Usman Nurmagomedov

Rising Dagestani star, Usman Nurmagomedov, is reportedly set to take on Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire in a lightweight title fight at Bellator 288.

Usman Nurmagomedov is the younger cousin of all-time MMA great Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retired from the sport in 2020 with a perfect 29-0 record. Usman Nurmagomedov is set to follow in his kinsman’s footsteps, having already amassed an impressive 14-0 record, with four of these wins coming under the Bellator MMA banner. These wins have seen Usman move up the rankings, to the point where he now sits in the No.1 contender spot. However, it is worth noting that he is set to claim a victory over a currently ranked fighter.

According to a report via MMA Fight Universe, Usman Nurmagomedov is now set to take on the current Bellator MMA lightweight champion, Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire. The elder ‘Pitbull’ brother claimed 155lb gold in 2021, defeating Peter Queally in front of a hostile Irish crowd. He will now make his first title defense against the rising Dagestani prospect.

Tofiq Musayev will likely feel aggrieved that Usman Nurmagomedov was handed a title shot before he was

Many thought that it would be Tofiq Musayev who fought for the title next. The Azerbaijani recently made a successful Bellator debut, as he knocked out top contender Sindey Outlaw with a brutal right hook. Musayev also holds a victory over Patricky Freire, having picked up a decision win against the Brazilian veteran at Rizin 20.

It seems likely that Musayev will now face the winner of Patricky Freire vs. Usman Nurmagomedov.

It’s safe to say Joe Rogan was a little rusty after taking some time away from his UFC broadcast duties.

The MMA legend returned to his role of commentator and post-fight interviewer at UFC 272 but didn’t have a perfect evening on the mic. Rogan got a bit tongue-tied during his post-fight interview with surging bantamweight contender Usman Nurmagomedov, who is the cousin of UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov.

You can watch popular podcaster absolutely butcher the Nurmagomedov name below.

Joe Rogan Opted Against Working At UFC 271

The UFC commentator has found himself in hot water as of late for a couple of different reasons. Rogan first faced backlash for spreading what many believe to be COVID-19 misinformation on his show. More recently, Rogan was forced to apologize after a compilation of him using a racial slur appeared online.

Rogan was expected to be on commentary duty at UFC 271 but just a couple of days before the event it was claimed he could not work due to a “scheduling conflict.”

Post-fight, Dana White insisted that Rogan did not have a scheduling conflict and simply opted out of covering the event after being in the press for all the wrong reasons in the build-up to UFC 271.

Usman Nurmagomedov

Usman Nurmagomedov has found himself in some hot water in Moscow.

Usman, cousin to former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, fights under the Bellator banner, where he is an undefeated 14-0 lightweight contender. Of course, having the last name that he does, he has drawn serious attention in every fight, with his most recent bout being a rear-naked choke victory over Patrik Pietilä, at last month’s Bellator 269.

However, it seems that he will be having a hard time competing again in the immediate future following an incident in Moscow. According to a police statement obtained by Russian outlet VT and translated by The Sun, Nurmagomedov was apprehended by law enforcement following a situation that saw him and another individual involved in a hit-and-run with a police officer at an airport.

“The Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for Kaspiysk is looking for Kamal Khabibovich Idrisov, 10/29/1998, and Osman Magomednabievich Nurmagomedov, 04/17/1998, who hit a police officer at the airport checkpoint in a Toyota Camry,” the statement reads.

“The abovementioned persons flew to the Sheremetyevo airport – the source of RIA Novosti quoted a police orientation. They are suspected of having run over a police officer at the Airport checkpoint by car. Citizens were taken to the duty unit of the line unit. The issue of detention and placement in a temporary detention facility is being resolved.”

While the initial statement says that authorities were still seeking out Usman Nurmagomedov and Kamal Idrisov, it seems that this issue was resolved. The lightweight prospect posted to his Instagram Stories shortly after news broke of this situation, apparently saying that all is well.

“I don’t know who writes what,” Nurmagomedov wrote (translated via Google). “Please calm down already ?”

At the time of writing, this is really all that is known from this situation with Usman Nurmagomedov. There has been no statement from Bellator regarding the matter.

Usman Nurmagomedov

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has announced on social media that his undefeated cousin, Usman Nurmagomedov has signed a multi-fight, multi-year deal with Bellator.

“I want to announce my brother @usman_nurmagomedov has signed multi year deal with @bellatormma I just want to thank everyone for giving him this opportunity @bellatormma @dominance_mma and my big Brother @aliabdelaziz000, Khabib Nurmagomedov wrote on Instagram.

Bellator president Scott Coker was ecstatic to have brought such an exciting prospect with a strong family name to his roster.

“With today’s signing of Usman Nurmagomedov, we are making it clear that Bellator is home to the best fighters on the planet and an organization where the sport’s future stars are coming to compete,” Coker said.

“I am thrilled to have Usman join the promotion and he will be placed in an immediate position to showcase his skills and contend at 155-pounds. We hope to have him in action inside the Bellator cage by December or January.”

MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz previously talked up Usman as a “better” version of the UFC lightweight king Khabib, he said.

“The guy really to look out for right now, nobody knows him. It’s Usman Nurmagomedov, Khabib’s younger brother who’s fighting in Abu Dhabi this weekend.

“He’s 9-0, all finishes, he’s an absolute killer. He’s a muay thai specialist, and he’s Khabib’s brother, you understand? And also, if you have the same blood as Khabib, you have good wrestling. I’m telling you, he is actually a better version than Khabib. He is better than Khabib. And I’m telling you, people should watch out for him, he’s an absolute killer, he’s got the striking, he’s got the grappling, he’s got the jiu-jitsu, he’s got the look, he’s got the swagger.

Do you think Usman Nurmagomedov has the potential to be even better than his cousin Khabib Nurmagomedov?
