Eryk Anders is back in the win column after picking up a first-round knockout victory at UFC Minneapolis this past weekend (Sat. June 29, 2019).

Anders put Vinicius Moreira away to snap his three-fight losing streak. Now, the 32-year-old is already plotting his return to the Octagon, and he’d love for it to take place in the state he grew up in later this month. Speaking to MMA Junkie, Anders revealed he’d like to fight on the UFC on ESPN 4 card from San Antonio, Texas on July 20:

“It would mean the world to me to get out there (at UFC on ESPN 4 in my birth city of San Antonio, Texas). I really don’t get to get back home (often).

“It’s always awesome to get in there and fight in front of your home town. It’s been a while since I’ve been home. … It would mean the world to me to get in there and put on a performance in front of them.”

Anders has been one of the more exciting competitors at both middleweight and light heavyweight since joining the UFC in 2017. He has shared the Octagon with some notable names such as Lyoto Machida, Thiago Santos, and Khalil Rountree Jr.

Should he get the quick turnaround to fight at UFC San Antonio, it would be interesting to see who the Las Vegas-based promotion matches him up against.

Who would you like to see Anders take on in his next Octagon appearance?

Demian Maia continues to compete at the highest level of mixed martial arts (MMA) competition despite being 41-years-old.

Last night (Sat. June 29, 2019) Maia picked up a second-straight victory inside the Octagon at UFC Minneapolis by defeating Anthony Rocco Martin. Maia out-pointed Martin after three rounds from the Target Center. Speaking to MMA Junkie after the contest, Maia admitted he only has one or two fights left in him before calling it a career.

Ideally, the Brazilian would like to retire in his native country later this year in November. As for his opponent, Maia suggests a meeting with a fellow UFC veteran, Diego Sanchez:

“Maybe (his next fight) will be the last one – I hope to do that in Sao Paulo in November,” Maia said. “Diego Sanchez is asking to fight, so it would be a good fight, two veterans. After that, maybe I do a couple more. But for sure, this year or next year, I’ll stop and retire.”

Being so far into his career, Maia said he still feels great physically and continues fighting for his love of the sport. However, he has other projects he wants to invest in, which he’d have to step away from fighting in order to pursue:

“I feel pretty well, and I feel that in training,” Maia said. “That’s why I keep going, because I love what I do. If I start to feel my body, then I will stop. Because I feel so well, I keep going.

“But I have other projects that I want to do, and that’s the only thing that makes me think about stopping. It’s more about the other things I want to do.”

What do you think about a possible matchup between Maia and Sanchez?

Last night (Sat. June 29, 2019) Joseph Benavidez threw a wrench into the flyweight and bantamweight title plans.

Benavidez finished Jussier Formiga in the co-main event of UFC Minneapolis in spectacular fashion. With other challengers such as Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling at bantamweight also waiting for their shot at two-division champion Henry Cejudo, it will be interesting to see who will get the opportunity first.

Of course, any title fight would have to wait for some time, as “Triple C” will be on ice for several months following a recent surgery. In the wake of Benavidez’s big win, Sterling took to Twitter to comment on possibly losing a title opportunity to the longtime veteran after his TKO victory.

Sterling admitted he “wouldn’t be mad” losing out on a title shot to Benavidez, who is a pioneer of the sport for the lighter weight classes:

“If I lost the first crack at @HenryCejudo to @JoeJitsu, I wouldn’t be mad at all. Joey B is legend of the game and with that performance it’s tough to argue who should get the first chance to dethrone the King. Congrats Benevidez!”

Who do you think should get the first title nod between Sterling and Benavidez?

Last night (Sat. June 29, 2019) Junior dos Santos came up short in his efforts to stop the hype train of Francis Ngannou.

The pair main evented UFC Minneapolis from the Target Center in Minnesota. Unfortunately for the Brazilian, he left himself wide open after overextending on an overhand strike, which allowed “The Predator” to crack him with some nasty shots from behind, dropping “Cigano” down, before being finished off on the canvas.

Hours removed from the fight, dos Santos released the following statement on Instagram in regards to his loss:

“Guys, first of all I want to thank everybody for your support. I’m sorry the show was short this time, and without a great result for us. I’ve been on top of this sport and weight class for over a decade, and I plan to be here for a long time still. I love fighting, I love my life, and I’m really grateful for every opportunity I have to grow and evolve.

“The climb is tough and long, as you all know and sometimes — like tonight — months of perfect preparation and strategy are overshadowed by a millisecond mistake. There isn’t much to say now other than to congratulate Francis Ngannou for capitalizing so effectively on my mistake.”

With his defeat, dos Santos has his three-fight win streak snapped, and his quest to return to a heavyweight title fight restarts. As for Ngannou, he is now the leading candidate to receive a title opportunity following Daniel Cormier vs. Stipe Miocic at UFC 241 in August. However, only time will tell if Ngannou does, in fact, receive the nod.

What did you make of dos Santos’ loss to Ngannou last night at UFC Minneapolis?
