UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is looking to make the fourth defense of her 115-pound title when she meets fellow undefeated Polish contender Karolina Kowalkiewicz at November 12’s UFC 205 from the famed Madison Square Garden in New York.

While admitting that Kowalkiewicz is a well-rounded fighter, Jedrzejczyk doesn’t seem to be worried, and she doesn’t see the fight lasting until the final bell either:

“She’s taken big steps in her fighting career,” Jedrzejczyk said. “She’s a UFC fighter, she’s gone 3-0 in the UFC so she’s doing pretty well. “She’s very tough physically and mentally. Her cardio is on point so like I said, it’s going to be a really, really good fight.”

“I will mix a little bit of the fight with Jessica Penne and she’s going to get enough punches and kicks to the head. Then I will take a little bit of the fight with Carla Esparza. She will try to take me down because she will have had enough of the punches. Then I will finish her on the ground with a maximum of round three.

“This fight is very big for me. I don’t want to just win; I want to win so badly. Even more than with Claudia Gadelha,” Jedrzejczyk told Submission Radio.

“Joanna Champion” also acknowledged that Kowalkiewicz will likely come in with a solid game plan, although she claims that she’s a ‘different’ type of animal:

“The thing is though, we all have these kind of plans until the first punch. All of my opponents have had some plans, Karolina has some plans for our upcoming fight, but the thing is I’m a different fighter. I’m a really tough fighter on the night of the fight–I’m like the person from the hood. Until the first punch she might have some game plan, but after that not anymore.”

Demian Maia Offers His Prediction For Woodley vs. Thompson

Brazilian jiu-jitsu guru and No. 3-ranked UFC welterweight contender Demian Maia is likely deserving of a title shot. Brazilian jiu-jitsu guru and No. 3-ranked UFC welterweight contender Demian Maia is likely deserving of a title shot. He’s won a super impressive six straight and is coming off of a dominant first round submission victory over No. 4-ranked former interim titleholder Carlos Condit. Despite his recent body of work, Maia will have to wait for his shot, as the 170-pound title is set to be defended at November 12’s UFC 205 from New York when champion Tyron Woodley battles Stephen Thompson.

As far as that fight goes, Maia feels as if Woodley has the power to retain his title, although the Brazilian ultimately sees “Wonderboy” getting the job done:

“The fight is a little more for ‘Wonderboy,’” Maia said during a recent Q&A session in England. “I think he probably will be able to control the way Rory (MacDonald) did with Woodley. Like movement and control the distance, but Woodley is always dangerous with the big right hand. If he hits him with the right hand, it will be a problem.

“If not, I think ‘Wonderboy’ will win by points or TKO, something like that.”

Maia, hopeful that he’ll receive a crack at the winner of UFC 205’s co-main event bout, also spoke on how he’d matchup with Thompson, one of the sport’s very best strikers:

“He’s an unorthodox striker and I’m an unorthodox grappler. Let’s see. I believe in jiu-jitsu, I believe in my style. I believe I’m going to win if I fight him,” Maia said about Thompson.

“Every fighter that I’ve fought in the UFC in the welterweight (division), they didn’t want to go to the ground with me, and I was able to put all my opponents to the ground. I was able to take all the guys down. Everybody trains wrestling so I’m pretty confident in my takedowns. I know everybody’s going to try to avoid (that) but even the fights that I lost in this division, I took everybody down. So it’s not going to be different.”

Who do you see walking away with welterweight gold next month, and could you see Maia eventually reaching the top of the mountain?

Stephen Thompson Says Fans Are In Tyron Woodley’s Head

After he knocked out Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 on July 30, 2016 in Atlanta, Georgia to become the undisputed welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley made it clear that he was interested in ‘money fights’ with Georges St. Pierre and Nick Diaz rather than a clash with deserving No. 1-contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Woodley wasn’t granted his wish, however, and he and Thompson will battle for 170-pound supremacy in the co-main event of November 12’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York.

The two came face to face last week at the UFC 205 press conference, and surprisingly, Woodley received a harsh welcome from the fans. Not only did there appear to be some tension between “The Chosen One” and the fans, but many expected there to be tension between the two combatants as well, as Woodley recently said that he didn’t respect Thompson.

“Wonderboy” feels as if this was simply a ‘scare tactic’, however, as he admitted that things were ‘cool’ between the two at the press conference:

“Yeah, everything was cool during last week, during the media. We were talking to each other, shaking hands. Like I said, it might have been like a scare tactic or something he was trying to do to get in my head,” Thompson told Submission Radio. “And obviously I let him know real quick it’s not gonna work.”

Continuing on, “Wonderboy”, who doesn’t appear to be bothered by Woodley’s actions, said that the fans may have gotten into the head of the titleholder:

“And looking in his eyes, I don’t know if there was a little disappointment there that I saw. I figured that he might’ve thought that the fans maybe would’ve had his back. He was a little surprised that they were booing him and I could tell that, and I think that’s in his head a little bit.”

UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is coming of of an impressive decision victory over rival Claudia Gadelha on July 8, 2016, and she will next defend her title against fellow undefeated Polish fighter Karolina Kowalkiewicz at November 12’s UFC 205 from New York.

