There was a subtle trepidation leading into Chael Sonnen’s long awaited grudge match with Wanderlei Silva.

Both men left the UFC in disgrace, with one failing a PED test and the other literally running away from one.

Considering Sonnen and Silva’s murky history when it comes to performance enhancing drugs, it should come as a relief that the New York State Athletic Commission announced that both men have passed their pre-fight drug tests, and the fight has been cleared to go for tomorrow night.

NYSAC representative Laz Benitez confirmed the news released a one-sentence statement today about the testing: “The (NYSAC) has completed out-of-competition testing for the Sonnen-Silva bout at (Bellator NYC) and looks forward to Saturday night.”

The details regarding when and where the tests occurred were not released.

However, at least the NYSAC is taking drug screening seriously l, especially considering the background of the two top-billed opponents.

Silva and Sonnen were last supposed to fight back at UFC 175. Before that, the two were scheduled to throw down at an Ultimate Fighter finale when the two coached alongside one another.

But it was the aftermath of their scheduled UFC 175 bout that continues to raise eyebrows amongst commissions nationwide. Sonnen tested positive for human growth hormones (HGH) and was nailed with a two-year suspension.

Silva ran from a drug test, eventually admitting to taking a banned diuretic. He was handed a three-year suspension.

While Sonnen has fought since then (losing to Tito Ortiz), Silva initially retired from MMA following the suspension, and hasn’t fought at all since 2013.

Mark your calendars because come June 24th a lot of high intensity fighting action is going to go down in Madison Square Garden , New York, N.Y. Bellator 180 has been eagerly awaited and now the wait is almost over. The one fight which has really got people talking is Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva. This one has been on the cards for a long time, especially ever since TUF Brazil 3 and it is now finally going to happen. This fight will be the main event of the night and will be telecasted on a pay per view basis.

This is the first time that Bellator MMA is coming to the iconic venue of Madison Square Garden and evidently, Bellator has put out a mouthwatering fight card which is most certainly worth this grand venue. Coming to the main fight in hand, Sonnen has been pretty vocal about his hunger to humiliate and inflict pain on Silva, but can he put his money where his mouth is? Or will Silva shut Sonnen’s mouth with his fists? Sonnen’s form has not been great, and he has not tasted victory since 2013. However, Silva himself has not been in tip top shape either. Silva also does not have a single victory to his name since 2013 when he was suspended for having failed a doping test. Sonnen might be the one with the huge hands, but it is actually Silva who is the true knockout artist. A staggering 30 of his 38 wins have been via knockouts.

Silva has not fought competitively in a long time and may be rusty right out of the gate, but Sonnen has not had a win in a long time and despite the facade he puts up, his confidence is not going to be over the moon. It is most certainly going to be an amazing fight for the fans, a long awaited “grudge match” so to speak, but if it comes time to make a prediction – We are going to have to go with Wanderlei Silva to win via a technical knockout.
