Joey Beltran debuted with the UFC in February 2010, earning a TKO victory over Rolles Gracie in that bout. He would compete in six more contests in the UFC’s heavyweight division, putting up a UFC record of 3-4 and earning a reputation as one of the toughest fighters in the division before being released in January of this year. Upon his release he dropped to light heavyweight, defeating Anton Talamantes in his debut at 205 pounds.

The slimmed-down Beltran will get a second chance in the UFC, as he has received the call to replace Brandon Vera on the UFC on Fuel TV 4 fight card. Vera had been slated to face James Te Huna on the July 11 card, but an injury to Thiago Silva resulted in Vera being grabbed to fight Silva’s scheduled opponent, former light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

I won’t bore you with all the details and back story on how the Rua versus Silva fight—which was scheduled to take place at UFC 149—turned into Rua versus Vera in the main event of UFC on FOX 4; just be aware that it did, and when it moved, it left Te Huna without an opponent until today.

Te Huna will enter the fight with an overall record of 14-5 and a UFC record of 3-1. Te Huna has yet to go the distance in any of his UFC bouts, with his third-round TKO win over Igor Pokrajac at UFC 110 being the longest bout on his UFC dance card. Of his other three UFC bouts, none have left the first round. In fact, of his 19 professional fights, only one has gone the distance—a 2008 unanimous decision win over Sam Brown.

Beltran has two more career fights than Te Huna, putting together a 14-7 record, with 11 of those wins coming by knockout, one by submission and two via decision. When Beltran does go the distance, he is usually on the losing end, as five of his seven defeats have come via decision.

UFC on Fuel TV 4 is scheduled to take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Kenny Robertson to Replace Jon Fitch Against Aaron Simpson at UFC on FUEL 4 [UPDATED]

(A “Greatest Spinning Backfist of 2011” candidate is getting a second chance at UFC glory.)

Sources close to Kenny Robertson (11-1, 0-1 UFC) have informed CagePotato.com that the Illinois-based welterweight has been offered a fight against Aaron Simpson, in the wake of Jon Fitch’s knee-injury withdrawal. The meeting will take place at UFC on FUEL TV 4, July 11th in San Jose.

Robertson kicked off his MMA career on a 10-0 tear, with nine wins by stoppage. After his Octagon debut at UFC 126 in February 2011 resulted in a TKO loss to Mike Pierce, Robertson was released from the promotion in order to alleviate crowding in the UFC’s roster, and had a difficult time finding opponents. He eventually traveled to Finland for his next (and most recent) fight, where he knocked out Lucio Linhares with a rather amazing spinning backfist at Fight Festival 31 last October.

Robertson didn’t deserve to be cut by the UFC in the first place, and it would be great to see this talented fight-finisher get another shot. We’ll update this post if/when the Simpson vs. Robertson bout is confirmed.

Depending on how you feel about UFC welterweight Jon Fitch, UFC on FUEL TV 4 either just became much more interesting or just suffered a massive blow.

As initially reported by WrestlingObserver.com and confirmed by MMAFighting.com, Jon Fitch has suffered a knee injury and has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming bout against Aaron Simpson at UFC on FUEL TV 4. At this time, a replacement opponent for Aaron Simpson has not been announced.

It’ll be interesting to see who the UFC matches Aaron Simpson up with now, as this bout looked like a pretty clear rebound fight for Fitch. Jon Fitch was looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2011 campaign, which included a disappointing draw against BJ Penn at UFC 127 followed up by the fastest loss of his career, a 12-second knockout loss to Johny Hendricks at UFC 141. Meanwhile, Aaron Simpson will be making his welterweight debut after his last effort saw him drop a split-decision to Ronny Markes at UFC on FUEL TV 1. Before that, Simpson had won three straight fights at middleweight.

UFC on FUEL TV 4 will go down on Wednesday, July 11 in San Jose, California. The event will be headlined by a middleweight clash between Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman. The co-main event of the evening will be a light heavyweight bout between Brandon Vera and James Te-Huna.

Jon Fitch Scratched from UFC on Fuel 4 Due to Injury

You know what I’m getting really tired of? Injuries. Mainly because I hate being the bearer of bad news, and I’ve got more to deliver right now.

