Tatiana Suarez addresses withdrawal from UFC 298 fight through injury I won't be out for long

It is unclear whether or not Tatiana Suarez is injured and will fight at UFC 310. The US-born Suarez was booked for a title eliminator match later this year against Virna Jandiroba, but uncertainty has surrounded this fight.

Is Tatiana Suarez Injured?

The 33-year-old Tatiana Suarez was confirmed to be fighting Virna Jandiroba on December 7, in a match that would choose the next contender against reigning champion Zhang Weili. Yesterday a report came out saying that Suarez was injured, due to health issues, and she had to withdraw from the UFC 310 bout. But this was not confirmed by the UFC.

Once this news had gone public, on X, Suarez Tweeted: “I did not get injured. I’m curious where you heard this. Why would you put this out there?” But to add to the confusion, this Tweet was quickly deleted by the UFC athlete. Now, it is unclear what is happening to this fight.

Virna Jandiroba has moved forward assuming the bout is off. Yesterday, upon hearing the news, Brazil’s Jandiroba called out the division titleholder Zhang Weili for a match. On X, she Tweeted: “Hi [Zhang Weili], I’ve heard you wanna fight and my fight just got canceled. Let’s make this fight happen?!” China’s Zhang currently has no fights booked and does not have a clear contender in the weight class.

Carcará’ Virna Jandiroba is a dangerous submission grappler with a strong background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. With consecutive wins over Angela Hill, Marina Rodriguez, Lupita Godinez, and Amanda Lemos, she has earned her top-ranking position in this division.

For much of her career, Tatiana Suarez has been suffering from various injuries. She was a standout wrestler who also earned accolades in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Currently, she is unbeaten in MMA with ten bouts. Since making her debut in the UFC, though, she has only had seven bouts since 2016. In that time, five matches have been canceled due to injuries or illness.

Barring a surprise challenger for champion Zhang Weili, it appears that the UFC strawweight title won’t be on the line again in 2024. Barring a surprise challenger for champion Zhang Weili, it appears that the UFC strawweight title won’t be on the line again in 2024.

Having put in two bonus-worthy performances since making her long-awaited comeback in early 2023, Suarez was tipped by many to be next in line for Zhang, who last defended her belt opposite Yan Xiaonan at the milestone UFC 300 event this past April.

The Californian appeared to be in a two-horse race with Virna Jandiroba, whose submission of Amanda Lemos in a UFC Fight Night main event in the summer marked her fifth straight triumph.

Should recent reports come to fruition, however, neither woman has been given the assignment. Instead, they’ll have to battle one another for it.

According to Brazilian outlet Ag. Fight, a clash between the #1- and #3-ranked strawweight contenders is set to take place on the UFC 310 card at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena on December 7.

Suarez, Jandiroba Expected To Meet In Likely Title Eliminator At UFC 310

Should this bout be made official by the UFC, the final pay-per-view of 2024 will include high stakes at 115 pounds.

Suarez (10-0) has done what she can to make up for lost time after injuries kept her away from the cage for close to four years. After announcing her return with a submission win over Montana De La Rosa up at flyweight, the 33-year-old wrestling specialist forced a tap from Jéssica Andrade to put her immediately back into the strawweight title conversation.

Jandiroba (21-3), meanwhile, has found winning form following an inconsistent 3-3 start to life in the UFC. After defeats to Carla Esparza, Mackenzie Dern, and Amanda Ribas stalled her rise, the Brazilian has gone on her longest winning run on MMA’s biggest stage, outpointing Angela Hill, Marina Rodriguez, and Loopy Godinez before a bonus-winning submission of former title challenger Lemos in what marked her main event debut.

Suarez vs. Jandiroba joins a light heavyweight matchup between Anthony Smith and Dominick Reyes as the second fight reported for UFC 310 on Dec. 7.

Men’s Pound-For-Pound: No changes.

Women’s Pound-for-Pound: Jandiroba’s submission of Lemos in Saturday’s main event has advanced both her divisional and P4P ambitions. The Brazilian has debuted in the latter list at #13, one spot behind the climbing Kayla Harrison. The defeated Lemos, meanwhile, has dropped three positions to #15, while flyweight contender Maycee Barber has fallen out entirely.

Women’s Strawweight: At 115 pounds, Jandiroba finds herself two spots better off at #3 courtesy of her efforts at the Apex. Lemos has made way for that rise and now occupies her recent opponent’s formerly occupied #5 place.

UFC strawweight contender Virna Jandiroba wasn’t pleased to hear the less than positive take on women’s MMA from a fellow fighter.

Jandiroba recorded her biggest win to date in this past weekend’s UFC Fight Night main event at the Apex, submitting former title challenger Amanda Lemos to stake her claim for a first title shot.

The finish came by way of a gruesome armbar submission and marked Jandiroba’s fourth straight triumph inside the Octagon. She was widely praised in the aftermath of the impressive performance, but one peer who likely wasn’t watching is lightweight Loik Radzhabov.

