What can anyone say about Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold at this point in his career that has not already been said?

Not a whole lot of love might be directed at Rockhold as far as his expected win over Keith Jardine goes, but the choice to have Jardine step in for Tim Kennedy was not Rockhold’s fault.

Injuries happen as part of the sport, and by now, it should be the norm that we’ll hear something about fights getting modified and scratched due to injuries, so the Rockhold-Kennedy change to Rockhold-Jardine is not a big enough deal to distract anyone from the improvements Rockhold has made since beating Jacare Souza in September 2011.

However, nothing makes sense outside of a bout with Kennedy, who not only defeated Melvin Manhoef, but also did the seemingly impossible and defeated Robbie Lawler.

Seriously speaking, Rockhold does not have many more tests ahead of him in Strikeforce, aside from Kennedy, unless Robbie Lawler blasts through his next few foes.

Nonetheless, Rockhold should recognize that while he may not have many contenders left, he still does have some.

Kennedy is an all-around skilled fighter who lands heavy blows standing up, presents a very strong submission game on the ground and offers a sound mix of heart, grit, cardio and the ability to set a pace with which most middleweights cannot contend.

Rockhold needs that sort of challenge now while he still has the opportunity to test himself, because without it, how long can he hope to survive in the UFC?

UFC on FX 1 will usher in the first official card to air on the FX channel as per the deal with Fox, and is headlined by a lightweight showdown between “The Young Assassin” Melvin Guillard and Jim Miller (pictured, top, orange trunks).

While the card looks like a fantastic display of free fights and a brilliant choice for all fight fans and observers to enjoy, the inner MMA nerd and would-be pundit in most of us is still forced to live with one crushing detail: Some of these guys are in danger of being served their walking papers with a loss this Friday night in Tennessee.

Luckily, the list is not a very long one (actually, there are only three surefire ones, with two that might or might not get the boot with a loss).

For your viewing pleasure and heart-ripping entertainment, here are five of the men fighting for their jobs at UFC on FX: Guillard vs. Miller this Friday night!

(Don’t get your hopes up; Guillard is not on the list.)

Nashville is one heck of a town. It is the official country music hotspot in the United States and, like many other American cities, it loves a good fight.

I badly wanted to attend this event. However, due to work obligations, I am forced to watch on television like most other fans.

I am not complaining, of course, but it would have been amazing to have been there. Not only is a UFC event an awesome spectacle, but Nashville itself is a great city for such a sporting affair.

The fight takes place at Bridgestone Arena. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Nashville, Tennessee, this arena has one of the best locations of any venue in the United States.

The arena is located in the heart of the city, and it is literally in the middle of the music and bar scene on Broadway. And because it is in the great state of Tennessee, a person can grab a ticket at the last minute from those kind gentleman who like to help a person out when they need to make a purchase en route to the event.

Friday’s UFC on FX  event will mark the first of its kind to appear on the Fox-owned channel. Fox and Fuel will also air fights throughout the year that are part of the seven-year contract between the UFC and the Fox family of networks.

The UFC is pulling no punches with its first FX card. The evening features UFC fan-favorite fighters such as Melvin Guillard, Pat Barry, Duane “Bang” Ludwig and Jorge Rivera.

Music City is always ready for a good time, and the when the UFC comes to town, the atmosphere will be electric and the fans will be rabid with anticipation.

It is safe to say to Friday, January 20, 2012 will be night to remember.

Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine Live Results and Analysis

If there was ever a time to test the legitimacy of Luke Rockhold, let alone his claim to be the undisputed Strikeforce middleweight champion, tonight is the night he will be greatly tested.

At least, that’s how some fans would like to claim to see it, but Keith Jardine sees the Strikeforce middleweight title bout, the first mainstream MMA title fight of 2012, in a much different light.

As a matter of fact, “The Dean of Mean” sees the main event as an opportunity to silence some haters, make a successful middleweight debut, and win the Strikeforce middleweight title—all in one night. Rockhold, however, is not going to be anything less than a stiff challenge for the former UFC veteran.

Speaking of UFC veterans, Robbie Lawler is back in action and ready to expose the wild man in Russian-born Chechen striker Adlan Amagov, but after two straight losses under the Strikeforce banner, to Jacare Souza and Tim Kennedy, many question if Lawler still can regain his old touch.

Amagov has so far been unbeaten in the Strikeforce cage, but the 9-1-1 fighter brings plenty of promise and an exciting style to the cage. So to say Lawler is in for a pretty difficult ride is an understatement.

Finally, Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal is back in action after a vicious KO of Roger Gracie, but while he will greatly test Lorenz “The Monsoon” Larkin in certain aspects of their light heavyweight bout, Mo has not faced a strong striker the caliber of Larkin.

Needless to say, the stylistic clash should make for one of the more appropriate ways to ring in the 2012 MMA year.

With all this, plus Tarec Saffiedine vs. Tyler Stinson and more, this is your live (blog) coverage of Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine, and make no mistake about it folks, we’re not stopping until the last shot lands here tonight!

MMA Regulation: What Needs to Happen to Get the Sport Legalized in New York

It is 2012 and yet it is still impossible to see live mixed martial arts in Madison Square Garden.  There seems to be some kind of oddity in that.

For a long time, MMA has faced opposition from New York about the legalization of the sport.

It certainly was head-scratching.  Here was a way for a state in the middle of a bad economy to generate serious income for its constituents and, at the same time, become a destination mecca for one of the biggest growing sports in the world.

It seemed like a no-brainer.

And then it was revealed that some of those who were voting against the sport were doing so because of pressure from the culinary union.  They have even stated that the UFC is homophobic.

It’s a bit ridiculous considering that the UFC is so global that being homophobic would only remove clientele, but it shows that unless the UFC and MMA have a lot of things to overcome.

So what is it going to take for MMA to become legal in New York?

Pressure and a lot of media attention.

In the history of most legal cases it comes down to interest groups.  The culinary union obviously most hold some serious leverage with the New York legislature.

The problem for them is they only have so much.  If enough New Yorkers and journalists alert people to what is going on and demand to see MMA legalized it will happen.

And that is because politicians are only friendly to those that help them stay in power.  The culinary has some power, but if the very people who keep those politicians in office show anger over the lack of MMA fights in their state then it will change.

So for once MMA fans have to find the time and energy to do what seems to come natural to them.

They have to complain.

Except this time they have to put that aggression towards those that they elected to serve them.  That might mean writing a letter or making a phone call, but it shouldn’t be an e-mail.

A letter or a phone call shows that the person spent time on that task and that task alone to make sure it conveyed their feelings.

The other thing that fans can do is call their local media news outlets.  If enough people demand a story, the media will deliver because it will mean either ratings or papers bought.

Fans have the power with their vote and their dollar.  All they need to do is flex it and MMA will be legal before the year is out.

It is the single greatest thing about America.  Democracy.

Now we just need to see it take place in the very heart of the nation.

We just need to see New York legalize MMA.
