Despite being ranked higher than him in the UFC heavyweight rankings, No. 8-ranked Derrick Lewis will be looking to add key win to his resume when he takes on veteran No. 9-ranked Travis Browne in the main event of tomorrow night’s (Feb. 19, 2017) UFC Fight Night 105.

With a win, Lewis would certainly launch himself into a huge fight, but Browne plans to put a stop to the “Black Beast’s” rise, saying that the UFC will have a tough time promoting Lewis after the fight:

“You have to come out there and perform; you have to come out there and win,” Browne told MMAJunkie. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re on the poster or not. If you lose then it’s still a loss on your record. If you get caught up in the hype and all that, then you’re doing yourself a disservice. For me, it’s just about going out there and getting the win.

“The’re going to have a harder time promoting him come Sunday, whether they want to push him or not. I heard he’s trying to use me as a stepping stone or something like that. It doesn’t matter. We’re going to get into a fight. That’s all great and fine and dandy, but when it comes to Sunday the octagon door is going to close, and we’re going to be able to duke it out.”

Browne, who has lost two straight, appears to be motivated, and Lewis’ pre-fight trash talk may have added to that as well, as the “Black Beast” recently brought up Browne’s history with domestic violence. “Hapa” plans to make Lewis pay for his remarks:

“The one thing thing I did hear him talk about was very ignorant of him to even mention,” Browne said. “It is what it is. The great thing about this sport is you’re going to be held accountable for your words come fight night. I plan on doing so.”

Who do you expect to come out on top when Browne and Lewis meet?

Derrick Lewis Believes Travis Browne ‘Put His Hands’ On Ex-Girlfriend

Rising UFC heavyweight knockout artist Derrick Lewis is gearing up to take on veteran Travis Browne in the main event of this Sunday night’s (Feb. 19, 2017) UFC 105 from Halifax, Canada, and he hasn’t held back with his pre-fight banter.

The “Black Beast” has even went as far as to comment on Browne’s history with domestic violence. “Hapa” was accused of domestic violence from his ex-girlfriend in 2015, but he was eventually reinstated by the UFC after ‘inconclusive evidence’ left no proof of the accusations. Lewis, however, believes that Browne ‘put his hands’ on his ex-girlfriend:

“I believe it,” Lewis told MMAJunkie. “I believe he did put his hands on his (ex-girlfriend). But he’s looking for some motivation. I can look at that as a type of motivation as well. At the end of the day I’m not fighting to be Superman or anything like that, going Captain Save-A-You-Know-What. I’m just really doing it for the money. I’m not really going out there trying to save these women.”

While the accusations may serve as a source of motivation for Lewis, it isn’t why the fight with Browne interested him. The “Black Beast” is simply looking to move up the divisional rankings:

“I wanted to fight Travis because he’s one of the top heavyweights in the division,” Lewis said. “It’s a tough fight for me, but I still wanted that challenge. I believe fighting a top-10 guy like this is just going to bring a better fight out of myself.”

What do you make of Lewis’ comments, and are you expecting him to beat “Hapa” tomorrow night?

Fabricio Werdum Explains Why He Didn’t Rematch Junior Dos Santos

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum was scheduled to rematch Cain Velasquez at Dec. 30, 2016’s UFC 207, but Velasquez was forced to withdraw from the bout after failing to receive medical clearance from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

After Velasquez was pulled from the bout, Junior Dos Santos expressed interest in a rematch with Werdum, as he scored a knockout victory over Werdum back in 2007.

JDS was scheduled to meet Stefan Struve at Feb. 19’s UFC Fight Night 105, but Struve was forced to withdraw with a shoulder injury, making a fight between Werdum and Dos Santos a logical bout to make.

It has yet to come to fruition, however, and Werdum recently explained why:

“I wasn’t apt to fight him at that moment because as soon as they canceled the (Cain) Velasquez scrap, I stopped training entirely,” Werdum told MMAjunkie. “I really stopped. I traveled with my family, I did what I always do after I fight – I travel, do seminars, go on vacations. In my head, it was like I’d fought, because I’d prepared for that moment.

“I didn’t want what happened when I fought (Alistair) Overeem in Strikeforce, when I went past my point and went into overtraining, to happen again. So I stopped training, to get some rest. The body needs that. They speculated this fight with ‘Cigano’ – they never offered it to me officially, but they talked about me fighting him in February. But it wasn’t the time. When they schedule the fight with ‘Cigano,’ it won’t be right away. I’ll prepare for it.”

With Dos Santos left without an opponent, rumors began to swirl that the UFC was targeting a title rematch between champion Stipe Miocic and “Cigano”, although Werdum feels as if that bout is unfair:

“I don’t really think (Miocic vs. Dos Santos) is fair,” Werdum said. “Because I’m the last champ. Going by logic, there’s a (UFC) ranking, it’s there for a reason, and I’m the No. 1. Obviously it’s not a tournament, but I imagined the fight with Velasquez that didn’t happen as a semifinal. It was between Cain and I, and whoever won would fight for the belt. That was practically a given. That’s what everybody saw.”

What do you make of the current heavyweight title picture?
