The UFC may be heading to Newark, New Jersey, for this weekend’s (Sat., January 30, 2016) UFC on FOX 18, but almost the entire focus of the collective MMA world is fixated on Cain Velasquez’s withdrawal from his UFC 196 heavyweight title rematch against current champion Fabricio Werdum on February 6 from Las Vegas.

The story goes that Velasquez pulled out of yet another title fight due a back injury, and rising No. 2 heavyweight Stipe Miocic was signed to replace the oft-injured former champion. It was a large blow to an already somewhat weak pay-per-view (PPV) card, but things only sank when Werdum withdrew from the short-notice bout the next day after claiming back and foot injuries of his own.

Disappointing yet understandable; however, things truly hit the proverbial fan when Werdum came out and admitted that he would have fought through the presumably nagging injuries if Velasquez were able to fight at the event. The puzzling statement not surprisingly elicited a rather negative backlash directed at Werdum, most of which was the to-be-expected belief that he was ‘scared’ and wasn’t willing to step up and save an event for his employers.

While there is certainly merit to both sides of the discussion, ultimately Werdum simply had too much at stake to risk in a short notice bout against a dangerous but largely unpopular champion, one where his PPV points weren’t likely to be all that good as a result. Whether you can accept Werdum’s points of view or not, the currently targeted champion spoke up in a detailed statement (courtesy of MMA Fighting) explaining his decision.

The eighteenth installment of UFC on FOX should be quite the doozy.

Headlined by a light heavyweight clash between knockout specialist Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and surging veteran Ryan Bader for No. 1 contender rights, Saturday’s card stands to deliver in fashion.

Outside of the main event, an ultra-important heavyweight bout between Josh Barnett and Ben Rothwell adds even more power to UFC on FOX 18. That, too, offers title implications in a division in which Can Velasquez was just replaced by Stipe Miocic for UFC 196’s championship bout with Fabricio Werdum.

For all four headliners, this weekend represents a crossroad in their respective careers. Some need to prove they can deliver on the grandest of stages, while others need to show they still have enough gusto left on their high-mileage motor.

Find out what’s at stake for each top-bill fighter entering the first FOX card of 2016.

Josh Barnett Offers To Fight Stipe Miocic For Heavyweight Title

The UFC’s heavyweight division has been thrown for quite the loop in the past two days.

Yesterday (January 24, 2015) it was announced that former champion Cain Velasquez was out of his scheduled rematch with champion Fabricio Werdum at February 6’s UFC 196 due to injury. No. 2-ranked Stipe Miocic quickly stepped in to take on “Vai Cavalo”, but it was reported earlier today that the Brazilian was also pulling out of the bout due to an injury, leaving the promotion and Miocic in a limbo.

In the midst of all of the commotion, No. 8-ranked former divisional king Josh “The Warmaster” Barnett, who’s slated to meet Ben Rothwell at this weekend’s UFC on FOX 18, offered to take on Miocic for the title if need be:

“If they page me 911, if they send me the number, I will absolutely take the fight,” Barnett told MMAFighting. “If they want a heavyweight championship main event, I’m your man. I’ll go in. I’ll take care of business and I’ll give them what they want. I’ll give them what they need, which is a healthy, motivated championship fighter. That’s what they’ll get.”

“Interim title,” Barnett said. “It’s set up for a title match. Let’s keep it going. That’s what they need on Super Bowl weekend. They need a title fight. They need a heavyweight title fight. That’s what we can provide. Former champ and a No. 1 contender. That’s what people want to see.  They want to see championship level fights. They want to see the top guys go at it. We can do it.”

“The Warmaster” continued on, saying that he’s completely healthy, and if it were up to him he would go five rounds for the title right now:

“I’m ready,” Barnett said. “I’m willing. I’m capable. I’ll fight Stipe. I’ll go five rounds for a heavyweight title right now. We’re good.”

“For whatever reason, Werdum is hurt, Cain is hurt,” Barnett said, “Stipe stepped up and now Stipe doesn’t have a partner to dance with. I’ll dance with him. And then we’ll fight. And then maybe I’ll dance with him again afterwards. A nice slow one. When we’re all beat up and bruised and battered. When we’re vulnerable. That’s the time to go cheek to cheek on the dance floor.”

Although an interesting proposition, the idea is quite unlikely given Barnett’s upcoming fight, and the fact that Werdum should only be out for a few months.

“The Warmaster’s” opponent, Rothwell, also took to his official twitter account to voice his displeasure towards the idea:

What should the UFC do regarding not only UFC 196, but the heavyweight division in general?

This Saturday night (January 30, 2016) the UFC returns with the anticipated UFC on FOX 18 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The free television event features a pivotal light heavyweight main event between No. 2-ranked former title challenger Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and streaking contender Ryan Bader, whose been very vocal about a title shot due to five straight victories.

He’ll almost certainly get it if he can get past the monstrous challenge of “Rumble,” who most recently rebounded from his discouraging title loss to Daniel Cormier at UFC 187 by knocking out Jimi Manuwa at September’s UFC 191, but that opportunity will be held up based on what happens in the awaited return of former champion Jon Jones.

Either way, his fight with Johnson is undoubtedly the biggest of his career, and one that will shape the near future of the relatively shallow UFC light heavyweight division. To prepare for the event, the UFC has released Road to the Octagon for UFC on FOX 18’s main bouts. Watch the full segment for “Rumble” vs. Bader right here, and look out for the second and third videos on the following pages:
