Francis Ngannou, The MMA Hour, Ariel Hewlani

Following his shocking release from the UFC, Francis Ngannou has finally responded. Facing heavy criticism from UFC president Dana White, Ngannou made a six-minute video minute thanking the fans and explaining his decision.

Notably, Francis Ngannou responded to White who claimed Ngannou was “scared” and no longer wanted to face the best fighters in the world. Join me as we play judge and jury between the UFC and Ngannou.

Trial 1: Francis Ngannou v Jon Jones

Jon Jones v Francis Ngannou would have been arguably the biggest fight in Heavyweight history, including the days of Brock Lesnar. This fight had seemingly been in the making since Ngannou earned the strap in March of 2021, but never came to fruition. White made it clear Jones was ready to fight anyone. That’s a subjective claim from the UFC’s president. When Ngannou was ready to go in late 2022 and Jones was in hot water after allegedly assaulting his wife. At that time, Jones was not “ready to fight anyone.”

Sure, in 2023, Ngannou is the one to blame for this fight never happening. The UFC clearly wanted this fight to happen for years, but the timing never worked out on both sides. In playing judge and jury on this one, both Jones and Ngannou deserve large amounts of blame, while the UFC takes a smaller cut. Ngannou also made it clear on his opinion between Jon Jones and Ciryl Gane.

“Undisputed means nothing.”

Those three ominous words are all Francis Ngannou needed to say on how he’s viewing the UFC’s upcoming Heavyweight championship. However, that feels a bit unfair as Ngannou could have taken the fight with Jones. It’s easy for Ngannou to say he would have beaten Jones, but until he steps into the octagon with him, the MMA world will never know.

Trial 2: Francis Ngannou v Fear

In short, no, Francis Ngannou is not scared. It’s preposterous to think that someone who grew up mining sand in Cameroon and fled to France is scared to step into an octagon and fight anyone with his fists. Dana White clearly has no shame, but should be embarrassed for claiming Ngannou is in any way “scared” to fight the best in the world. Ngannou made his opinion clear on how he felt about the UFC president’s comments.

“That sounds ridiculous. With all due respect, I have been calling for this fight for over two years and I have been waiting for this fight forever. I fought a guy on one knee- a major injury. And now, why would I be scared of them when I feel even more confident?”

I’m giving the clear win to Ngannou on this one. To believe Francis is scared to fight is ridiculous and Dana White should be embarrassed for claiming as such.

Trial 3: Francis Ngannou v Contract Negotiations

Now it’s time for the most important trial of them all: who is to blame between the UFC and Francis for the failed contract negotiations between the two parties? UFC fighters are not employers of the organization, but rather independent contractors. Dana White has stated on numerous occasions including his press conference last weekend “if you don’t want to be here, you don’t have to be here.” White also claimed he offered Francis Ngannou a deal that would have made him the highest-paid fighter in UFC heavyweight history, including Brock Lesnar. However, Ngannou made a statement on how money was not the only factor.

“For a contract that is supposed to be for an independent contractor, the UFC contract is very restrictive. So, there is not a lot to want or things you can do while under contract. [The UFC] decides for you. I signed my last contract in December 2017 and at the time I knew it was not a good contract, but I had to earn my position and become a champion to negotiate a new deal. That’s what I’ve been doing the past five years and I never complained about my previous contract. The only thing I wanted was to terminate that contract and earn a new deal. That’s called freedom.”

This one as well is a clear win for Francis Ngannou. White claiming “if you don’t want to be here, you don’t have to be here,” is a false statement when contracts prevent fighters from going elsewhere. Ngannou had to wait until his deal ran out, before the UFC finally granted his release.

As the UFC heavyweight champion and baddest man on the planet, Ngannou should have been treated like a king and been given freedom in his deal, even if that included boxing fights. Imagine if Ngannou fought Tyson Fury. That fight would have been as big as Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather and earned everyone involved, bucket-loads of cash. Had the UFC played their cards differently, Ngannou could have been one of the UFC’s biggest stars, with his patented one-punch power. Instead, Ngannou’s champion reign will largely be remembered as a what-if story, while the UFC will always have to acknowledge their failure to sign Francis to a deal.

Overall, while both sides are at fault, the UFC definitely is more to blame. Fighters deserve more rights in their contracts and the promotion shot themselves in the foot by letting Ngannou walk. In the end, the people who lose the most are the fans, who will now likely never see Ngannou fight Jon Jones. In a debacle of a situation by both sides, the UFC should be ashamed of how they handled Francis Ngannou’s contract negotiations.

