After Mark Hunt dropped Stefan Struve with a left hook last night in Japan during the featured heavyweight bout on the UFC on Fuel 8 card and just walked away with his hands raised, you may have thought that referee Herb Dean was premature in stepping in and stopping the bout. Well, you’d be wrong.

Turns out that while Struve was still conscious, Hunt had broken his jaw and was just bad-ass enough to know he had before anyone else did. Struve got on twitter last night and told followers, “Thanks for the support everybody, I wanted Herb to take the tooth out of my cheek and continue but then it turned out my jaw was broken..”

To make matters worse for the giant, the ambulance he took to the hospital from the arena did not have any pain killers. “45 minutes to the hospital without painkillers.. Man, please choke me out.. Jaw is hurting like crazy.. :(“ Struve tweeted.

Man, tweeting with a broken jaw and no pain killers – that guy is a straight soldier. Later in the night Struve tweeted the above X-Ray photo of his skull, featuring his cracked jaw.

Dana, get this man a twitter bonus!

Struve eventually got pain killers and was happily “tripping” when he let fans know that he’d be flying back to his home of Holland today and getting surgery to repair his jaw, asap. Another great job by Hunt, another demonstration of Herb Dean’s expert eyes in action and an amazing demonstration of communication skills and good humor in the face of adversity and pain displayed by the young Struve.

“I don’t know what happens in Japan, but makes me feel young again.” Wanderlei Silva returned to the scene of his many glorious crimes last night at UFC on Fuel 8, knocking out Brian Stann in the second round of their main event bout.

At the post-event press conference, a proud and happy Wanderlei reflected on his win, his career and looked towards an uncertain future. Wanderlei reigned supreme in the now defunct Japanese Pride Fighting Championships organization for years but had not fought in his adopted professional home since 2006.

“I’m happy to make a good fight. Brian Stann is a tough opponent…this victory is for my fans, who give support to mem” he continued at the post-presser.

“I don’t have words for how happy I am right now. This job is a tough job. After so many years of fighting, every time it is harder to do that.”

Stefan Struve Tweets X-Ray of Broken Jaw Following KO Loss to Mark Hunt

Going into UFC on Fuel 8 the expectation was that the co-main event between Stefan Struve and Mark Hunt was not going to go the distance. It didn’t.

The end came much later in the fight than many would have speculated, but when it did come it was pretty spectacular, as the 5’ 10” Hunt overcame the huge difference in height and laid out the seven foot tall Struve with a right, left combination.

After Struve fell to his back Hunt turned around and walked off. However, referee Herb Dean had not waved the fight off yet. After that brief bit of confusion Hunt turned back and was moving back in, but Dean waved it off.  Following the fight Struve tweeted the reason for Dean’s change in opinion on the stoppage:

The knockout was not only spectacular, it also earned Hunt a bit of extra cash as he took home “Knockout of the Night” honors for his effort.

The loss ended a four-fight winning streak for Struve and will most likely drop him from the UFC top ten rankings when the newest version is published in the next few days. Struve, being only 25-years-old, has plenty of time to learn to grow as a fighter if he uses this loss as a learning experience.

Struve really needs to work on using his height to his advantage, something he has not effectively done in his career.  If he can do that he should be able to make a run back up the heavyweight rankings.

For now, as Struve stated on twitter, it’s a long trip back to Holland where he will get his jaw looked at:

We will most likely get an idea some time next week on how long this injury will keep the now 25-6 fighter on the shelf.

To say that Hector Lombard‘s run in the UFC has been disappointing so far would be an understatement. After losing his second fight in just three contests for the promotion, one has to begin to wonder—what’s next for the former Bellator champ?

Most of us believe that Lombard still has that terrifying war-machine inside of him. The one who ran through the Bellator middleweight division like a hot knife through butter. We saw a glimpse of it in his fight against Rousimar Palhares. But he simply didn’t have it against Yushin Okami or Tim Boetsch.

If the UFC wants to continue to sell Lombard as a potential threat down the road for Anderson Silva, he’s going to need to step up, find the “old” Hector Lombard and start destroying people like he did during his five-plus-year unbeaten streak.

Here are three possible options for Hector Lombard going forward.

Wanderlei Silva turned back the clock at UFC on Fuel TV 8, knocking Brian Stann out in the second round of an all-out brawl.

The wild main event helped turn a mostly lackluster card into one of the most memorable ones in the early months of 2013.

In addition to the Fight of the Night between Silva and Stann, UFC on Fuel TV 8 featured an important heavyweight fight between Mark Hunt and Stefan Struve, which saw the much shorter Hunt beat Struve up in the striking department.

Although those two fights stole the show, there were some other pivotal matchups on the fight card.

Let’s take a look at what could be next for all the UFC on Fuel TV 8 competitors.

UFC on Fuel 8: Siyar’s Loss to Dong Hyun Kim Highlights Blackzilian Curse

Before Saturday night, the highly hyped Siyar Bahadurzada was riding a seven-fight winning streak.

Plus, the former Shooto welterweight champion was looking at a title run if he scored an exciting main-card win against Korean star Dong Hyun Kim at UFC on Fuel 8.

Unfortunately, the “Blackzilian curse” struck again.

In case you’re not familiar with the term, the Blackzilians are an MMA super-camp based in Florida who host many UFC fighters, including former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans.

But since the camp formed, it hasn’t really put together the best record.

In fact, the Blackzilians have lost more UFC bouts than they’ve won, with the most high-profile upsets coming from their two most prominent members—Evans and Alistair Overeem:

Siyar Bahadurzada: 1-1
• Rashad Evans: 2-2
• Alistair Overeem: 0-1
• Michael Johnson: 4-2
• Vitor Belfort: 1-1
• Ryan Jimmo: 1-1
• Matt Mitrione: 0-1
• Thiago Silva: 0-0 (1 NC)
• Melvin Guillard: 1-3
• Abel Trujillo: 1-0
• Jorge Santiago: 0-2
• Miguel Torres: 1-1

Note: All records only include fights in the UFC, starting from the period when each fighter joined the Blackzilians.

What’s more damning is the fact that many of these fighters boasted winning streaks before joining the camp.

For example, Overeem has suffered the most from his transition to Florida, as he saw his five-year, 12-fight winning streak come to an end against Antonio Silva—who ironically left the Blackzilians when “The Demolition Man” came knocking last year.

Clearly, something’s amiss here.

Is this just a result of the UFC being a much tougher place to win than the MMA regional circuit, or are the Blackzilians‘ elite members somehow suffering from an unexplainable curse?
