Quote of the Day: Josh Koscheck Does Not Wish GSP a Smooth Recovery

It’s been a while since we’ve heard Josh Koscheck make an offhand remark that has in turn reminded us of his decreasing necessity amongst the welterweight division. Most of us assumed his recent quiescence was possibly linked to an inability to digest the five course serving of humble pie that Georges St. Pierre stuffed down his throat (and eye socket) back at UFC 124, and it appears we were correct. In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Koscheck discussed everything from his upcoming UFC 143 fight with Mike Pierce to his dislike for the media and his thoughts on GSP’s recent injuries. And wouldn’t you know it, Koscheck doesn’t want the man who beat him twice to ever come back. Here’s what he had to say:

I’m interested in the outcome of the Diaz vs. Condit fight on Saturday night. Should be a good fight. Hopefully Georges is out for more than 10 months and they can make that Interim titleholder fight twice. Hopefully he never comes back. ACL surgeries can take a lot out of you. They say you truly don’t recover after those. I’ve had friends who have had those and they say they’re not the same so hopefully it equals out the playing field and we can get another crack at Georges. 

Let’s get this straight, you don’t want St. Pierre to return, so you can fight for a future shot against him? To quote Ignignokt, “your logic is flawless.”

Other things of note:

-Koscheck, like most people, find Helwani’s choice of footwear to be baffling.

-Kos is as committed to making amends with Canadian fans as Gina Carano is to deciding whether or not she’ll ever come back to us.

-When Pierce originally called him out, Koscheck thought it was a ploy by the UFC to find him an opponent, since the “upper echelon” of the division was tied up at the moment.

-Kos believes Pierce is a tough guy, but not a fight finisher, and is “good in every area, but not great.”

-After wishing GSP the worst of recoveries, Josh goes on to say that he and the welterweight champ “have always been cool,” and that outside of the cage, he could see the two of them hanging out. This notion is quickly reconsidered.

-Although he’s fully recovered from the broken orbital bone he sustained at UFC 124, the fight did leave him with a permanent numbness in his face that he says will remind him of GSP for the rest of his life. That, my friends, is true psychological warfare.

-Koscheck believes that he could have beaten Carlos Condit ”very easily,” and picks Diaz to do the same.

-After ranking Johny Hendricks>Jake Ellenberger>Diego Sanchez, Kos declares that rankings are “bullshit” and a product of “you press people that really don’t know too much about the sport and too much about what goes on.”

-Ariel takes offense to this statement, and says that Koscheck is high up on his list. Koscheck retorts, “What do you have [me at], 7, 8? You probably have Ingleburger and all of those other guys…*trails off*…yeah, it’s bullshit.”

So what have we learned today? Well, for starters, even if you think ranking systems are a bunch of crap, you STILL better have Koscheck in your top 4. Also, if you can’t beat ‘em, pray they suffer a career ending injury and swoop in.

As we all know, inspirational icon Tito Ortiz plans to call it a career after his next fight, or so he has claimed. He has also stated a desire for his final fight to take place on 4th of July weekend, and against either Forrest Griffin or Chuck Liddell. Talk about specific. And while Liddell can’t compete for obvious reasons (specifically, Jackrack commercials), Griffin has already come out in favor of a rubbermatch, and it seems the trilogy’s completion is all but inevitable at this point. On a recent episode of “Inside MMA,” Griffin received a surprise, but pre-recorded (for even more obvious reasons) video call-out from “The People’s Champ,” who all but begged Griffin for another rematch, as if FoGriff was somehow in charge of making those kinds of decisions:

Forrest, you know I deserve it, man. Step up. Let’s do this. It’s an awesome fight for you. I lost my last one. You lost your last one. Let’s do this — unless you’re scared!

Well, not to get technical Tito, but you’ve actually lost your last two, and six of your last eight. Join us after the jump for Forrest’s response.

Damn, Ronda Rousey Has Some Harsh Words for GSP [Video]

It seems a day rarely goes by in the MMA blogosphere that doesn’t yield another hilarious, if somewhat polarizing quote from Ronda Rousey. She’s made dick jokes about her colleagues, she’s threatened to kill an entire audience with her bare hands, and now it seems she’s honed in on none other than that B-boying sonofabitch, Georges St. Pierre. About half way through the above interview, Rousey asks the reporter who his favorite fighter is, after declaring that hers is “The Last Emperor” himself, Fedor Emelianenko. When he states that his is GSP, Ronda reacts with a classic “Oh no you di-int” face before letting her feelings about the current welterweight champ be known:

I think [fighting] is about finishing your opponent. It’s about entertainment. It’s not the Olympics; it’s not about coming home and bringing a metal and just getting the win. It’s about pulling more fans in and be entertaining, and I think that fighters that just try to win by points and come away with a win are actually bad for the sport.