Opinion | Fights To Make After UFC Fight Night: Strickland vs. Imavov

UFC Vegas 67UFC Vegas 67 kicked off 2023 for the UFC as we journey into what will undoubtedly be another fantastic year for Mixed Martial Arts. UFC Vegas 67

UFC Vegas 67 kicked off 2023 for the UFC as we journey into what will undoubtedly be another fantastic year for Mixed Martial Arts.

Sean Strickland and Nassourdine Imavov headlined the first event of the year, with the short-notice challenger making the most of his quick turn-around. In the bantamweight division, Umar Nurmagomedov more than lived up to the challenge of Raoni Barcelos, stoppage the Brazilian with a highlight reel KO.

With plenty of action occurring at UFC Vegas 67, let us take a look at what should come next for those who emerged victorious at the UFC Apex.

Sean Strickland

Middleweight contender, Sean Strickland made good of his short-notice opportunity after Kelvin Gastelum had to withdraw from the bout. Strickland scored a unanimous decision victory over France’s Nassourdine Imavov in the main event.

With most of his peers already scheduled to fight, I think Strickland may have to fight down in the rankings and with that, I would like to see him take on the man whom he replaced, Kelvin Gastelum.

Dan Ige

Dan Ige put his trademark power to good use when he finished Damon Jackson in the second round of their matchup. After snapping a three-fight losing streak ‘50K’ will look to build momentum in order to earn himself a shot at the featherweight title. I think he could seriously push himself into the conversation and up the rankings if he were to face 8th-ranked contender, Giga Chikadze.

Roman Kopylov

Roman Kopylov made it back-to-back victories since joining the UFC after he finished Soriano in the second round of their matchup. Every outing Koyplov seems to show an improved level of his striking ability and therefore I would like him to go against a competitor with more of a wrestling base. One man who certainly fits that bill is Australia’s Jacob Malkoun who will be looking to snap a two-fight skid on his return to the octagon.

Raquel Pennington

Raquel Pennington scored her 5th consecutive victory this past weekend when she got the nod from the judges, defeating Ketlen Viera via a split decision. Earning that number of victories should be enough for ‘Rocky’ to rematch against divisional champion, Amanda Nunes. Nunes defeated her in the pair’s first meeting via TKO at UFC 224.

Umar Nurmagomedov

A perfect 16-0 for Umar Nurmagomedov. The Dagestani landed a clean body kick and follow-up punch to become the first man to TKO Raoni Barcelos. Umar Nurmagomedov is the real deal if you didn’t believe it.  The 27-year-old called for a return to action as early as March, I have no problem with fast-tracking Umar to a title contention; that is why I would like to see him take on 3rd ranked contender, Merab Dvalishvili.

Fights To Make After UFC Vegas 67

Javid Basharat

Javid Basharat also extended his perfect unbeaten record as he handed Mateus Mendonca his first professional loss. Basharat scored his third victory this weekend at UFC Vegas 67 and therefore it seems now is the right time for him to begin taking on ranked contenders. What better place to start than by fighting the man he called for in his post-fight interview, Chris Gutierrez.

Abdul Razak Alhassan

In a battle of powerhouses, it was Abdul Razak Alhassan who emerged victorious against Claudio Ribeiro. I have no problem seeing Alhassan face as dangerous strikers as himself and that is why I would like to see him take on fellow power puncher, Brazil’s Bruno Silva.

Mateusz Rebecki

Mateusz Rebecki cruised to victory over a short-notice opponent, Nick Fiore this past weekend. Rebecki got the nod on the judge’s scorecards but somewhat disappointed some fans who expected him to breeze through his opponent early on in the bout.

It is clear for all to see that the Polish lightweight carries serious punching power. Therefore, I would like to see him take on fellow heavy-handed 155-er in Mike Davis.

Allan Nascimento

Allan Nascimento notched his 14th professional submission victory this past weekend in a flyweight battle of grappling wizards against, Carlos Hernandez.

Nascimento could arguably already have earned a shot against someone in the flyweight rankings but to secure that thought further, I would first like to see him take on another flyweight with whom he shared that card, Charles Johnson.

Dan Argueta

Dan Argueta controlled Nick Aguirre for nearly the entire duration of their bout as he cruised to a unanimous decision victory in the second bout of the evening. Argueta used his wrestling to control his opponent comfortably. Therefore, I would like to see how he would hold himself against a dangerous striker in ‘The Sniper’, Sean Woodson.

Charles Johnson

Charles Johnson opened the card for UFC Vegas 67 and kicked off 2023 for the promotion. Johnson made good of his opening slot when he dismissed the returning Jimmy Flick in the very first round of their matchup. A somewhat early stoppage won’t phase Johnson as he secured his first victory inside the promotion, let’s see if he could secure a second if he were to take on the aforementioned, Allan Nascimento.

Only a week after returning we shall be treated to the promotion’s first numbered event of the year as the UFC return to Brazil for UFC 283. Be sure to return next week to see whom we match up with the divisional champions and the remaining contenders competing on the card.

Do you agree or disagree with any of these choices? Let me know your thoughts on UFC Vegas 67 and share below how you would matchmake for the winners from the promotion’s first card of the year.

Umar Nurmagomedov

Undefeated bantamweight prospect Umar Nurmagomedov KO’d UFC veteran Raoni Barcelos in the first round at UFC Vegas 67.

Umar Nurmagomedov, the younger cousin of the legendary UFC lightweight Khabib, opened the main card of UFC Vegas 67. He took on Raoni Barcelos, a man who holds massive respect within the hardcore MMA fanbase.

The bout would begin a competitive affair. Nurmagomedov was unable to get his wrestling game going, but avoided the power shots of Barcelos for the most part. However, everything changed in the last minute of the first round. After missing a step in knee, Nurmagomedov threw a left hook, competently catching Barcelos off guard.

The Brazilian was out cold before he hit the mat, although Nurmagomedov still followed up with a straight shot to make sure. The young Dagestani then took to the mic to call out the 135lb division, issuing a challenge to the top 15 for March.

Opinion | Fights to make after UFC Fight Night: Cannonier vs. Strickland

UFC Vegas 66

UFC Vegas 66 concluded the year for the UFC with the promotion taking a break over the festive period and returning in mid-January. Middleweight contenders headlined the card as they looked to end their years on a high and set themselves up for a promising 2023.

For the final time this year, let us put on our matchmaking caps and suggest what could be next for the winners from UFC Vegas 66.

Jared Cannonier

Jared Cannonier etched out an extremely close decision victory in the main event of the evening. Two judges scoring the bout in his favor was enough to see the former title challenger secure a victory.

With a large portion of the top middleweight contenders either having recently fought or being scheduled to fight, Cannonier may have to look down the rankings for his next opponent. Next for Cannonier, I would like to see him take on a rising contender and undefeated UFC fighter, Dricus Du Plessis.

Arman Tsarukyan

Arman Tsarukyan took down one of the highly-rated new contenders in the lightweight division with his victory over Damir Ismagulov. Tsarukyan is a highly touted prospect himself and I would not be opposed to seeing him jump the ladder and fight one of the higher-ranked lightweights in the division. That is why for his next matchup I would like to see him take on former title contender, Michael Chandler.

Amir Albazi

Amir Albazi scored a late KO victory at UFC Vegas 66 to see off short-notice opponent Alessandro Costa. For his next matchup, I would like to see him take on the man one spot above him in the rankings at the time of writing, Matt Schnell.

Alex Caceres

Alex Caceres delivered a perfectly executed head kick to dispatch Julian Erosa inside the first round. I would like to see Caceres get a shot at someone in the rankings and who better than for him to take on the always-game 14th-ranked Edson Barboza?

Drew Dober

Drew Dober delivered dynamite in his final outing of 2022 as he knocked out fan-favorite Bobby Green. Dober himself made this call extremely easy for me when he asked for Jalin Turner, and I believe he should be granted his wish early in the new year.

Micha? Oleksiejczuk

Micha? Oleksiejczuk made quick work of Cody Brundage as he picked up his second finish since dropping down to middleweight. The Poland native called for Chris Curtis in his post-fight interview and similarly to Drew Dober that is a fight I can fully get behind.

Fights To Make Following UFC Vegas 66

Cory McKenna

Cory McKenna scored a decision victory over Cheyanne Vlismas in the 7th matchup of the evening. Two victories in 2022 to close out her year should see her earn a shot at someone with a number next to their name.  Next for McKenna, I would match her up against 13th-ranked strawweight, Emily Ducote.

Matthew Semelsberger

Matthew Semelsberger knocked down Jake Matthews three times in their bout en route to his unanimous decision victory at UFC Vegas 66. For his next fight, I would like to see him take on a man he shared the card with who will be looking to bounce back from a defeat in Bryan Battle.

