At UFC 142, lightweight Edson Barboza continued his rise as he knocked out Terry Etim with a heel kick.

Barboza is now 10-0 with three straight “Fight of the Night” bonuses. Last night’s knockout also earned Barboza a “Knockout of the Night” bonus.

Barboza has only been competing in MMA since 2009, but he is becoming one of the best young up-and-comers in the UFC today.

Barboza has excellent striking that’s reminiscent of featherweight champ Jose Aldo.

Seven of his victories have come by knockout. Barboza is also a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has one submission victory to his credit.

What really makes Barboza a threat, though, is his take down defense.

The UFC’s lightweight division is stacked with great wrestlers. From champion Frankie Edgar, to challengers Benson Henderson and Gray Maynard, the division is known for having some of the best wrestlers in the UFC.

If a fighter can’t get Barboza down and keep him there like Etim was unable to do, it could spell trouble for them.

Barboza is such a diverse striker and thus far has proven that unless you can take him out, the fight is going to go his way.

Barboza is an exciting fighter and one of, if not the best striker in the lightweight division.

His striking, great defense, and youth will make him a big threat in the division and possibly a champion in the near future.

In the welterweight division, few notable contenders remain, though, Erick Silva has already been shown to be a fighter who wields some very serious potential.

Last night at UFC 142, Silva looked to take home his second victory inside the Octagon when the Brazilian wilted Carlo Prater with strikes, seemingly earning the first-round TKO win.

However, veteran referee Mario Yamasaki deemed the blows illegal and disqualified Silva in the process. The controversial ending has caught the ire of the fans and media alike, but regardless of the outcome, Silva has shown that he is a very real threat in the 170-pound class.

Chael Sonnen Says Anderson Silva Conspired To Have Him Face Mark Munoz Instead Of Facing Either Fighter

For UFC middleweights Chael Sonnen and Mark Munoz, their upcoming bout at UFC on FOX 2 at the end of the month in Chicago, is nothing more than two two competitors out to prove they are the best. Despite their amicable relationship both agree that it’s just business with the winner moving on to fight Anders Silva for the UFC title.

Sonnen, though, blames Silva and his manager Ed Soares, for pitting him against Munoz saying that ‘The Spider’ wanted nothing to do with either fighter so instead worked behind the scenes to get them to fight each other.

Oh Chael.

On Saturday night at UFC 142, Yuri Alcantara made his second appearance inside the Octagon, earning an impressive unanimous decision victory over the incredibly tough Michihiro Omigawa.

In the first round, Alcantara rocked Omigawa with a spinning back elbow, but he found himself unable to finish the fight.

Then, in the waning seconds of the first round, Alcantara locked in an armbar on Omigawa, and although it appeared at first that he had tapped, the ref said no, and the fight continued to the second round.

For the rest of the fight Alcantara controlled Omigawa, and he finished the fight with a 30-27 score on two of the judges’ scorecards and a 29-28 on the third.

Alcantara is now 2-0 inside the Octagon, and he is on a 13-fight winning streak, with an overall record of 27-3 with 23 finishes.

Alcantara could become a force in the featherweight division, but who should he fight next?

If the UFC wants to bring him along slowly, they could give him someone from season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter, such as Marcus Brimage or Bryan Caraway.

If they’d like to bring him along a little more quickly, perhaps the winner of The Ultimate Fighter, Diego Brandao, would make a good matchup to see which of these bright prospects is ready to take the next step.

Other options could include the winner or loser of the upcoming Leonard Garcia vs. Tiequan Zhang fight at UFC 144.

There are an incredible number of potential matchups for Alcantara and for all of the other featherweights in the division.

The featherweight division is looking bright early on in 2012, and there are a number of prospects who will be looking to make the leap to the next level.

Last night, Jose Aldo asserted his claim as the best featherweight fighter in the world when he knocked out the previously undefeated Chad Mendes.

Aldo defended his crown with a vicious knee, followed up by some ground-and-pound blows which cinched the first round finish.

Come February, Benson Henderson will vie for Frankie Edgar’s lightweight title. Since notable opposition in the 145-pound class is wanting, the possibility for Aldo to move to 155 pounds is not without reason.

Should Henderson emerge victorious, he could soon be welcoming the Brazilian dynamo into the division.
