19-year old Sage Northcutt suffered his first professional loss at UFC on FOX 18. Let’s be honest, the reaction has been pretty much despicable…

UFC overnight sensation Sage Northcutt returned to action at the eventful UFC on FOX 18 card this past Saturday (January 30, 2016) as he moved up a weight class to face Bryan Barberena. His debut performance at welterweight couldn’t have gone much worse, as the grinding grappling and ground ‘n’ pound of ‘Bam Bam’ exposed many holes in ‘Super’ Sage’s game. He got tapped out in the second round from a side choke you don’t see very often, applied from the wrong side and from the half guard position.

If this were your run of the mill fighter, a lower tier guy that no one had really heard much about, the submission itself would’ve been the major talking point. It being Northcutt made things a little different, as the 19-year old prospect has been receiving a lot of media attention lately. It’s fair to say the UFC invested a lot more interest, time and money in ‘Super’ Sage than they would in most other athletes, but let’s look at that for one second.

Sage Northcutt 1

Northcutt came to the UFC, albeit off the back of a clearly angled ‘Dana White Looking For a Fight’ show, as an undefeated and clearly promising prospect. Trained in martial arts and fitness for his entire life, and quite obviously a very marketable character, the 19-year old fits in to the mould of a modern day athlete almost perfectly. So what were the UFC to do? Let’s not pretend that the promotion hasn’t been doing this for two decades, although they used to spare this money and attention for fighters that were at the top of the game, but now it’s become about making that image and selling it all along the way. One thing that you’ll notice so far, none of this is Northcutt’s doing.

Anyway, we digress, in the moments directly after Northcutt’s first UFC and professional MMA loss, the community once again turned against one of their fallen, and showed how it’s not only inside the octagon that can be a very lonely place for a fighter.

A stream of hurtful reactions from MMA fighters across the board started to hit media headlines, and well known UFC faces like Tony Ferguson had some words for Northcutt after his loss. ‘Tapped like a b*tch’ was what ‘El Cucuy’ described the finish as, and clearly these words fuelled by Northcutt’s already upper level payscale in comparison to most other fighters at his age and level.

Northcutt had reacted to these criticisms before stepping in to the octagon against Barberena, a late replacement in a new weight class, by saying he brought something different to the game, and urging other fighters to do the same. This statement could be taken two ways, as advice or criticism. Clearly some fighters took it as the latter, but the overall reaction was the same; a community rejoiced in the pain and defeat f a 19-year old martial artist.

There’s so much more to this story though, as you’ll find out on the next page.

With UFC On FOX 18 officially in the books, it’s time to find out how much money fighters who competed on Saturday’s fight card earned via their new, mandatory Reebok sponsorship deals.

19-year-old phenom “Super” Sage Northcutt has received a huge backing from the UFC since his debut just a few months back at UFC 192 in October, with the promotion obviously sensing a massive amount of potential in him.

After running through Francisco Trevino in just 57 seconds, Northcutt scored a second round submission over Cody Pfister at December 10’s UFC Fight Night 80 from Las Vegas.

After scoring two straight victories, “Super” Sage was ready for his third bout last night (January 30, 2016), as he took on late replacement Bryan Barberena on the main card of UFC on FOX 18.

Northcutt finally hit a road block, however, suffering a second round submission loss. In the aftermath of the setback, the Texas native has received quite a bit of criticism, even from some fellow fighters.

Surging lightweight contender Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson took to his official twitter account to take a shot at a downed Northcutt:

While some took the chance to pepper “Super” Sage, others were there to defend him, specifically No. 2-ranked 155 pounder Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov, who just so happens to be scheduled to meet Ferguson at April’s UFC on FOX 19.

Nurmagomedov fired back at “El Cucuy”, calling him a “jealous bum”:

In the end, Ferguson would drop one more insult towards “The Eagle” and his notorious injury issues:

While Northcutt obviously has some holes to fill, he still has a long future ahead of him in the sport of mixed martial arts.

Do you see the young star bouncing back from the loss?

The four-fight main card didn’t offer fans too much to talk about compared to other high-profile events, but the action was memorable to say at least. Especially when you consider the divisional implications and glaring answers that each bout possessed.

Here are five key takeaways from UFC on FOX 18 as the winners and losers dig deep into 2016.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is just as much based on business, marketing, and promotion, as it is on actual fighting inside of the Octagon.

With that being said, we often see certain fighters receive huge promotional pushes from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) simply because they possess the looks, the charisma, or the media power in order to become a mega star.

However, these fighters don’t always have what it takes to succeed in the cage, or in other words, live up to the massive hype that has been placed on them.

Of course we have seen tremendously promoted combatants rise through the ranks, and demolish competition on their way to the superstardom the UFC had paved for them.

In just the last few years, we have seen many young up and coming fighters pushed by the UFC, noting four in particular.

The interesting part here, however, is that only one remains on top, at least for now.

Let’s take a closer look:

After a back-and-forth first round where both fighters landed a good number of crisp and effective strikes, it was ‘Big’ Ben who scored perhaps his biggest win by becoming the first fighter to submit world-class grappler Barnett in the second with his now-trademark gogo choke.
