Had it not been for the fabulous world of Twitter, or rather Dana White‘s compulsive obsession to use the Internet forum, the fans would be missing out on some exciting news.

Just last night, the UFC President announced a welterweight collision which will pit contenders Josh Koscheck and Johny Hendricks on the next FOX card.

Now, just a few moments ago, White made yet another fight official for the event, as middleweight standouts Alan Belcher and Rousimar Palhares will meet in a pivotal 185 pound contest.

“Alan Belcher vs Rousimar Palhares fight added to FOX card!!!!!!,” exclaimed the UFC exec.

After a near career-threatening eye injury kept Belcher out of the Octagon for well over a year, the Arkansas native made an emphatic return to the cage when he blasted Jason MacDonald last September, making the Canadian tap due to mounted ground-and-pound blows in the first round.

Belcher is now riding a three-fight win streak, which includes victories over Wilson Gouveia and former title challenger Patrick Cote—stopping all before the final bell.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Rousimar Palhares, who recently took home silver in the prestigious ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships, has been on a tear as of late. After succumbing to blows to former contender Nate Marquardt, “Toquinho” has gone undefeated in his last three bouts and has looked impressive all the while.

Recently, Palhares capped off his three-fight win streak with a crushing victory over collegiate wrestler Mike Massenzio, finishing off the New Jersey fighter with his patented heel hook. His submission victory took all of 63 seconds of cage time, and earned the evening’s “Submission of the Night” award.

The winner between Belcher and Palhares will move themselves into the upper echelon of the middleweight class, where either man will likely be within striking distance of a title shot.

UFC on FOX 3 takes place on May 5 at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where lightweights Nate Diaz and Jim Miller will take center stage in a five-round non-title main event, which will likely serve as a No. 1 contender battle.

It is unclear whether or not Palhares and Belcher will get air time on the live television broadcast.

Dana White Announces Josh Koscheck vs. Johny Hendricks for UFC on FOX 3

UFC head honcho’s Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta are making an effort to connect with the fans with the most invasive and direct way possible via the Internet: Twitter.

Recently, White took to his stylish iPhone to release a gem of good news in the welterweight division despite all the disarray that both Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz have created as of late.

“(Josh) Koscheck vs. Johnny Hendricks is on for FOX!!!,” proclaimed an overly-excited White.

The UFC’s next endeavor on the FOX network takes place on May 5 at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where lightweight notables Nate Diaz and Jim Miller will meet in the main event in a five-round non-title bout which will likely serve as a No. 1 contender battle.

The colorful and controversial Josh Koscheck recently returned to the Octagon just a little over a week ago where he defeated fellow collegiate wrestler Mike Pierce in a lackluster performance, edging the “Battle Troll” by split decision.

The victory helped build upon an emphatic performance last September, where Koscheck took home “Knockout of the Night” for his first-round finish of UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes, which eased the pain of a five-round drubbing from rival Georges St-Pierre in December of 2010.

Hendricks is in the height of his career. After defeating the aforementioned Pierce last August, the Oklahoma native had the daunting task of taking on perennial contender Jon Fitch, who, at the time, was widely considered the consensus No. 2 fighter in the 170-pound division.

Though the underdog, Hendricks silenced critics by stopping Fitch in just 12 seconds, courtesy of the powerful left hook which sent the AKA product crumbling to the canvas, victimized by the heavy hands of “Big Rigg,” who recorded the decisive knockout.

The winner between Hendricks and Koscheck will be on the shortlist of contenders for the welterweight strap, which currently houses two champions in Carlos Condit (the interim titleholder) and Georges St-Pierre.

Gaudinot vs. Lineker Booked for UFC on FOX 3

Gaudinot vs. Lineker should provide a clear contender for the coveted ‘Worst Hair in Professional Sports’ title.

Presumably after enduring three rounds of fatigued middleweights Chris Weidman and Demian Maia leading off UFC on FOX 2, the UFC brass figured it would be a good idea to show off its smaller fighters to the casual fans. For the organization’s third effort on FOX, the UFC will showcase two of its smallest fighters on the roster. Yesterday, the UFC announced a matchup between flyweights Louis Gaudinot and John Lineker has been booked for UFC on FOX 3.

As a bantamweight cast member of TUF 14, Louis Gaudinot lost to Dustin Pague in the fan voted “Fight of the Season” before losing his UFC debut to the much larger Johnny Bedford. As expected, Gaudinot is returning to flyweight, where he went 5-1 before his UFC career.

Meanwhile, Brazilian native John Lineker will be making his UFC debut at UFC on FOX 3. Lineker is 19-5 in his MMA career, and is currently riding a thirteen fight winning streak into the Octagon. His most recent fight saw him earn a split decision over Iliarde Sabino Belo dos Santos at Jungle Fight 32 on September 10 of last year.

UFC on FOX 3 is set to go down at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey on May 5, 2012.

UFC on FOX 3: Updated Card Shows the UFC Is Learning from Their Mistakes

Last weekend, UFC fans were treated to a card on FOX that featured two fights with major title implications and a third bout that set up a future contender in the middleweight division.

While bouts with top talents such as Rashad Evans, Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping seemed like a good idea to feature on network television, the card itself was a disappointment.

The abundance of star power was overshadowed by the fact that the fights themselves were, for lack of a better word, uneventful.

To some fans, this made no difference. Sure, the card didn’t feature any three-round wars or impressive finishes, but it was quality MMA featuring some of the best in their respective weight classes, and while the bouts seemed to be lacking in action, a knowledgeable fan realized how tough all the competitors in the cage were.

Chael Sonnen’s victory over Michael Bisping is a perfect example of this.

The fight won’t be earning any Fight of the Year honors when award season comes around, but it was a true battle of attrition with a ton of exhausting work against the cage and two of the best fighters at 185 lbs. stifling each other’s offense at every turn.

While the fans that watch every event and follow the sport religiously realized that it was an excellent fight, the casual viewer flipping through channels would have found the bout to be about as entertaining as watching paint dry.

The main event between Rashad Evans and Phil Davis was no better, as a clearly outclassed Davis looked lost and disoriented throughout the bout, which Evans dominated.

While the event was a success from a ratings standpoint and gained some hype for two of the biggest upcoming fights of 2012, it failed from an entertainment perspective, at least for casual fans.

There will be no such problems when the UFC returns to network television in May.

A bout between Jim Miller and Nate Diaz was announced late last month, but its position on the card was unknown until this week, when it was announced as the main event of the evening.

While neither Miller nor Diaz are as recognizable as Evans or Sonnen, the two are never in a boring fight, and fans are already preparing themselves for one of the best fights of the year.

And to be honest, unless the UFC decides to throw Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva or Jon Jones on FOX, no one in the organization has a big enough following to truly impact ratings anyway.

Throwing hard-hitting heavyweights Pat Barry and Lavar Johnson on the main card is furthering the UFC’s approach from important fights on FOX being substituted for entertaining ones.

Barry and Johnson are both middle-of-the-pack heavyweights at best and are more likely to end up on the prelims than headline a card anytime soon, but both men have no problem laying it on the line and putting on a show for the fans every time they step into the cage.

Barry seems to earn a fight night bonus every time he puts on his gloves, and Johnson showed off is tremendous power when he destroyed the previously iron-chinned Joey Beltran on the preliminary card last weekend.

In the long run, this bout is going to help the UFC far more than it will either of the fighters involved, as it has the potential to be one of those fights that forces people to pick up the phone and call their friends, a’la Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar in 2005.

The fights for the UFC’s second foray onto FOX weren’t boring, but what they lacked in entertainment is going to be more than made up for the next time the UFC shows up on prime-time.

Even with just two main card bouts announced, Zuffa has already made sure that UFC on FOX 3 will be a hell of a show.

UFC Booking Alert: Pat Barry vs. Lavar Johnson @ UFC on FOX 3, Brandon Vera vs. Thiago Silva Rematch @ UFC on FX 3

(Dude. Don’t even get me started about mustard water. / Props: hypeordie)

After knocking out Christian Morecraft at UFC on FX 1 last month, Pat Barry has booked his next fight. The heavyweight kickboxer will face Lavar Johnson on the main card of UFC on FOX 3, May 5th in New Jersey, which will officially be headlined by a five-round lightweight contest between Nate Diaz and Jim Miller.

Lavar Johnson scored the Knockout of the Night during last weekend’s UFC on FOX 2 card, by smashing Joey Beltran in the first round of their preliminary card meeting. The win snapped a two-fight losing streak that Johnson had carried over from his stint in Strikeforce. His upcoming scrap with Barry seems like a way for the UFC to guarantee some much-needed excitement for their next FOX broadcast. As for Barry, it’s an opportunity to bump his UFC record over .500 and secure back-to-back victories for the first time in his UFC career.

The UFC has confirmed that their third FX card will take place May 15th in Fairfax, Virginia, and will feature a light-heavyweight rematch between Brandon Vera and Thiago Silva. Their first meeting in January 2011 was originally a unanimous decision win for Silva, until he popped positive for a urine adulterant and the fight was changed to a no-contest; Silva later admitted to using prohibited “injections” to treat a back injury he had suffered before the fight. This will be Silva’s first match since coming back from a one-year suspension, while Vera scored a follow-up decision win over Eliot Marshall in October.

UFC on FX 3 will also host a middleweight match between Tom Lawlor and Jason MacDonald.

His suspension for attempting to cheat a drug test now expired, light heavyweight contender Thiago Silva will pick up right where he left off.

Early Thursday morning, the UFC announced through its Twitter account that the Brazilian will meet Brandon Vera in a rematch at UFC on FX 3.

After it was discovered that he had submitted false urine samples for his pre-fight drug test for a UFC 125 fight with Vera, Silva was stripped of his dominant victory and banned from competition for one year. Prior to being slapped with the suspension Silva admitted that he had used steroids to recover from injuries.

Initially released from the UFC due to his loss against Silva, Vera was understandably disgusted with the news that Silva had used steroids prior to their fight.

“Now that I know that he was a juice monkey, for sure, I think he’s a piece of s–t,” Vera told MMA Fighting after the news broke that Silva had been suspended.

After the fight result was overturned to a no contest, the UFC welcomed Vera back into the organization. Since then, Vera has fought once, defeating Eliot Marshall via decision.

With the wounds still healing from their first meeting, there will undoubtedly be some bad blood between Vera and Silva as this fight rematch nears.

UFC on FX 3 is expected to take place at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. on May 15.
