.

“I just see [Gilbert Burns] getting an easy win,” Covington said. “Gilbert’s a nice guy, family guy. He’s not Colby Covington, so he’s not going to get a title shot off of beating Street Judas.”

The No. 2 ranked welterweight last fought at UFC 272, where he defeated Masvidal by unanimous decision. At UFC 286, “Chaos” was an alternate for the welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman.

If when he didn’t get the chance to fight, Covington was in attendance at the O2 Arena where Edwards successfully defended the welterweight throne. He believes he should be the next title challenger against the first Jamaican-born UFC champion.

The 170-pounder has been involved in a legal matter with Masvidal, stemming from a physical altercation last year in Miami. Masvidal believes he’ll get another shot to fight Covington before he retires from mixed martial arts.

The rivalry between the two former friends doesn’t seem to have an end.

Former undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya has replied to his former opponent and division rival, Paulo Costa on social media overnight – reminding the Brazilian of their 2020 title showdown in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Adesanya, a former undisputed UFC middleweight champion and the current #1 ranked division challenger, returns to the Octagon next weekend atop a UFC 287 pay-per-view card in Miami, Florida.

Taking headlining honors, Adesanya rematches recently minted division best, Alex Pereira in an undisputed title fight – having dropped the crown to the Brazilian back in November at Madison Square Garden in a fifth round standing TKO loss.

As for Costa, the Belo Horizonte native recently confirmed he had agreed terms on a new, four-fight deal with the Dana White-led organization, with his representative touting the Brazilian as the best-paid fighter from the region as a result of his new contract

Paulo Costa pokes fun of Israel Adesanya on social media

Poking at Nigerian-Kiwi striker, Adesanya on social media ahead of his championship rematch with Pereira next month, Costa joked that the former champion had been forced to withdraw from his title rematch at UFC 287.

“Breaking NEWS!” Paulo Costa tweeted. “(Israel) Adesanya is out [of] UFC 287! #Injured.”

In response to the Brazilian, Adesanya forced the #5 ranked challenger to reflect on their 2020 title fight on ‘Fight Island’ – where Costa suffered his first professional loss in mixed martial arts, courtesy of a second round TKO.

“Lol, my cl*t would be bigger than your d*ck,” Israel Adesanya tweeted. “You remember…”

Returning to the winner’s enclosure back in August of last year on the main card of UFC 278, Costa managed to defeat former middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold in a unanimous decision triumph in Salt Lake City.

Video – Alex Pereira trains with Chuck Liddell ahead of UFC 287 title defense

Alex Pereira

Alex Pereira is getting some help from a UFC legend before his first title defense next month.

Five months removed from his shocking fifth-round knockout of Israel Adesanya at UFC 281, Pereira will return to the Octagon to defend his middleweight championship for the first time against the man he took it from. Pereira is already in the process of cutting weight for the April 8 matchup and now appears to be getting some last-minute help from UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell.

In a video clip uploaded by ESPN MMA on Twitter, ‘The Iceman’ can be seen giving tips to Pereira and his training partner.

If you’re looking to get tips on how to improve your standup skills, there are few better than Chuck Liddell. ‘The Iceman’ became one of the promotion’s hottest acts during the 2000s, capturing the light heavyweight championship and successfully defending it four times in less than two years’ time. Throughout his storied career, Liddell scored victories over other MMA icons including Vitor Belfort, Renato Sobral, Alistair Overeem, Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture, and Wanderlei Silva.

UFC 287 Will Likely Be Israel Adesanya’s Last Chance to Earn a Win Against Alex Pereira

Alex Pereira will attempt to take the tools he learns from Chuck Liddell and parlay them into his fourth career victory over Israel Adesanya. The two had previously met under the GLORY Kickboxing banner with ‘Poatan’ earning two victories, including a brutal third-round knockout of ‘The Last Stylebender’ at GLORY Heroes 15.

After transitioning to full-time MMA in 2017, Adesanya thought he had seen the last of Alex Pereira. Fast forward five years later to UFC 281 when ‘Stylebender’ once again found himself face-to-face with the heavy-hitting Brazilian. And like their previous two meetings, things did not go Adesanya’s way.

UFC 287 on April 8 will likely be Israel Adesanya’s final chance to earn that ever-elusive win over Alex Pereira, recapturing the middleweight crown in the process.

Jorge Masvidal scoffs Khamzat Chimaev miss weight call for UFC title shot

Former two-time UFC welterweight title challenger, Jorge Masvidal has hit out at the undefeated division challenger, Khamzat Chimaev, criticizing the Chechen-born contender for calling for a title siege, off the back of a seven and a half pound weight miss in his last fight.

Masvidal, the #11 ranked welterweight contender, has been sidelined since March of last year, most recently headlining UFC 272 in a grudge match against former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington – suffering a one-sided unanimous decision loss.

