It turns out that Volkan Oezdemir will not be fighting at the upcoming UFC 227 pay-per-view event as originally scheduled and it’s a shame.

News broke on Thursday morning (July 19, 2018) after Ariel Helwani of ESPN.com reported the news on his official Twitter account as Oezdemir is out of his fight at this show due to an injury.

If you recall, he was expected to fight former UFC light heavyweight champion Shogun Rua at UFC Chile then got moved to fight Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 227 and as a result of the former title contender being pulled from this show, the UFC currently seeking a replacement for Gustafsson but the only problem is, with it being on somewhat short-notice, there is no safe bet that he will stay on the card if the promotion can’t find him a replacement as the longtime MMA journalist wrote the following on his official Twitter account:

“Volkan Oezdemir is out of UFC 227 due to injury. He was scheduled to face Alexander Gustafsson on Aug. 4. UFC currently seeking a replacement for Gustafsson but no guarantee he’ll remain on the card. More coming to ESPN shortly.”

Oezdemir was looking to get back in the win column and on track to another title shot as he suffered a second-round TKO loss against Daniel Cormier at UFC 220 in January but now will have to wait it out.

The UFC 227 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

This event will be headlined by a bantamweight title fight pitting champion TJ Dillashaw against Cody Garbrandt in a rematch. Here is the updated card for this upcoming show:

Champ T.J. Dillashaw vs. Cody Garbrandt – for bantamweight title
Champ Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo – for flyweight title
Alexander Gustafsson vs. TBA
J.J. Aldrich vs. Polyana Viana
Renato Moicano vs. Cub Swanson
Benito Lopez vs. Ricky Simon
Brett Johns vs. Pedro Munhoz
Irene Aldana vs. Bethe Correia
Kyung Ho Kang vs. Ricardo Ramos
Danielle Taylor vs. Weili Zhang
Sheymon Moraes vs. Matt Sayles
Alex Perez vs. Jose Torres
Wuliji Buren vs. Marlon Vera

Gustafsson: I’ve Fought Guys Who Hit ‘Way Harder’ Than Daniel Cormier

Alexander Gustafsson isn’t so hyped on Daniel Cormier’s knockout power.

Alexander Gustafsson isn’t exactly pumped about the current state of his light heavyweight division.

Thought to be the next rightful contender to champion Daniel Cormier’s throne, “The Mauler” saw a perceived title shot go up in smoke when it was granted to formerly surging challenger Volkan Oezdemir at January’s UFC 220. Cormier dismantled “No Time” with a quickness, and now Gustafsson will face Oezdemir at August 4’s UFC 227 for the expected top spot at 205 pounds.

Yet it won’t guarantee a shot at Cormier even if he does come out on top, because “DC” has teased granting former champ ‘Shogun’ Rua a shot if the Brazilian great can get past Anthony Smith at July 22’s UFC Hamburg before retiring after his heavyweight fight with Brock Lesnar. So Gustafsson may never get his rematch with “DC” after taking him to the limit in a narrow split decision loss at their classic first bout back in 2015.

He’s voiced his frustration with that on social media, but overall, “The Mauler” actually has high praise for his rival. After Cormier knocked out heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in the main event of last weekend’s UFC 226, Gustafsson expressed his respect for the new two-division champ to Luke Thomas on this week’s episode of The MMA Hour. He wasn’t sure who would win the closely-matched superfight but had a feeling it would be Cormier:

“He did great. I’m impressed. I was impressed by the way he finished Stipe and how he won the fight. I’m very impressed by the guy, he did great.

“I didn’t really have a prediction for that fight because I know it’s a very tough fight to predict, but I had a feeling [that ‘DC’ would win]. ‘DC’ is tough and he’s such a good athlete,”

And even though Gustafsson lost to Cormier at 205 pounds after nearly knocking him out with a hellacious knee, the Swedish star believes heavyweight is the best division for him, as he can eat and enjoy the benefit of his true power while not draining himself to make weight:

“I think he’s better at heavyweight than he is at light heavyweight. I think he’s stronger, he can eat and he doesn’t have to stress about the weight. I think he’ll do even better as a heavyweight. I had a feeling he’d win the fight, but just the way he finished [the fight] — it’s probably the wrong thing to say, but he made it look easy.”

The reason he believes that is because of his experience in fighting Cormier. When they fought at light heavyweight, Gustafsson didn’t believe he hit that hard, adding that he’s fought fighters who hit ‘way harder.’ To him, it was Cormier’s relentless will to keep pushing the pace, a characteristic Gustafsson believed to be the double champ’s best attribute:

“[Cormier’s punching power] wasn’t that bad [when we fought],” Gustafsson said. “I don’t remember him punching me that hard. I’ve been fighting guys that punch way harder, but he’s a very hard worker. He keeps pressuring and he keeps throwing punches. He’s really good with his wrestling and he doesn’t stop working in a fight — I think that’s his biggest strength.”

“The Mauler” hopes to move on and compete for the light heavyweight title soon, and believes an interim version should be created if not having Cormier vacate it outright if he’s going to fight at heavyweight next.

It will all depend on the result of his fight against Oezdemir, of course, so “The Mauler” still has work to do.

Do you want to see him get another shot at Cormier before the champ retires?

Alexander Gustafsson Says Cormier Should Vacate Light Heavyweight Title

Alexander Gustafsson wants the light heavyweight division freed up.

Daniel Cormier is a two-division UFC champion.

“DC” added the UFC heavyweight title to his collection to go along with his 205-pound title when he defeated Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 226 in Las Vegas this past weekend (Sat. July 7, 2018).

After the fight, Cormier was confronted by the returning Brock Lesnar inside the Octagon, who UFC President Dana White later confirmed will challenge “DC” next for the heavyweight title.

At the post-fight press conference, Cormier noted he’s only looking to take fights that will break the bank before his retirement date in early 2019 approaches. Unfortunately for the light heavyweight division, nobody at the weight class really gets Cormier’s wheels turning – well, except a puzzling match-up with former champion Shogun Rua.

A pivotal 205-pound match-up is set to go down at the UFC 227 pay-per-view (PPV) early next month in Los Angeles when Alexander Gustafsson faces Volkan Oezdemir.

Joining The MMA Hour with Luke Thomas today (Mon. July 9, 2018) Gustafsson said Cormier better drop the light heavyweight title, or he wants the UFC to make his fight with Oezdemir for the interim light heavyweight title (quotes via MMA Mania):

“They should do this fight for the interim title, it’s the No. 1 guy vs. the No. 2 guy,” Gustafsson said. “If ‘DC’ makes up his mind and wants to come down, we can fight for the real title.

“He better let that belt go, he can’t sit on his throne and decide who’s fighting and who’s not. When I beat Volkan I’ll be the number one guy and the next fight is for the belt, that’s it.”

Gustafsson has long voiced his frustrations with Cormier jumping up to heavyweight, knowing it will stall the progression of the 205-pound division as Cormier will likely be slow to defend his title – if not forego defending it at all.

He famously took Cormier to the limit in their classic five-round match-up in 2015, ultimately losing a razor-thin split decision in one of the toughest bouts of “DC’s” career. “The Mauler” has been out of action since his thrilling fifth-round knockout of Glover Teixeira at May 2017’s UFC Sweden, and currently has his hands full with former title challenger Oezdemir, who was dominated and finished by Cormier at January’s UFC 220.

Does the towering Swedish slugger have a good point about the sad state of the stagnating UFC light heavyweight division? Should Cormier defend the 205-pound title or vacate it?
