Noted Hype-Crusher Marcus Brimage to Welcome Irish Hype Train Conor McGregor at ‘UFC on FUEL 9?


(Truer words have never been spoken. YEAH, I SAID IT.) 

Although TUF 14 alum and noted Dragon Ball Z enthusiast Marcus Brimage might not be a name on everyone’s tongue at the moment, he is quickly gaining a reputation as the featherweight division’s greatest hype train derailer (?). An African American T.E Lawrence with better tumbling skills, if you will. In his past two contests, Brimage has thrown a wrench into the plans of such highly lauded 145ers as Maximo Blanco (who to be fair, had his hype at least partially deflated by Pat Healy in his previous fight) and Jimy Hettes. Clearly the UFC has recognized Brimage’s current position as a litmus test for future prospects, as he has recently been booked to take on Irish phenom and two-division Cage Warriors champion, Conor McGregor, in a featherweight bout at UFC on FUEL 9.

When we last caught up with McGregor, he had moved up to lightweight to secure his second championship belt via a spectacular KO of Ivan Buchinger. Currently sporting a 12-2 record that includes 11 (T)KO victories and 9 first round stoppages, McGregor has put together an eight fight win streak over the past two years.

The UFC will return to Sweden in April with UFC on Fuel TV 9, which is headlined by a light heavyweight fight between Alexander Gustafsson and Gegard Mousasi.

On Thursday, another potential main-card bout was added to the fight card in the form of a bantamweight matchup between Brad Pickett and Mike Easton.

Though both fighters are coming off losses, Pickett and Easton are widely considered top-10 bantamweights and will have a chance to return to 135-pound title contention against one another at UFC on Fuel TV 9.

At UFC 155, Pickett had a two-fight winning streak ended by a close-decision loss to Eddie Wineland. Likewise, Easton fell short on the scorecards in his most recent outing against Raphael Assuncao, suffering his first loss inside the Octagon.

UFC on Fuel TV 9 will be held at Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden on April 6.

Well you’ll be happy to know that “Gamebred” has in fact been brought over to the UFC and will be making his promotional debut at the lightweight-heavy UFC on FOX 7 card set for April 20th. Across the cage from Masvidal will be Tim Means, the 18-3 powerhouse who basically summed up the injury curse of 2012 when he was pulled from his UFC on FOX 5 fight with Abel Trujillo at the very last second for being KO’d by a sauna floor (Author’s note: By now, you’re likely attempting to compliment me on the clever wordplay displayed in this article’s title. Swedish sensation Alexander Gustafsson is going to put his six fight win streak and legit claim to #1 contender-ship in the light heavyweight division on the line against Gegard Mousasi April 6. The UFC just announced that the pair will headline UFC on FUEL TV 9 this spring.

Mousasi last lost in 2010 against Muhammed Lawal and is coming off of a submission win over Mike Kyle at the final Strikeforce event. Gustafsson won a decision over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in December.

If it wasn’t for his young age and the long line of people talking themselves into title shots against champion Jon Jones and the huge mess that has ensued, Gustafsson would likely already be considered worthy of challenging “Bones.” As it stands, Gustafsson has to keep on fighting and winning to earn his shot.

Mousasi is more of a hardcore fan cult favorite than household name – despite his impressive resume and skill set – so Gustafsson is taking a big risk in fighting the Dutchman. For Mousasi, this is a golden opportunity to leapfrog ahead of the entire UFC roster of light heavyweights and lay claim to a title shot should he beat Gustafsson.

Given that he’s said in the past that he’s suffered from lack of motivation, Mousasi is likely relishing the stakes in this bout for his career. Who do you got, nation?

It looks like the UFC is ready to return to Sweden.

Alexander Gustafsson will meet Gegard Mousasi in the headliner of a UFC on Fuel card in Gustafsson’s native land. It is confirmed by the UFC that the 205ers will fight April 6 at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm.

Mousasi is a Strikeforce import who recently took part on the final Strikeforce card. He easily defeated Mike Kyle via submission, thrusting him into the UFC.

Mousasi has long been considered the best light heavyweight not in the UFC. At 33-3-2, he rarely goes to decision and has defeated the likes of Renato Sobral, Mark Hunt, Ronaldo Souza and Melvin Manhoef.

With this fight, Mousasi takes on a certified top-five light heavyweight.

Gustafsson is a guy that many are touting as the next top contender to Jon Jones’ throne. His recent run in the UFC would definitely suggest he is ready for a title shot. The Swede is on a six-fight win streak right now, finishing four opponents along the way. His most recent wins have seen him beat Thiago Silva and MMA legend Mauricio Rua.

This fight will be interesting for several reasons. The first reason is because this is a very risky fight for Gustafsson. Should he lose, his ticket for a title shot will be as good as useless for the time being.

The second reason is because Gustafsson has relied upon his polished boxing skills in most fights. Here. he may not be the better boxer, as Mousasi has pro boxing experience and even contemplated on competing in the Olympics.

However, this fight has all the implications of being a fun fight. Both men are consistently fun to watch.

If and when this fight goes down, it should be a crowd pleaser. Let’s hope the injury bug stays away on this one.