Said Nurmagomedov

Said Nurmagomedov was able to secure a ninja choke over Saidyokub Kakhramanov after being dominated in the opening round of their UFC Vegas 66 matchup. Having just earnt a ranking himself it is time for him to attempt to ascend up the bantamweight table and therefore I would like to see him take on ‘El Guapo’, Chris Gutierrez.

Rafa Garcia

Rafa Garcia battled through a cut artery to secure himself a victory over Hayisaer Maheshate at UFC Vegas 66. Despite the bout being contested at a catchweight after Maheshate missed the 155-pound limit. I believe Garcia’s gutsy performance should earn him a crack at someone in the rankings. Dan Hooker currently sits 11th in the rankings and would make for a fascinating opponent for the 28-year-old.

Rinat Fakhretdinov

Rinat Fakhretdinov set a record for the most control time in a 3-round fight as he cruised to a decision victory over Bryan Battle. This man has all the makings to cause serious problems in the welterweight division. Given his dominant performance, I would like to see him too face someone in the rankings, and believe Li Jingliang would make for an excellent opponent.

Manel Kape

Manel Kape styled on David Dvorak and was unlucky to not secure a finish in the cards’ second bout of the evening. A threat from all areas Kape has looked better with every outing since signing with the UFC. 30-fight veteran Tim Elliot is without a scheduled matchup, and I feel would be a fine choice of an opponent as Kape looks to ascend the flyweight division in 2023.

Sergey Morozov

Sergey Morozov opened the card at UFC Vegas 66 and called upon his wrestling to secure a decision victory over Journey Newson. Back-to-back victories to close out 2022 for Morozov. Next for the Kazakhstan native should be Montel Jackson as the two men both look to etch themselves closer to a spot in the bantamweight rankings.

That concludes the final ‘fights to make column’ of 2022. As always be sure to let me know whether you agree or disagree with any of the matchups I have suggested. Leave your opinion in the comments below and also share what you thought of UFC Vegas 66 itself.

We shall return to play matchmaker in the new year following the promotions opening card which will see Nassourdine Imavov attempt to take down former title challenger, Kevin Gastelum.

Jared Cannonier

In the UFC’s final bout of the year, one-time middleweight title challenger Jared Cannonier returned to the Octagon for a high-stakes matchup with the always outspoken and often controversial Sean Strickland. Both fighters entered the bout looking to get back into the win column after Cannonier came up short in his lone title bid against Israel Adesanya while Strickland suffered a first-round knockout against newly crowned middleweight king Alex Pereira.

In the opening round, both fighters paced themselves, preparing for a potential five-round war. As Strickland attempted to establish his jab, Cannonier targeted the lead leg, landing heavy leg kicks throughout the first five minutes. Strickland scored a brief takedown after catching a body kick, from Cannonier, but the one-time title challenger was able to get back to his feet quickly. In the second round, Strickland began to open up a bit, establishing his jab and keeping just out of range of Cannonier’s attacks, but ‘The Killa Gorilla’ continued to beat on the leg of Strickland.

Strickland began to open up, frustrating Cannonier with his footwork. That trend continued through the majority of the fourth round until Cannonier landed a big left hand that got a smile out of Strickland. Going into the fifth and final round, total strikes were incredibly close with Strickland peppering Cannonier with jabs and solid combinations as ‘The Killa Gorilla’ looked for the one-hit knockout. With 10 seconds to go, both fighters emptied their gas tanks in a closely contested middleweight main event.

Official Result: Jared Cannonier def. Sean Strickland via split decision (49-46, 46-49, 49-46)

Opinion | Fights to make following UFC 282: Blachowicz vs. Ankalaev

UFC 282UFC 282 delivered for the most part a very enjoyable and entertaining card. UFC 282

UFC 282 delivered for the most part a very enjoyable and entertaining card. Ten finishes in the opening ten matchups had everything set nicely for the co-main and main event to send off the UFC’s final pay-per-view of the year on a high. However, as we should expect by now, this was never going to be the case. A controversial decision and a draw in the main event sank the ship on what ultimately could have been a fantastic card.

Although the final two matchups did not quite live up to expectations, there are still matches to be made following them. So let us review UFC 282 and see what lies next for those who emerged victorious on the night.

Jan Blachowicz & Magomed Ankalaev

It seems only right to pair these two gentlemen up once again following their draw in the main event of UFC 282. Provided both men have escaped from their bout with relatively tame injuries and are looking to return around a similar time let us see two of the top contenders in the division fight each other again to establish who should be up in contention for the next title shot.

