Former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett is currently serving a suspension from mixed martial arts (MMA) competition after being flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), stemming from an out-of-competition test administered on December 9, 2016.

Just because Barnett can’t compete inside the Octagon, however, doesn’t mean he won’t be keeping busy by participating in other forms of competition. Wrestling Inc. reports that Barnett will be making his pro wrestling debut for a major American promotion at tonight’s Total Nonstop Action (TNA) tapings (Thursday, January 12, 2017) in Orlando, Florida.

The plan is to pair Barnett up with Bellator MMA competitor Bobby Lashley in an angle that sets up a Bellator fighter going one-one-one with a UFC fighter.

Barnett has some experience inside the pro wrestling squared circle, competing for Japanese organizations such as IWGP and IGF, where he defeated Lashley once before at the Tokyo Dome City Hall during a heavyweight championship tournament.

Aside from his in-ring competition, Barnett is also active in the world of pro wrestling as a commentator, working for New Japan Pro Wrestling on AXS for who he just wrapped up doing six weeks worth of voice over material in California.

The 39-year-old’s last Octagon appearance saw him take home a third round submission victory over Andrei Arlovski this past September, but if he is able to conjure up a nice career inside the wrestling ring, Barnett may have found himself a new occupation.

Fighter Channels His Inner Brock Lesnar with Series of Vicious Suplexes

Suplexes in pro wrestling are always fun to watch. A massive human being tossing another massive human being through the air offers an amazing sight and a tribute to what hard work and intense training can reap.

The sight is significantly rarer in MMA. But every once in a while, fans are blessed with a Kevin Randleman vs. Fedor Emelianenko or Rustam Khabilov vs. Vinc Pichel. They were treated again Saturday at Cage Combat 27 in Humble, Texas.

Check out the video, courtesy of photographer (and former UFC fighter) Mike Jackson (h/t Creators.co’s Jason Nawara):

One of the fighters (whose name is not known at this time), gets back clinch position, catches his foe off-balance as they roll off the cage and gains the leverage for a belly-to-back suplex. He maintains the hold after the throw, nails another as his opponent tries to explode back to a standing position, then gutwrenches another after that.

It was an impressive combination that was eerily similar to Brock Lesnar‘s signature WWE sequence:

While things are back to normal now, for one glorious night, Humble transformed into Suplex City.

Rising UFC star and recent Dancing With The Stars contestant Paige VanZant was interviewed by Maxim.com ahead of her main event fight on FOX against former Invicta FC Atomweight Champion “The Karate Hottie” Michelle Waterson this past Saturday night and seemed to indicate potential interest in doing some kind of business with WWE at some point in the future.

“The WWE is an amazing organization,” VanZant told Maxim prior to the UFC On FOX 22 show, which saw the Team Alpha Male member lose via submission to Waterson in the headline bout at the show at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. “I’m a UFC fighter right now, but my future has no limits. Can’t wait to see what I accomplish next.”

VanZant also revealed that she is a huge wrestling fan and that The Rock is her favorite wrestler.

During the discussion, VanZant also spoke about being a “huge wrestling fan,” pointing to current Hollywood A-lister Dwayne Johnson, who famously worked as a headliner during WWE’s “Attitude Era” boom period as The Rock, as her favorite pro wrestler.

“I am a huge wrestling fan,” VanZant said. “I would say The Rock is my favorite person to watch for obvious reasons.”

Former UFC and PRIDE star Gary “Big Daddy” Goodridge was recently interviewed by the folks at Hannibal TV and shared his candid view on the Octagon debut of former WWE Superstar CM Punk.

“You know what, I thought the UFC was just playing around with wrestling,” said Goodridge, who competed in the “Pioneer Era” of MMA. “Because wrestling has a big following, you know? I didn’t even know that until Brock [Lesnar] brought me up to this one here. I had no idea they had so many fans, so I thought UFC was playing with him a little bit. I think they’re probably going to stop now because CM Punk sucked ass.”

Goodridge continued, giving his breakdown on Punk’s loss to Mickey Gall, who fights Sage Northcutt this evening in the co-main event of the UFC On FOX 22 card from Sacramento, California.

“What happens when you fight — it’s quite different from professional wrestling — what happens when you fight sometimes you go out there and your brain just blanks. It’s a place you never want to go, and me I was always afraid of going out there and you just go blank. He trained for two years, and he goes out there and just goes blank, I mean he just lost everything. The hip and the hype got ahold of him. Many people say ‘Oh he’s a professional athlete it should of never got ahold of him’ but still, fighting for your life and fighting for showing up for a game, just playing — fighting and dancing are two different things. So when you go out there and you actually fight somebody, I can see how his mind went blank.”

“So yeah, I think he learned a lot but he didn’t have time to play. He needed to go out there and go easy into it, rather than (makes smashing movements with hands). That’s what happened to him. He needed to just go out there and jab, relax, then fight. He didn’t have that, so I think he squashed himself. Take your time, take some low-class match stuff, not fighting somebody like that right away. Relax, take your time.”

Apparently “The Game” not only has his eye on Conor McGregor, but fellow UFC mega-star Ronda Rousey as well.

WWE executive Paul “Triple H” Levesque spoke with UK’s Daily Star recently and was asked about the possibility of doing work with the female UFC superstar again in the future.

“I know that she’s is a massive fan. I know that she had a wonderful time when she worked with us in the past and I know we’ve talked about doing things in the future.”

Triple H added, “Right now [Ronda is] focused on unfinished things in the UFC,” Triple H said. “I know she has a lot of other projects in the work. But, never say never in the WWE – we have a great relationship and we’ll see where it goes.”

Rousey famously appeared alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in a segment with Triple H and his wife, fellow WWE executive and daughter of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, back at WrestleMania 31 in 2014.

Ronda Rousey makes her long-awaited Octagon return in the main event of UFC 207 on December 30th, as she challenges Amanda Nunes for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship. Join us here at MMANews.com on 12/30 for live round-by-round results coverage of the PPV.