As for Chimaev, the AllStars MMA staple improved to 12-0 as a professional in his most recent Octagon walk – maintaining his #3 rank in the weight class after a submission win over Kevin Holland.

Initially scheduled to headline UFC 279 last September against Nate Diaz, Chimaev forced the bout’s cancellation after missing weight by a staggering seven and a half pounds for the fight, resulting in a catchweight co-main event bout with Holland.

Expected to make his return to the middleweight division for his next Octagon walk as per UFC president, Dana White, Chimaev has been blasted by Florida veteran, Masvidal for calling his shot at promotional gold.

“You miss weight by eight and a half pounds (sic), get the f*ck  out of here,” Jorge Masvidal said of Khamzat Chimaev on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. “You’re still talking about nobody wants to fight you, go f*cking make weight before you talk about fighting. That’s the first thing. Don’t do steroids and make the f*cking weight that you agreed upon as a f*cking man. You’re going to miss by eight pounds and think it’s all cool and be calling people out? Get the f*ck out.”

“I saw him (Chimaev) do a comment that he was calling out (Alex) Pereira,” Jorge Masvidal explained. “Like, who the f*ck are you? This is a world champion and you don’t even have a f*cking win over a top-15 guy [at middleweight]. Get the f*ck out of here at 185. Go f*cking be like the rest of us, put your hard hat on, put your mouthpiece on, and get to work. You can’t miss weight by eight and a half pounds and call for title shots.”

In an interview on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Masvidal expressed his interest in a rematch with Covington before retirement.

When we get in the cage again, I’m gonna kill his a– legally,” Masvidal said. “Before my career is done, that fight happens again and I leave Colby in a hospital for a good amount of time.”

Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington Have Bad Blood

Once close friends, Masvidal and Covington are now embroiled in one of the biggest rivalries in UFC history. They were long-time teammates at American Top Team until things got personal.

The two 170-pounders were involved in a five-round fight in March 2022 at UFC 272, where Covington took home the win.

It didn’t settle their beef. A couple days later, Masvidal allegedly attacked Covington in Miami Beach. “Gamebred” has been in a legal battle ever since.

Masvidal (35-16) admitted it was an off-night against Covington at UFC 272. He said outside factors played a part in his performance.

Going into that fight, I wasn’t the best and I think it showed in many ways…He wasn’t able to put me away, hurt me [or] do anything like that,” Masvidal said. “I know with a proper training camp and putting more chips on my side, I’ll end this motherf—er.

According to UFC president Dana White, Covington, 35, is the front runner for a welterweight title fight against champion Leon Edwards.

With a win over Gilbert Burns at UFC 287, Masvidal is certain that he’ll be the rightful No. 1 contender for Edwards’ title. He believes he’s a better draw and pay-per-view star than Covington.

UFC 287 will be held at the Miami-Dade Arena in Miami, Florida on April 8.

Alex Pereira tipped to fight as high as heavyweight division UFC UFC 287

UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira will have his first title defence in just two weeks, but his coach says a change in weight class is a future possibility.

Pereira’s coach and former 205lbs champion, Glover Teixeira, went as far as stating that a move all the way up to heavyweight is a realistic option.

UFC 287 will prove to be a defining moment in Pereira’s MMA career, as he will be facing off against Israel Adesanya for the fourth time in combat sports.

Adesanya may have had his moments throughout the fight, but once again, it was Alex Pereira who had Adesanya’s number for the third time.

It began when Pereira battled ‘The Last Stylebender’ twice before the two ventured into the MMA circle.

Pereira came out victorious with a decision and a devastating knockout in a highly competitive bout.

At UFC 281, Adesanya came out ready to scrap and he not only outstruck Alex Pereira, but he hurt him badly at the end of round 1. ‘Poatan’ was forced to dig deep and with just minutes to go he showed his true power and snatched a TKO victory.

Pereira, who is rumoured to walk around much heavier than most in his weight class, is known to go through very intense weight cuts in order to make 185.

Speaking with MMA Junkie, Teixeira confirmed the adversity Alex Pereira goes through when cutting to 185, but he says it does not hinder his motivation.

“Eventually I think he’s going to want to do that because the weight cut is a big cut for him. He doesn’t complain. He just keeps going and doing it well, because he likes to be 185, and he feels good. But he can do 205 for sure and eventually it might happen because if he goes up, there are super fights, big fights. I think it’s a possibility.”

Teixeira has worked very closely with Pereira during his infant and now championship MMA career. He has become a mentor to Poatan at their gym, Teixeira MMA & Fitness, in Bethel, Connecticut.

The 35-year-old has just 8 professional MMA fights, a number frail in comparison to the 42 fights that Teixeira has been in.

Regardless of the result at UFC 287, Teixeira has made it clear that down the line Pereira will feature at a heavier weight, and it will not deter his success.

“Eventually he will. We talk about it. He can fight anywhere. Look at this guy. He can fight in any division. He can fight in Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight – he’s big.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)
