Mayhem Miller Explodes, Trashes Dana White During Twitter Rant

Sometimes it’s hard to tell when Jason “Mayhem” Miller is being serious and when he’s trying to elicit a reaction with the things he says or does.

He’s kind of like that high school friend who insults your sister until you’re boiling red, and then proceeds to say “just kidding!” and laughs it off. Miller is the one, after all, who not long ago was arrested after being found naked in a church he vandalized with a fire extinguisher.

On Monday, just moments after UFC president Dana White tweeted the latest message from his company about the recent news that MMA would not be legalized in New York for yet another year, Miller went on the offensive and seemed quite infuriated with his responses.

It’s unclear who these unnamed fighters are that have been fired that tried to suggest or start a fighter’s union, but Miller maintained his position in later tweets aimed at the UFC’s head honcho.

White has said in interviews in the past that he doesn’t believe a fighter’s union will ever happen, but mainly believes that’s because the fighters themselves aren’t necessarily in favor of it happening. It has nothing to do with the UFC shooting down the idea.

“There will never be a player’s union in fighting,” White said during an appearance at a conference in 2013. “Because you’re never going to have guys that make it to the top and have that small window of opportunity to make money that are going to give up any of their money for guys who might never make it. A player’s union would depend on the fighters—I don’t see it ever happening.”

The most inflammatory message, however, ended with Miller accusing the UFC of being a monopoly in the business of mixed martial arts.

White has battled against that idea as well in the past, and the promotion even underwent an investigation by the government in 2012 that was conducted by the Federal Trade Commission. The investigation concluded with the UFC having committed no violations in regards to being a monopoly in MMA.

“As far as this being a monopoly, the government came in and did a full blown investigation on us and whether we were a monopoly or not and the verdict ended up being no,” White stated in the same interview.

Miller wasn’t done with his UFC bashing, either, when fans began their responses to his tirade. He then accused the promotion of backing out from paying for knee surgery he required after his final fight with the organization.

The former UFC middleweight referenced the same injury when speaking to MMAFighting.com earlier this month saying that promotion dragged out the insurance process until his coverage lapsed and he was no longer covered by his plan.

Miller has never been one to hold his tongue for much of anything, and it appears his latest venomous rant was aimed directly at White and the UFC.

For his part, White seems to have ignored Miller’s tweets at least for now. Whether he chimes in at a future date when Miller’s name comes up again remains to be seen.

Paul Daley Has Assault Charges Dropped, Hopeful to Return to Bellator Soon

Paul Daley‘s long wait to return to the United States is almost over after charges against him in his home country of England were dropped recently.

The hard punching welterweight has been unable to travel to the United States while awaiting the outcome of alleged assault charges that were filed after a bar fight several months ago.

Now the good news is Daley has been cleared of all charges, and will be applying for his travel visa to return to the United States at any time.

“The case was thrown out, lack of evidence and contradicting witness accounts,” Daley said when speaking to Bleacher Report on Monday.  “I’m extremely happy.  Applying for my P-1 visa as we speak and hope to return to the USA and Bellator later this year.”

Daley was expected to take part in the last Bellator welterweight tournament that the promotion ran earlier this year, but when his legal entanglements arose he was forced out of the fights and back to the sideline.

While he was unable to travel to the United States, Daley did manage to stay busy picking up two wins fighting overseas.  He will have a third fight coming up on July 20 when he faces Lukasz Chlewicki in Cage Warriors 57 in England.

Assuming all goes well with that fight and his visa approval comes through without any holdups, Daley can resume his Bellator fighting career later this year.

Daley only got the chance to compete for Bellator one time after signing with the promotion last year. In that fight, Daley finished Rudy Bears with strikes midway through the first round.

Daley’s return to the welterweight division will be welcomed after injuries and delays have scrapped several high-profile fights lately. The issues include the upcoming welterweight tournament final (the one Daley was expected to take part in) when Douglas Lima suffered an injury in training, pushing back his scheduled fight against Ben Saunders.

It also doesn’t hurt Bellator that Daley has been cleared as they make a push into the television market in the United Kingdom. The Viacom-owned company recently started putting content on VIVA, a free television network in England, and signed several fighters from the area including former UFC fighter Paul Sass.

Then there is the intriguing matchup pitting Daley against perennial bad boy Jon Koppenhaver aka War Machine, who just recently returned to Bellator and picked up a win over Blas Avena.

Daley and War Machine were scheduled to face off in the first ever-televised Bellator fight on Spike TV in January before the British fighter was unable to travel to the United States.

Now with his legal issues cleared up, Daley will look to make his impact felt in the Bellator cage later this year.

Josh Burkman Staying Loyal to World Series of Fighting, Not Returning to UFC

It took Josh Burkman just 41 seconds to not only beat former UFC welterweight contender Jon Fitch, but to pull off one of the quickest and nastiest walk-off submissions that has ever been done in MMA history.

Burkman rushed forward following a quick punch that stunned his opponent, and when the opening came for a guillotine choke, he grabbed onto Fitch’s neck like a vice grip before falling to the mat. Fitch was unconscious seconds later, as Burkman rolled him over and stood proud over his fallen prey.

It was a huge win for the former Ultimate Fighter season two veteran, improving his record in World Series of Fighting to a perfect 3-0—two of those victories coming in the first round.

Following the fight, the natural question that came up to Burkman was about a possible return to the UFC, where he spent a big chunk of his career from 2005 to 2008.

Burkman was quite vocal during his time away from the promotion that he was working towards a return to the UFC and wanted to prove, after a multitude of mounting injuries kept him from fighting healthy for several years, that he could still compete against the best of the best in the welterweight division.

But with a new promotion pushing him towards a title shot in 2013, Burkman is happy right where he’s at, even if the UFC comes calling.

“I have a great relationship with Dana White, and my goal originally was to go back to the UFC, but when World Series of Fighting called me and said ‘hey Josh this is who we are, this is what we’re doing,’  I had a really good feeling about them and where it could take me,” Burkman recently told MMA’s Great Debate Radio on Bleacher Report.  “I believe I have a really unique situation with World Series of Fighting. On NBC Sports, free TV, and I’ve said before that I wanted to be a featured fighter and I think now I’ve earned that spot.”

Burkman‘s next fight for the promotion will be for the first ever World Series of Fighting welterweight belt later this year. He also knows he made a commitment to the organization when he signed his contract last year, and Burkman is nothing if not a man of his word.

“I have three fights left on my contract and I’m not going to try to get out of my contract. I’m going to fulfill my contract,” Burkman said.  “We’ll see what happens from there.”

Loyalty in MMA sometimes comes down to the right paycheck, but Burkman felt gratitude when World Series of Fighting invested in making him one of the marquee names on their roster a year ago.

That doesn’t mean the door is closed to a potential UFC return after the fights on Burkman‘s contract are finished.  If Burkman can win those final three fights on his current deal, he would be an enticing addition to the UFC’s welterweight division in 2014.

Burkman isn’t looking that far ahead right now. He’s got to take some time off to heal an ailing hand—after hurting it during the fight with Fitch—and prepare for a title shot later this year.

“I hurt my hand against Aaron Simpson. I re-injured it against Fitch so I’ve got to go see the orthopedist this week.  Probably be about six to eight weeks, so I need the time off anyways,” Burkman said.  “I believe with them behind me, and me behind them, we’re going to make World Series of Fighting one of the top organizations in the world.”