If you never saw MMA before, and you walked in and you saw GSP and Koscheck, and all this jabbing out the whole time, it looks like a boring boxing match. And I don’t think you gain any fans with a fight like that. And so I really hope that Nick Diaz beats the crap out of him, because Nick Diaz is entertaining, and he’s an entertaining character in general. He might not be popular but I mean I can’t help but watch every video he puts out youtube. I think it’s funny as Hell. And every single one of his fights is a brawl. It’s not like a pitter pat match where afterwards he goes “Were friends, were all friends” and then okay let’s go home. I think that’s boring.

GSP was good for the sport for a while. He brought in some big sponsors like Gatorade and UnderArmor. But I think he’s done everything he can in a positive way and he needs to step aside and let Nick Diaz kick his ass.

DOES THIS WOMAN’S CRUELTY KNOW NO BOUNDS?!

Considering that she now spends her free time tossing around the Diaz brothers, we’re not exactly surprised by Ronda’s revelation, but damn if it doesn’t sting nonetheless. Whether you’re a GSP fan or a member of the 209, it’s hard to deny that GSP hasn’t exactly shown a lot of the killer instinct that made him a champion lately. Scratch that, we’re not touching this one with a twenty five centimeter pole. Discuss, Potato Nation.

So Ronda Rousey was on some program called Attack of the Show the other night, and the first thing we gotta say is daaaaaaammmnnnn. We’ve been hearing blasphemous claims of Ronda being a 5 at best around here as of late, and it’s time to squash this beef. Anyone who claims this woman is below a 7 must either email us a photo of their current or previous girlfriend, or send one to our Twitter or Facebook page. Otherwise…LIFETIME BAN.

Now that we’ve moved past her body, perhaps we can discuss her mind, as it is beginning to look like the witty, boisterous apparition that once inhabited Chael Sonnen has chosen Ronda as its next victim. Rousey, despite never fighting at bantamweight, is currently listed as a 4-to-1 favorite over current champ Meisha Tate, and the hype might just be getting to her head. When asked on how dangerous she saw herself, Rousey responded:

I think I am the most dangerous unarmed woman on the planet. [Looks to audience] I could literally kill every single person in this room with my bare hands if I had them one at a time. I wouldn’t do that, but I’m just saying, I could do it.

Look, it’s not that we doubt Ms. Rousey’s claims or anything, because just look at the bones, but does anyone think Rousey may be slightly overlooking Tate here? The woman has played the role of spoiler before, and if Ronda just happens to have an off night come March 3rd (she likely won’t), all these claims are really going to blow up in her face. Yes, we understand that we just used the phrase “blow up in her face.” Get your minds out of the gutter, Potato Nation.

Ronda goes on to describe her Twitter war with Christiane Santos, and drops another zinger when describing the photo of Gina Carano that Cyborg tweeted earlier this month, stating “…it was a Photoshopped picture of Gina Carano after they fought, which I’m sure is not the first time Cyborg has used Photoshop.”

Our fascination with this woman has officially reached a threat level of Peter Gabriel. There is no higher level.

Also of note from the interview, apparently Rousey was once jumped by a group of guys in a movie theater, and beat them up so badly that they later sued her for assault. Only in America. She then goes on to hip toss the show’s host in a very, very tight dress……I’m sorry, what were we talking about?

Oh yes, we were warning sweet, sweet Ronda to use caution, for hubris has its costs. That said, I’ve got her by armbar at 1:20 of round one.

CagePotato video correspondent Brian D’Souza braved the X-Gym in Rio De Janeiro recently and nabbed some interview time with the No. 1 contender to the UFC heavyweight title (and recent Playboy Mag fashion model) Junior dos Santos. First off, please accept our assurances that things went way better than when BDS tried to conversate in English with the middleweight champ this week. In fact, unless you’re just an out-and-out dick we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at dos Santos’ English, which appears to be coming along nicely. Secondly, no that’s not a weed shirt he’s wearing. We don’t think.

While no official date has yet been set for his shot at the 265-pound gold, dos Santos says he expects a March or April showdown with Cain Velasquez and is already working out down in Rio with the likes of the Nogueira brothers, Anderson Silva and Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante to get ready. Dos Santos and D’ Souza cover a number of topics in their short time together, including what Cigano thought of Velasquez’s recent win over Brock Lesnar. Sounds like he enjoyed it as much as the rest of us.

“That fight was very interesting,” says dos Santos with a chuckle. “Brock Lesnar tried to fight like a monster, like what he is. I think in my mind Cain was perfect, because he just waited (out) that initial pressure from Brock Lensar. (He) waited for the right moment to change the fight and win. Cain Velasquez was perfect in that fight.”