While she had hoped that the fight would take place in Poland, the champion is excited to compete at Madison Square Garden, and she expects to be a ‘different fighter’ than she was in July:

“I feel I am going to be a different fighter than I was in the fight against Claudia Gadelha,” Jedrzejczyk said on a recent edition of The MMA Hour. “I don’t want to just swing with Karolina, I want to really, really put on a good show. Because it’s me. I like Karolina, I like all of the crazy things coming up. People want to ask for proof to see who is the best in Poland, but I am the best in the world. I just want to be the best in the world. It’s a very big deal. People want this fight to happen in Poland, but, I am an international champion. Of course I want to fight in Poland for my fans and my family, but maybe next time. Karolina should be happy that we are going to fight at UFC 205.”

Both fighters are undefeated in their professional careers, but “Joanna Champion” actually holds a submission win over Kowalkiewicz in an amateur bout back in 2012. On top of that, Jedrzejczyk claims that her upcoming opponent is ‘fake’ and that she has something to prove next month:

“I met her in a lobby. She was super nice and super cute. She came to me with her coach and they hug me and she was nice. Her problem is that she is a fake person. Before my fight with Gadleha, we shoot commercial for our sponsor, we had a photo shoot together and she was super nice and talking a lot. But, after her fight with Rose, she said a lot of bad things and that’s the reason. She said I’m afraid of her and that I’m going to lose my belt. Come on, let’s be serious. She is fake and I am going to prove to everyone that she is.”

UFC 205 is set to be headlined by a lightweight title fight between Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor. 170-pound champion Tyron Woodley will also defend his title against Stephen Thompson on the card.

After he gained revenge on bitter rival Nate Diaz in their rematch at UFC 202 on August 20, 2016, featherweight champion Conor McGregor said the two would likely fight for a third time down the road.

But UFC President Dana White said that he was moving away from the rivalry for the time being, and it appears he’s sticking to it, at least for now. Recently speaking on the topic, White once again showed little interest in a third bout between the two stars:

“You can’t do three,” White told Hot 97 in New York. “Here’s the thing, Conor McGregor is this guy where if a fight falls out, this guy will step up. He doesn’t give a (expletive). He’s legitimately that guy. I’ve been on the phone and I’ve stood in the living room many times and looked guys in the face when their opponent pulls out, nobody faces that adversity the way that Conor McGregor does.

“It’s awesome and it makes me respect him very much.”

The two first met at UFC 196 last March in an instant classic that saw Diaz score an emphatic second-round submission victory. The rematch then turned out to be a five-round war in which each fighter had his moments. The “Notorious” one, however, took home a close majority decision victory.

From a business perspective, the rivalry is a lucrative one to say the least, as UFC 202 reportedly broke the all-time pay-per-view (PPV) record that was set by UFC 196. White, however, says a third contest ‘doesn’t make sense’:

“(Conor) ends up saying ‘let’s do this Nate Diaz thing’ and dude he’s two weight classes heavier than you and he doesn’t care. So we do the fight,” White explained. “Conor has to try to weigh 168 when they’re weighing in at 170. The night of the fight, Diaz comes in at 190. Now Conor McGregor is a 45, 55 pound guy and if you look at the wars he’s had with Diaz, you can only have so many of those wars in your career. It doesn’t make sense.

“That’s why we have weight classes. It ended up being an amazing fight, but you don’t want to keep doing that.”

Instead, McGregor will next challenge lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in the main event of November 12’s UFC 205 from New York. Despite this being a blockbuster fight, the UFC has received a bit of criticism for allowing McGregor to call his shots so to say, as the Irishman has yet to defend his featherweight strap that he won last December.
Continuing on, White explained why McGregor gets this ‘special’ treatment:

“That’s why I give this guy way more rope than I give anybody else. Conor can say whatever the hell he wants to, the guy steps up on four days notice, he can say whatever he wants,” White said.

“We’re in the fight game, who really wants to fight? That dude wants to fight.”

Do you approve of McGregor facing Alvarez, and would you like to see him and Diaz run it back one more time in the future?

Knockout machine and UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will attempt to punch his way towards a second title at November 12’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York when he takes on reigning 155-pound champion Eddie Alvarez. After two fights at welterweight against Nate Diaz, the 145-pound titleholder will look to become the first man in promotional history to hold two titles simultaneously, and his striking coach, Owen Roddy, has no issue seeing this taking place.

Although he did note that McGregor will have to prepare for Alvarez’s wrestling, Roddy said on a recent edition of Submission Radio that it’ll only be ‘a matter of time before Alvarez goes to sleep’:

“I honestly never really change my prediction because I see what Conor does day in, day out in the gym. I see how clean his striking is and I see how powerful he is. And I honestly think Alvarez has been dropped a few times and stuff like that. So I mean, that’s not good knowing when you’re going in to fight Conor McGregor. If you’ve been dropped before and you’re going in fighting Conor McGregor, there’s a very, very high chance that you’re going to be dropped again. Alvarez is a great wrestler, so there will be things we’ll be working on with Conor to make sure that Alvarez can’t keep a hold of him, can’t keep him against the fence, but Conor’s gonna land and I think it’s going to be a matter of time before Alvarez goes to sleep to be totally honest.”

McGregor himself also predicted a first round finish over “The Silent Assassin” at last week’s press conference.

As far as the striking department goes, McGregor may indeed hold the advantage over Alvarez, who’s coming off of a brutal stoppage victory over Rafael dos Anjos last July. The Irishman, however, has suffered all three of his career losses by way of submission which could boost Alvarez’s confidence as the champion likely has the superior grappling.

In the end, styles make fights, and this ‘super fight’ should prove to be an exciting contest.
