Our friends at RawVegas.tv were impressed with the media turnout at the WEC 52 open workouts today inside the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, but were not thrilled to ask the same questions as everyone else. So they decided to focus on a favorite topic this month, Arianny Celeste gracing the cover of the November issue of Playboy magazine and if WEC Ring Girl, Brittney Palmer could hold her own in an issue of Playboy. Wondering if there were any questions that Urijah Faber hasn’t been asked, RawVegas decided to ask him which question he was tired of hearing and which question he’d love to be asked. Japanese bantamweight fighter Takeya Mizugaki (13-4-2) is looking for his chance to vie for a title once again and is looking at opponent Urijah Faber as a big step in that direction.
Both men were to have met last August on the WEC 52 card but Faber was forced off the card due to an injury, eventually both men settled on the November date for the fight.
Mizugaki could have faced another opponent instead of waiting for “The California Kid” but the Japanese fighter didn’t want to waste this opportunity to improve his position within the division.
“When the fight in August was cancelled, I lost this ‘tension’ for the fight, so I didn’t want to fight the other fighter. Then we talked about the possibility of September, but when I found out it’s not going to be in September, I did think (about fighting someone else) for a while, but I decided to wait for the opportunity to fight Urijah…“I know a win over a big name fighter like Urijah would get me a step closer to the title shot, and of course, one more time, I want to challenge for that title.”
Mizugaki faced Miguel Torres in April of last year at WEC 40 for the WEC bantamweight title and lost the bout by unanimous decision.
WEC 52: Faber vs. Mizugaki is set for this Thursday, Nov. 11th, at The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will be shown live on the Versus network.
Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber (23-4) will make his bantamweight debut against Takeya Mizugaki this Thursday in the headliner for WEC 52.
It will be Faber’s last fight under the WEC before the promotion is absorbed by the UFC.

With the WEC/UFC merger in place, former UFC Lightweight, George Roop is back in the promotion fighting at the 145 division. Roop who is coming off a KO of the Night win over Chan Sung Jung with a high kick at WEC 51 that some are saying is a Knock Out of the Year contender, has agreed to fight Team Tompkins teammate Mark Hominick at UFC Fight Night 23: Fight for the Troops 2 on January 22nd.
MMAFix asked George Roop why he decided to fight his teammate, Hominick, and though he says, “nobody likes fighting a friend or teammate; hey this is the business,” Roop also adds that the winner of this fight should be the next contender at the Featherweight title. He admits “The Coach” Shawn Tompkins was not happy about the match up. But Roop has been fighting since 2006 and understands this is a necessary step toward becoming the Featherweight Champion, as is his ultimate goal. Because both Roop and Hominick can obviously not train together for this bout, Roop plans to primarily train atApex MMA in his hometown of Tucson, Arizona.
George Roop also notes that since news has broken about his match up with Hominick that forums are already flooded with comments that he is sure to lose this fight. Roop’s response to the forum critics: “Well, of course he’s gonna beat me, just like Leonard Garcia and just like Jung. I’m good at playing the underdog.”

World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight champion José Aldo (18-1) was offered a fight with former UFC lightweight #1 contender Kenny Florian, a match Aldo readily agreed to but it wasn’t something his management wanted.
André Pederneiras, leader of the team in Rio de Janeiro, spoke to Tatame.com revealing that it was his decision to turn down Florian. Which in the end, turned out better for Aldo, as the announcement was made that both the WEC and UFC would unite. The featherweight champ will now make his UFC debut against Josh Grispi in the co-main event of UFC 125 on Jan. 1st for the first ever UFC featherweight title.
A counter-offer was made with a fight between Aldo and Kenny Florian. They offered us this and I was the first to decline it. Aldo fighting Ultimate’s champion, the fourth in the world, is one thing. It’s the champion of the event fighting a champion of the same organization, but on the weight division above. It’s the same thing that Ultimate confronts champions of two different divisions of the event. But the counter-proposal was not interesting…
When they said it’d be Kenny Florian, it’s not that he’s not a tough guy, I think he’s an excellent athlete, but he’s coming from a bad result and, unfortunately for him, he was never Ultimate’s champion, and now he’s not even on the top 10 pound by pound, so I couldn’t see why this fight should happen. Who turned the proposal down was me, and nobody else. Aldo wanted to fight, but who turned it down was me because I understand this fight wouldn’t bring any benefit to him, independently that Kenny Florian is a great fighter or not.
If they have offered Sean Sherk, on a similar situation, maybe I’d have accepted, it was more likely. He was a guy coming from a win and he once was the champion of the event, so we declined the offer because of that. It wasn’t because we were afraid of the other guy, it was because I thought I wasn’t worth it. Junior is a very young guy and he’ll get heavier naturally, we don’t need to force anything. On the following week, it turned out he was UFC’s champion on the division below, so it was even better.

He was knocked out in his last appearance after opponent George Roop delivered a head kick in the second round. Since then Jung has stated he would not follow his “Korean Zombie” style ever again.
2007 ADCC World submission champion Yahya has also lost his last two bouts, having been dfeeated by Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 48 and Joseph Benavidez at WEC 45. Yahya, a former WEC bantamweight title contender had been on a three fight win streak, which included three straight “Submission of the Night” awards before the losses.
