Tom Lawlor Goes Off On USADA’s Recent Issues

‘Filthy’ is sick and tired of USADA. Does he have a point?

The post Tom Lawlor Goes Off On USADA’s Recent Issues appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

UFC veteran Tom Lawlor was shockingly released by the promotion last week. Now it’s time Lawlor goes off on USADA.

The news was a shock due to the fact that Lawlor had served one year and 10 months of a USADA suspension. Lawlor’s release left him in an uncertain position in terms of his career.

Be that as it may, “Filthy” isn’t necessarily taking the news that hard. He recently told Luke Thomas on this week’s “The MMA Hour” that he’s looking forward to new opportunities:

“You mentioned me having some difficult news lately, but I’m not choosing to look at it that way, I’m choosing to look at it as opening the door to many other opportunities that hopefully come my way. I was with the UFC for a long time, and as you mentioned, I had some difficult news, I was let go one week ago today. [It was] some pretty interesting, shocking news to me at least.”

Lawlor then opened up on the reasons he was released, speculating it was due to his age:

“I think it was a combination of [the UFC] getting rid of guys and my age and having not fought in years. It’s unfortunate that the UFC has become such a large company that they don’t look at things on an individual basis, but that’s part of the game I guess, and part of the entertainment business. I just kind of have to take it and roll with it as it goes.”

USADA Woes

“Filthy” then opened up on his USADA failure, noting that he had been tested many times since and passed each time:

“I was kind of shocked as I had asked previously for my release when I was given my USADA suspension, and believe me when I tell you that I did not intend to ingest any sort of ostarine or any performance-enhancing drug. I’m all-natural and I’ve been tested many times since then and passed all of them.”

Lawlor said he was glad to be out of the USADA testing pool due to its recent track record of being highly unfair:

“I am, however, happy to be out of the USADA testing pool. I don’t have to let them know where I am at all times and wonder about that. Those of you who [are aware of] Josh Barnett’s situation or kept abreast of that can kind of understand that not everything is fair when it comes to USADA and the UFC.”

USADA was supposed to clean up the UFC, and in theory, it has. But Lawlor said their banned substance list is managed lazily, resulting in fighters being suspended:

“Idealistically, it is [a good thing]. However, in execution, I think a lot of things are slipping through the cracks and I think they have done a lot of things wrong.

“The banned substance list is basically just a list of substances that they don’t want to test, that they don’t want to see in USADA sanctioning. Basically, anything gets put on that list. We get e-mails from USADA, there have been alerts, there has been a ton of information out there about ostarine being spiked in products. If it’s that prevalent, maybe you should do some studies on it instead of suspending people and ruining their lives for two years over it.”

Jon Jones Makes Interesting Claim About USADA Status

Jon Jones’ latest comments about his dealings with USADA

Jon Jones makes an interesting claim about how things are going for him while dealing with USADA and their drug testing program.

Jones failed an in-competition drug test for Turinabol at UFC 214 after he beat Daniel Cormier by third-round TKO in the main event in July of 2017 in Anaheim, California. This allowed him to regain the title. However, as a result of that failed drug test, he was stripped of the UFC light heavyweight title. He was also removed from the official UFC rankings.

If you recall, back in February, it was revealed that the CSAC revoked Jones’ MMA license and fined him $205,000. Many considered that this hearing that would determine Jones’ fate as a result of this drug test. Now, he’s waiting to hear the decision made by USADA.

Reality Of Situation

The former UFC light heavyweight champion has stayed quiet about the topic while letting his manager do all of the interviews. However, he recently commented on the ongoing situation where he clarified what a fan said. Which was if he was still in the testing pool.

Fans went on the USADA testing database last week where they noticed Jones hadn’t been tested at all in 2018. However, that all changed once a single test appeared in Q3 of 2018 for Jones. This led to speculation from fans that he removed himself from the pool like Brock Lesnar has done in the past.

By looking at the USADA rulebook, it states that anyone removing themselves from the program has to spend six months being tested before returning to the cage. Jones made it known on Twitter that he never left the testing pool.

Jon Jones Makes Comment

“Glad you enjoyed the few seconds of training footage I shared the other day. Just wanted to let everyone know, I never left the testing pool, not even for a day.”

USADA Tests Jon Jones For First Time Of 2018

Former light heavyweight champ Jon Jones has been tested by USADA for the first time of 2018.

Although his future is very much up in the air, former two-time light heavyweight champ Jon Jones has been tested by USADA for the first time in 2018.

Jones is still unable to compete due to his failed drug test in connection with July 2017’s UFC 214.

However, in a recent Instagram post published this week, “Bones” can be seen hitting the mitts in his garage. Jones was also noticeably bulkier in the post. Thislead some people to speculate his return is perhaps imminent.

View Jones’ Instagram post here:

USADA has listed Jones on the Athlete Test History Section of their official website. This is the first time Jones’ name has appeared on the site for 2018.

Could ‘Bones” Be Innocent?

Whether or not Jones’ first test of the year is any barometer of a return remains to be seen. The UFC’s Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky was the last representative to speak on the matter. He did so on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

“It would not make a lot of sense for an individual, a UFC athlete, especially a championship contender like Jon Jones who knew, ‘I’m tested quite regularly in this program’ – it would not make a lot of sense that that would be your drug of choice if you’re trying to cheat.

“I think it’s come out after the fact that USADA did another test on Jon a month or two months after his positive test, and he was negative. So that would be indicative that the prohibited substance entered his system sometime after July 7th or 8th, and that was likely a pretty small amount and that cleared his system pretty quickly.”

“Again, who knows where it plays out? But on the surface of things, at this point in the game with that type of information out there, it wouldn’t indicate intentional use. That could be wrong. I don’t know that definitively, and we’ll see how this plays out.”

As Jones continues to ride the sidelines MMA just keeps moving along. But adding’Bones’ the return of Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor makes for a heck of a nice trifecta.