“The Tajik Tank,” who was defeated on the preliminary card of Jandiroba’s main event, made some negative remarks about the women’s side of mixed martial arts last week, branding it a “break” to go to the bathroom during cards.

“Well, I don’t watch it, no matter who is fighting,” Radzhabov told Red Corner MMA. “Actually, when women fight, I take a break to get some snacks or go to the toilet.”

Jandiroba Tells Radzhabov To Get Help To ‘Overcome Issues’

During her post-fight press conference on Saturday night, Jandiroba reflected on her first headline victory in the UFC and reacted to Radzhabov’s comments about her and other women competing in MMA’s premier promotion.

In a brief response to the remarks, the Brazilian strawweight suggested Razhabov has “issues” that only a specialist would be able to solve.

“I’m not someone that is going to be able to help him, but maybe he needs to go get some analysis. You know, find a therapist that is going to help him overcome those issues that he has. There is probably something there that he needs to sort out and he is going to have to find a specialist to do it.”

Having fallen to 2-2 in the UFC courtesy of a decision setback at the hands of Trey Ogden on July 20, Radzhabov will hope to bounce back next time out to avoid a losing record inside the Octagon.

Jandiroba, meanwhile, appears to have her sights set on UFC gold following her win over a fellow Brazilian strawweight in Lemos. And “Carcara” is expecting her “weirdness” to provide a unique challenge for champion Zhang Weili.

Virna Jandiroba calls out UFC Champ Zhang Weili “I create problems for most people.”

Virna Jandiroba

The Brazilian athlete Virna Jandiroba was able to earn an impressive first-round submission victory in her most recent fight. Facing Amanda Lemos in this past weekend’s UFC main event, “Carcará” was able to add another victory to her impressive win streak. The 36-year-old then called for a title shot against Zhang Weili.

Virna Jandiroba vs. Amanda Lemos

UFC on ESPN 60 got Virna Jandiroba vs. Amanda Lemos as the main event on July 20, 2024. This was a top-ranked matchup in the women’s strawweight division. Both of these athletes were ranked in the top five. Lemos was a former title contender while Jandiroba was riding a three-fight win streak. Brazil’s Jandiroba was able to earn a second-round submission win with a slick armbar. The black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has won a whopping two-thirds of her fights by way of submission.

By extending her win streak to four in a row, Virna Jandiroba wants a crack at the strawweight champion Zhang Weili. China’s Zhang is a two-time UFC champion who has defeated notable fighters such as Carla Esparza, Joanna J?drzejczyk, Jéssica Andrade, and, most recently, Yan Xiaonan, among others.

In the post-fight press conference, Jandiroba said, “You never know the plans with the UFC, but I believe that this win, the way it went, especially not just beating, but submitting a former title contender like Amanda who is extremely tough, I think it should get me a title shot.” She added, “Within the weirdness of everything that I do, I think that I create problems for most people, and that’s how I can beat her.”

Tatiana Suarez is the likely next pick to challenge for the title against Zhang Weili. She has earned dominant wins over Jéssica Andrade and Montana De La Rosa. However, in February she withdrew from an event due to an injury. Injuries have plagued the career of the wrestling talent, forcing her to only have two matches in the past five years. If Suarez is out due to injury, Jandiroba may be next in line for a title shot.

Virna Jandiroba may have proven herself worthy of the next shot at UFC strawweight champion Zhang Weili thanks to a submission win over former title challenger Amanda Lemos in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night main event.

Jandiroba looked to utilize her grappling from the get-go, scoring an early takedown and battling with her fellow Brazilian for top position and submission attempts. “Carcara,” a grappling expert, managed to lock in an armbar and submit Lemos during round two.

“The fight went in the best scenario I could imagine,” Jandiroba said through a translator at the post-fight press conference. “I was for sure going to try to take it to the ground, and I was able to do it and find the submission.”

Virna Jandiroba Confident She Can Get Title Shot, Beat Zhang Weili After UFC Fight Night Main Event Win

Jandiroba, a former Invicta strawweight champion, has now won four straight and five of her last six fights. Entering this weekend’s UFC Fight Night at No. 5 in the strawweight rankings, there is a good chance she could be next in line for a title shot.

Jandiroba, in fact, called out Zhang in the Octagon following her victory. And at the post-fight conference, Jandiroba expressed how her unique fighting style can help lead her to a win — let alone a title fight — that plenty previously doubted could happen.

“My style’s a little different,” Jandiroba said. “The way that I grapple is a little strange. I know my wrestling is very effective, my jiu-jitsu is very good, but it’s not like you can say, ‘Oh, she’s like a proper wrestler.’ But I make it work.

“And within the weirdness of everything that I do, I think that I create problems for most people, and that’s how I can beat her. With the weirdness, that’s how I get my arm raised.”
