Colby Covington made headlines recently when he revealed he was told he would be cut no matter the result against Demian Maia back in 2017.

Because of that, Covington started playing a heel to make headlines and effectively save his UFC career. In essence, Covington “broke kayfabe” by revealing that he was playing a character which drew a lot of reaction from the combat sports world.

But when asked about those comments, Covington clarified things — he is not playing a character, he is simply dialing his own personality up a notch:

“I’m not playing a character, I’m just being real,” Covington told MMA Junkie at Thursday’s UFC 245 media day. “I think they don’t know what they’re talking about. I think I’m just turning it up to 11. I’m not afraid to speak my mind and speak what I really think inside. Before I was keeping those thoughts in because I was worried about how people would judge me, how the media would react, how the UFC would judge me for it.

“Now I don’t give a (expletive). I would care less what they think of me. At the end of the day I’m what’s good for this sport and I’m making money for this company.”

If Covington was putting on an act just to get ahead and put money in his pocket, the whole thing would be worth it if he ends up beating Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title at UFC 245 this Saturday.

But don’t expect him to change things up if that is the case:

“I’m just going to be myself always,” Covington added. “I can’t say if I’m going to do one thing or not, I’m just going to be real. That’s what I’ve always been, is real. Maybe I’ll turn down some of the post-fight antics a little bit, but this is the entertainment show-business for a reason and I’m here to put on a show for the fans.

“It’s not just when you fight. You’ve got to entertain them year-round and that’s why the fans love me so much.”

What do you think of Covington’s comments?

Amanda Nunes: Germaine de Randamie Lost Legacy As UFC Champion By Vacating Title

Two-weight champion Amanda Nunes doesn’t regard Germaine de Randamie as a former title-holder after the latter virtually vacated her title.

De Randamie became the first-ever women’s featherweight champion when she outpointed Holly Holm back at UFC 208 in February 2017. However, with Cris Cyborg slated to be her next opponent, “The Iron Lady” refused to fight her given the former’s history of having failed a drug test.

She was subsequently stripped of the title but will have a chance to become champion again when she challenges Nunes in a rematch for the bantamweight title at UFC 245 this weekend. But for Nunes — who notably knocked out Cyborg to become the featherweight champion — the true test in being a champion is defending your belt:

“You only prove you’re a champion if you defend your belt,” Nunes said at the UFC 245 athlete panel on Wednesday (via MMA Junkie). “She proved she give up her belt, she’s not supposed to be in this spot that I am right now.

“I feel like she’s evolved a lot, but I have all the answers for Saturday night. I will walk away with my belt without a doubt in my mind.”

Despite not considering de Randamie as a former champ, Nunes acknowledges that she has evolved since they first met back in 2013. Nunes defeated de Randamie by first-round TKO on that occasion.

“I do I see she’s evolved a lot, of course, specially in her wrestling defense,” Nunes added. “It’s improved a lot, but her striking has changed a lot. She use to move a lot, now she’s kind of more stiff and that’s going to help me a lot put in my game plan.

“And yeah, I look at my first fight with her and if she makes the same mistakes, I will capitalize and finish the fight.”

Do you agree with Nunes?

Jose Aldo showed appreciation for Conor McGregor after the latter defended him.

Aldo is set to make his bantamweight debut when he faces Marlon Moraes on the main card of UFC 245 this Saturday in Las Vegas. Leading up to the event, the big topic is how he’s looking. Aldo already struggled to make 145 and he’s now looking even more drained sparking health concerns.

Despite all the concern, Aldo says he feels great. And when Ariel Helwani questioned the move down, McGregor notably defended his old rival’s decision:

“I disagree here. He looks more than on top of it in my experienced opinion. Well trimmed in advance, and naturally a lighter man now. This can only be done over a long length of time and with complete dedication. Respect! I wish him well and am excited to see him in this division.”

When made aware of McGregor’s comments, Aldo responded:

“Of course I took it to heart,” Aldo said on media day (via BJ Penn). “All of the great champions know what type of sacrifice it takes for us to achieve things. The other people, the other fighters, they can only dream of this.

“So it means a lot to me that it comes from him (Conor McGregor). He is a champion in two-weight classes. He knows the sacrifices that I’ve had to make and I really take the comment/compliment to heart.”

After their heated rivalry back in 2015, it’s nice to see the two see eye-to-eye on one thing at least.

What do you make of their interaction?

With UFC 245 a few days away, Colby Covington is dialing things up a notch.

Covington challenges Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title this Saturday in Las Vegas. It is a heated grudge match between the two bitter rivals with a lot of personal insults and political angles involved.

With Covington’s open support of Donald Trump and his presidency, Usman claimed earlier this year that he would put the wrath of every immigrant when he beats him up. Most recently, he added that he was more of an American than Covington because he actually lived the American Dream by coming over as an immigrant and achieving his goals.

Covington wasn’t too impressed by those comments. In an interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, “Chaos” responded in a way that could only be expected from him:

“Well, Marty’s been saying all these things that he’s more American than me,” Covington responded when asked the reasons behind his Trump gear on media day. “There’s nothing more American about him than me.

“Let’s be honest, my family served in the military. They shed blood for the red, white and blue. What’s his family ever served besides in the federal penitentiary?”

Covington, of course, is referring to Usman’s father being arrested for 15 years.