Paddy Pimblett

Now like most of the MMA community, I feel it should be Jared Gordon I am matchmaking for next, as opposed to the now 4-0 UFC lightweight, Paddy Pimblett. However, the Scouse-star got the nod on the judges’ scorecards and therefore shall be moving forward with my matchmaking plans.

The former Cage Warriors champ should be taking a step up in competition next. Therefore, I would like to see Pimblett matched up with the No.10 ranked lightweight contender, Jalin Turner.

Santiago Ponzinibbio

Santiago Ponzinibbio looked well on his way to a decision defeat against Alex Morono. However, in the final round, ‘The Argentine Dagger’ landed a devastating right hand, quickly followed up with a flurry of strikes to claim a TKO victory.

I was a big fan of Ponzinibbio’s original opponent, Robbie Lawler, and therefore would have no complaints should the two be matched up once again.

Dricus Du Plessis

Dricus Du Plessis broke the hearts of many Darren Till fans when he locked in a rear-naked choke to submit the ‘Gorilla’ in the third round. Du Plessis remains undefeated in the promotion and has already established himself as a top contender in the middleweight division.

The South African called for a top-ten opponent next and he deserves nothing less. That is why for his next matchup I would like to see him take on 9th-ranked Jack Hermansson.

Ilia Topuria

In what was widely considered one of the most intriguing and high-level fights on the card, Georgia’s Ilia Topuria turned in an almost flawless display at UFC 282. There is no doubt in my mind that Topuria will contend for a featherweight title in the future, and I can imagine it to occur sooner rather than later. I believe he is deserving of a crack at the top five and therefore would like to see him take on fellow contender, Arnold Allen.

Fights To Make Following UFC 282

Raul Rosas Jr

The 18-year-old star boy delivered on his promotional debut as many had anticipated when he submitted Jay Perrin in the very first round. You can expect the UFC to take a slower approach with Rosas Jr given his age and allow him to grow inside the promotion. Brian Kelleher would make a good opponent for Rosas Jr as he aims to bounce back from a two-fight losing skid, both coming via submission.

Jairzinho Rozenstruik

‘Bigi Boy’ returned to winning ways after he delivered a blitzing 23-second knockout of Chris Daukaus. Having already fought many top contenders and fallen short, Rozenstruik finds himself in a bit of a peculiar position. However, there is one man who he has not fought, and would create fireworks should they fight – that man being Tai ‘Bam Bam’ Tuivasa.

Edmen Shabayzan

Similarly to ‘Bigi Boy,’ Edmen Shaybayzan returned to the winning column, snapping a three-fight losing streak. A highly touted prospect when he first joined the promotion, Shabayzan is looking to get his career back on track following his UFC 282 victory. Therefore, next for Edmen, I would like to see him take on Jacob Malkoun.

Chris Curtis

Chris Curtis emerged victorious in the battle of heavy hitters when he knocked out Joaquin Buckley in the second round of their UFC 282 prelim matchup. Four wins from five have landed Curtis just inside the top fifteen of the middleweight division. Given most of the contenders already have been scheduled for early 2023 should Curtis wish to continue his ascent up the middleweight rankings he should look to take on Brazil’s Andre Muniz.

Billy Quarantillo

Billy Quarantillo simply does not know how to be involved in a boring fight and this sentiment was fitting following his TKO victory over Alexander Hernandez. Next for Billy Q is a man who would bring the same type of fire that he does already. Nathaniel Wood looked excellent in his most recent outing, and I feel these two would match up extremely well.

TJ Brown

TJ Brown notched his tenth submission victory this past weekend at UFC 282 when he dispatched Erik Silva in the final round. Three victories in his last four outings have Brown finding some stronger form inside the promotion. For his next test, I would like to see him take on experienced featherweight, Andre Fili.

Cameron Saaiman

Another debutant and another victory, Cameron Saaiman extended his undefeated record to 7-0 this past weekend following his TKO victory over a short-notice opponent, Steven Koslow. Next for Saaiman, I would like to see him take on Chad Anheliger.

Be sure to share your thoughts on my selections and leave suggestions in the comments on whom you would like to see the winners from UFC 282 face next.

Jared Cannonier and Sean Strickland will close out 2022 for the UFC as the two middleweight contenders both look to return to winning ways and set themselves up for an exciting 2023.