On Saturday, the Wrestling Observer reported Jon Fitch must withdraw from his fight at UFC on Fuel 4 with Aaron Simpson due to a knee injury. This report was later confirmed by MMAFighting.com with Jon Fitch’s trainer, “Crazy” Bob Cook.

There is still no word on who is expected to step in as a replacement.

Jon Fitch was looking to get back in the win column after suffering the most devastating loss of his career at the hands of Johny Hendricks at UFC 141. The knockout was the one that Josh Koscheck referenced when building his fight with Hendricks at UFC on FOX 3.

I know that if I’m getting tired of hearing about all these injuries, then Joe Silva and Dana White are losing their collective minds. The summer has turned into a nightmare with how many fighters have been bitten by the injury bug.

Hopefully, this will be the end of it. I don’t want to create any kind of conspiracy theory that the fighter insurance is the cause for all these fighters dropping out. That’s not a theory I wish to pursue.

UFC on Fuel 4 is scheduled for this summer in San Jose, California. The card is headlined by Chris Weidman and Mark Munoz.

UFC Booking Alert: Big Nog Returns vs. Cheick Kongo at UFC 149, Munoz vs. Weidman to Headline UFC on FUEL 4

(Fun fact: Nogueira’s body is composed mainly of replacement parts from grave-robbed corpses.)

UFC 149 (July 21st, Calgary) is picking up some heavyweight muscle in the form of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cheick Kongo. The Calgary Sun first reported the matchup, adding that the event will likely be headlined by the Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson light-heavyweight title fight.

Big Nog is coming off his gruesome kimura loss to Frank Mir at UFC 140 in December, a defeat that had many fans and pundits pleading for the legend’s retirement. Following that fight, Nogueira said he expected to return within nine months. Just seven months later, he’ll be taking one more kick at the cat against a tough striker in Kongo, who ate a first-round TKO loss against Mark Hunt in his last outing. Still, you can’t count either of these guys out (see: Nog vs. Schaub, Kongo vs. Barry). Are you happy to see Nogueira back in the Octagon? And who do you think will be left standing?

During last night’s episode of UFC Tonight on FUEL, reporter Ariel Helwani revealed that a middleweight meeting between Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman will headline UFC on FUEL 4 (July 11th, location TBA).

Weidman increased his perfect MMA record to 8-0 at UFC on FOX 2 in January with a unanimous decision win over Demian Maia. Munoz was scheduled to compete against Micchael Bisping at the same event, but had to withdraw due to elbow problems. Munoz is currently riding a four-fight win streak, most recently stopping Chris Leben at UFC 138.

As of now, the only other match reported for the 7/11 UFC on FUEL event is Brandon Vera vs. James Te-Huna.

The New UFC 145 Danavlog is a Triumph for Fans of Defeat

Dana White Fertittas Brock Lesnar Lorenzo Frank III MMA photos funny
(Apparently Lesnar was the only one who wasn’t a fan of Anderson Silva’s nude pictorial.)

Adhering to its usual formula and taking a look back at the locker room footage from the previous event, the newest edition of UFC President Dana White’s infamous vlog features an up close and personal look at the poor bastards who came up short at UFC on FUEL: Gustafsson vs. Silva. And Brian Stann. He’s simply too nice to not be around at all times.

After DW’s regular introduction, we are treated to the woeful words of Damacio Page, Damarques Johnson, and Thiago Silva, who all insist that they are “fine.” We know what that really means. But worse than “The Angel of Death,” worse even than “Darkness,” is the silent sorrow of Paulo Thiago, who stares on in disbelief when re-watching the final moments of his first round KO loss to Siyar Bahadurzada. Thiago has now lost three of his last four UFC contests, despite having the most badass day job of any UFC fighter ever. Chin up, Paulo, we know you’ll be back with a vengeance.

Check out the video after the jump.

Does anyone else kind of wish that Brian Stann was their dad, or at least their crazy, overweight uncle? The man has to be one of the classiest SOB’s in the sport today, to the point that even when he decides to kick your ass, he’ll still hold back when he feels you’ve had enough. When Alessio Sakara awakens from that coma, he should give Stann a hug for being such a gentleman.
