Top-ranked UFC lightweight was looking to prove he truly deserved a title shot by earning his sixth straight win over Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson in the main event of tonight’s (Saturday, January 30, 2015) UFC on FOX 18 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, but as ‘Darth’ found out, there’s power, and then there’s ‘Rumble’ power.

After his UFC 187 loss to current champion Daniel Cormier, Bader and his Power MMA head coach Aaron Simpson believed that Johnson was susceptible to wrestling and a quitter. They tested that theory early on in the bout, but it turned out to work against them in destructive fashion.

Thanks in no small part to heavyweight grappling coach Neil Melanson, ‘Rumble’ easily sprawled Bader’s takedown to turn the tables in the mount, flattening his opponent out and finishing ‘Darth’ with a vicious slew of heavy punches to earn the knockout victory at 1:26 of the first round. Tonight’s (Saturday, January 30, 2015) UFC on FOX 18 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, delivered a hard-hitting mix of solid fights and finishes, and much of that recognition came at the top.

Light heavyweight destroyer Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson made short work of the previously surging Ryan Bader in less than a minute-and-a-half, staving off an early takedown to demolish ‘Darth’ with some shockingly powerful knockout shots. Johnson not surprisingly took home the event’s first $50,000 ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus for the impressive win.

In the co-main event, heavyweight Ben Rothwell got a historic victory by becoming the first man to ever make Josh Barnett tap out due to a submission hold when he submitted ‘The Warmaster’ with his patented gogo choke in the second round, earning the second ‘Performance of the Night’ in the process.

‘Fight of the Night’ went to the bantamweight scrap between Jersey hometown favorite Jimmie Rivera and veteran Iuri Alcantara, which Rivera edged by unanimous decision.

Wow, looks like it’s back to the drawing board for UFC lightweight prospect Sage Northcutt. His late replacement opponent Bryan Barberena also trolled ‘Super’ Sage right after the fight…

Sage Northcutt returned for the third time to the UFC octagon tonight, moving up to welterweight on short notice to face replacement underdog Bryan Barbernera. Few expected ‘Bam Bam’ to make much of a fight out of this one, but boy, he did just that.

Northcutt looked athletic nd explosive in the opening round, but was visibly slowed by the second round. Similar to the Rockhold vs Weidman fight recently, the beginning of the end came from a poorly telegraphed kick.

As Barbernera took the fight to the ground, it was clear that Northcutt had nothing for him offensively or defensively. Elbows were landing with high frequency, and then came the moment no-one expected.

The choke didn’t appear to be in, as ‘Bam Bam’ was both in half guard and on the wrong side, and Joe Rogan questioned whether Sage tapped too early. Barberena also trolled Northcutt’s flip after his fiery post fight interview.

Check out both videos courtesy of UFC on FOX:
