UFC on Fox 4 headliners Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Brandon Vera have combined for two victories within the past two years. Only one year ago, Vera was temporarily released from the UFC after suffering a third straight loss that was subsequently changed to a no-contest.

This was not the matchup the UFC had hoped to promote for one of four Fox-televised main events during the calendar year. However, due to the cancellation of a bout between Hector Lombard and Brian Stann, it is the matchup they and the fans are stuck with.

For better or worse, UFC president Dana White even added title shot implications to the bout in an effort to generate more anticipation for a fight in which “Shogun” will be a massive favorite over Vera. Should either fighter win in impressive fashion on Saturday, they could find themselves in a rematch with current light heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones.

Burning Questions

With a Win, Does Mauricio Rua Deserve a Rematch with Jon Jones or Dan Henderson?

Rua has only beaten Forrest Griffin in his two fights since losing the light heavyweight title to Jones in March, 2011. Right now, “Shogun” is still far from deserving a rematch with Jones, who completely dominated the Brazilian en route to a third-round stoppage.

Even a dominant victory over Vera, who hasn’t won against a highly-ranked opponent since he faced Frank Mir in November 2006, would not change much for Rua’s standing in the 205-pound division. Thus, Rua would not really be deserving of that rematch with Jones until he picks up another win over a top light heavyweight. There would be little fan interest in that matchup, as is the case with many potential fights for Jones, who is already coming close to clearing out his division.

This is assuming Jones will still be champion when Rua next steps into the Octagon, though. The champion has a tough test waiting for him in a September matchup against Henderson.

Should Henderson upset Jones, the feeling regarding a Rua title shot would take on a much different tone.

In his most recent appearance, Rua engaged in one of the most entering fights in MMA history against Henderson. The back-and-forth war ended in a controversial win for Henderson, which had many hoping for a rematch.

Should Rua and Henderson both win in the coming weeks, fans may have the chance to see the light heavyweight warriors go at it again, as that would be a title shot that would make much more sense for Rua.

What Did Brandon Vera Do to Deserve a Fight with Mauricio Rua?

Nothing.

Brandon Vera does not deserve this opportunity to compete against an elite light heavyweight in a Fox-televised main event, but it is a chance he has been afforded and he should do everything he can to make the most of it.

When Vera had his arm broken by opting not to tap in the closing seconds of his most recent fight against Elliot Marshall, he may have paid a price that was worth his UFC career. Now, instead of barely hanging onto his job, Vera has a chance to become a legitimate 205-pound contender.

Rua is widely accepted as a top-five light heavyweight. A win over the Brazilian may not earn Vera a title shot, but it would certainly resurrect a once-promising career.

Keys to Victory

Mauricio Rua

With knockout wins against the likes of Alistair Overeem, Chuck Liddell, Lyoto Machida and Forrest Griffin, it’s understandable that Rua is mostly recognized as a striker. However, his easiest route to victory against Vera may be through taking the fight to the ground.

Vera has been grounded in four of his five career losses and was also taken down in a lopsided fight against Thiago Silva that was eventually declared a no-contest. Rua may not be one of the best wrestlers in the 205-pound division. However, considering he was able to take Dan Henderson down five times in his most recent fight, Rua should be able to accomplish what the likes of Thiago Silva and Keith Jardine were able to against Vera.

This is not to say Rua can’t dominate Vera on his feet, though. The Brazilian is a heavy favorite for good reason and is capable of beating Vera anywhere. Rua can increase his odds of winning, though, by taking the fight to the ground and utilizing his black belt-level jiu-jitsu to negate Vera’s active guard.

Brandon Vera

Although Vera has come up short in just about every significant fight he has competed in as of late, the once-promising fighter still has a well-rounded skill set and reach that can cause problems for many light heavyweights.

While it would be a terrible option for most 205-pound fighters, Vera’s best chance to mount an upset against Rua would be to engage in a battle of leg kicks. The Brazilian may have more power in his kicks, but Vera can strike from slightly greater distance and could potentially out-land Rua if he turns the matchup into a point fighting bout.

If Vera doesn’t fully utilize his reach advantage, he’s either going to find himself being beaten up on the ground or in Rua’s dangerous clinch.

Betting Odds

Mauricio Rua -365

Brandon Vera +275

Prediction

It’s hardly surprising that Rua is a significant favorite over Vera, but it could be argued that the oddsmakers are giving Vera even more credit than they should when you consider co-main event fighter Lyoto Machida is a -335 favorite against an indisputable top-10 light heavyweight in Ryan Bader.

The return won’t be great, but there is some money to be made on the favorite in this fight. Rua is a more skilled fighter than Vera in all areas and has proven himself as elite against top competition fight after fight. Vera, meanwhile, has been incredibly inconsistent, having gone years without a significant victory.

Rua has only gone the distance four times in his 26-fight career. In a five-round fight, whether it be in the clinch or on the ground, the Brazilian will eventually overwhelm Vera with strikes and earn a stoppage before the judges can factor into the outcome of this fight.

This fourth installment of UFC on Fox features two titillating bouts at 205 pounds, with the winner of each destined for a second meeting with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

In the main event of the evening, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua takes on Brandon “The Truth” Vera to see which fighter can turn in a vintage performance and get a shot at the gold.

Meanwhile, Ryan “Darth” Bader squares off against Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida in the co-main event to stake their claim at the coveted light heavyweight title.

In a lightweight showdown, Joe Lauzon squares off with former WEC 155-pound champion Jamie Varner in a bout that will likely separate contender from pretender.

Kicking off the main card, The Ultimate Fighter Season 9 runner-up DaMarques “Darkness” Johnson takes on a Season 1 alumnus in Mike “Quick” Swick, who returns after a nearly 30-month layoff.

Predicting the action this week are Bleacher Report MMA Featured Columnists Jeffrey McKinney, Dan Hiergesell, Dale De Souza and myself, John Heinis.

For better or worse, the light heavyweight division’s next top contender will be determined at UFC on Fox 4, where Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Brandon Vera will compete in what many believe to be a very lopsided main event. Should that fight not produce a worthy title challenger, the UFC brass will look to a co-main event bout between Lyoto Machida and Ryan Bader.

Since capturing the UFC’s 205-pound championship with a knockout of Machida in May 2010, Rua has lost two of his past three fights. Though Rua’s stock is currently trending downward slightly, a rematch of an epic fight with Dan Henderson would sell well if “Hendo” finds a way to dethrone Jon Jones in September.

For Vera, who was temporarily released from the UFC in 2011, a bout with Rua will provide an opportunity for redemption. Once considered a fighter who could contend in multiple weight divisions, Vera hasn’t been able to defeat a highly-ranked opponent since his knockout win over Frank Mir in November 2006.

Like the main event competitors, Machida and Bader are also hunting a rematch with Jones. Machida fell to the light heavyweight champion in his most recent appearance, but the Brazilian arguably became the first fighter to steal a round from the 205-pound king. Meanwhile, Bader is on a two-fight winning streak and will have a chance to pick up another career-defining win in this co-main event.

Before Saturday’s event, which will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the fighters will hit the scales on Friday at 7 p.m. ET. Video of the weigh-ins will be streamed live on the above video player.

After the weigh-ins, stay tuned to Bleacher Report for all the latest on UFC on Fox 4 and the rest of your MMA needs.

UFC on FOX 4: Jon Jones Gives His Predictions for Saturday’s Headlining Fights

If we take what UFC president Dana White says as gospel, the next individual to fight for the UFC light heavyweight title will be one of the four fighters competing in the headlining bouts on Saturday’s UFC on FOX 4 fight card.

During his recent video blog White said, “the co-main event between Lyoto Machida and (Ryan) Bader and the main event between Shogun (Rua) and (Brandon) Vera, the fighter that wins the most impressively on Saturday night will get the title shot.”

So, there you have it, after originally saying the winner of the Mauricio “Shogun” Rua versus Brandon Vera fight would get the title shot, White added another wrinkle, upping the ante by including the Lyoto Machida versus Ryan Bader bout in the mix. And why shouldn’t he have done so?  It ups interest in the fight card and puts pressure on the fighters, sending a clear message that it’s up to them to earn their shot at UFC gold.

One interested observer took to Twitter to offer his take on the fights and each participant, that man was current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who offered his predictions on Saturday’s main event and co-main event via twitter:

My prediction: I got Shogun by decision after a predominant striking match. Vera could make it more interesting if he uses take downs

As for the co-main event:

I could see Machida stopping the fight, out classing Bader with good foot work and fast strikes. Bader needs to turn it into a brawl

So, the champ thinks that the two former UFC light heavyweight champions will prove victorious and lest we forget, Jones has faced the four fighters competing in the headlining bouts on the FOX card, winning all four fights by stoppage.

In addition to his predictions, Jones offered some takeaways from those four victories:

Before you get in some kind of uproar over that last tweet, and sound off on how arrogant the champ is, he quickly followed it up with this:

Just having a little fun. I really do want to wish all 4 guys good luck this weekend. Do your best, Ill do mines on the 1st.

The September 1 fight Jones references is his UFC 151 main event tilt against former Pride and Strikeforce champion Dan Henderson. The two will headline that event from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV.

The Henderson bout will be the fourth attempted defense of the title for Jones. In his three previous defenses he dispatched three former UFC light heavyweight champions, Machida, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Rashad Evans. Only Evans went the distance.

Jones is currently riding a seven-fight winning streak and the only blemish on his record (16-1) came when he was disqualified for delivering illegal 12-to-6 elbows to the head of Matt Hamill .

Henderson is on a winning streak of his own, defeating his last four opponents to run his career record to 29-8. The last time we saw Henderson in the Octagon was at UFC 139, where he gained a unanimous decision victory over Rua in a fight that many billed as one of the top fights in the history of the UFC.

On Saturday one question will be answered in the light heavyweight division, as the next title contender will emerge. The second question, will that fighter face Jones or Henderson? Well, we’ll know the answer to that one in a few weeks.

Dana White: ‘Maybe You Do Rashad vs Weidman and the Winner Gets a Title Shot’

UFC on FOX 4 is monumental for the UFC’s light heavyweight division, as all four men at the top of the card are all fighting for a title shot. All they have to do is go out and win impressively—no small task.

All four are also former Jon Jones victims, and this adds a whole different level of intrigue. However, one name that hasn’t been mentioned at all is Rashad Evans. Evans is coming off a decision loss that saw him become the first man to take Jon Jones the distance during his championship run.

With four fighters all vying for a shot at the belt, it seems like there just may not be any room for Evans at the top of the light heavyweight division anymore.

UFC President Dana White spoke with Bleacher Report and attending MMA media following the UFC on FOX 4 pre-fight press conference, and the topic of Evans’ future came up. White seemed as baffled as fans were, regarding Evans before going into promoter mode and creating a hypothetical fight on the spot.

“Rashad? I dunno. Personally I haven’t talked to Rashad. I’ve heard the talks of him wanting to go to 185 or possibly going to 185. I dunno. If he did, he’d have to fight somebody,” White told Bleacher Report. “Maybe you do Rashad vs. Weidman and the winner of that gets a shot. You know what I mean? That just came off the top of my head.”

As a fan of both Evans and Chris Weidman, I absolutely LOVE this idea. I think that both present interesting stylistic problems for the other and believe that both have the best shot at defeating Anderson Silva. Both have fantastic wrestling and the ability to take the fight wherever they want.

Rashad Evans vs. Chris Weidman? I say book it!
