Dana White on Sonnen: He Either Has the Biggest Balls on Earth, or He’s Crazy

It’s one thing for Chael Sonnen to make fun of Brazil from afar, but who would’ve thought he’d have the fortitude to actually travel there and do it in person?

It’s shocking even for “Uncle Chael.”

UFC President Dana White has done his best to separate himself from the middleweight contender’s antics, including walking around with a replica of the UFC title.

“Sir, when you say they, don’t involve us with what Chael says,” White told a reporter at the UFC 148 press conference. “I do not think that Chael has the real belt and that Chael is the real champion. That’s Chael talking.”

Chael has certainly done his share of talking. For nearly two years, he has blasted Anderson Silva and the entire country of Brazil with punch line after punch line. He has even made inappropriate jokes about Silva’s wife.

For fighters, there is typically a certain line that is never to be crossed, but Sonnen makes his own rules. He talks trash to whoever he wants, whenever he wants.

On Wednesday, White joined Jim Rome on “The Jungle” to shed more light on the intensity of the Silva and Sonnen rivalry.

“[Silva] hates Chael Sonnen. If you didn’t see the press conference yesterday in Brazil, I’ll tell you what man, this kid has either got the biggest balls on Earth or is the craziest guy I’ve ever met. We’re in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I’ve got a bunch of security for this guy to get him into the country. If you heard the stuff that he said sitting there in Brazil.

I’ve never been at a press conference where I’m looking out into the crowd and every time Chael Sonnen says something, I mean, people aren’t laughing, people aren’t —everybody was looking at Chael like they wanted to kill him down there. You want to talk about a guy the entire country hates this guy and wants to see him get beat.”

Luckily for Sonnen, the fight won’t be held in Brazil. An upcoming United Nations convention has forced the UFC to seek another venue.

The bout will now be held at UFC 148 in Las Vegas on July 7. In the states, White can rest easy knowing he won’t need Presidential-like security escorting Sonnen to and from the arena.

“[Sonnen] said, we went down there yesterday, and he’s sitting there and he says, ‘Yeah well you know, me and my friends back in America, we sit around and we talk about technology and medicine and everything else and all the great things. And then I see Anderson Silva and his friends down here playing in the mud.”

Phil Baroni on Steroids: ‘I Want to See the Strongest, Not the Cleanest’

If Phil Baroni had it his way, fighters could take all the steroids they want.

In an interview with fightsportasia.com, the former UFC middleweight gave a rather interesting take on the use of steroids in MMA.

“The New York Bad Ass” has never been one to shy away from saying exactly what’s on his mind, and he certainly didn’t hold back in this particular interview.

I want to see the best fighters. I want to see who is the strongest the best. Guys should be able to do whatever it takes to be the strongest. Getting choked and kicked in the head is really bad for you, worse than pot, TRT, or steroids. I don’t care who’s the cleanest, I wanna see the strongest, the fastest and the most gnarly fighters.

I don’t want to see who is the best at passing a drug test. Overeem isn’t the only guy taking [expletive]. He just got caught. I wanna see the baddest [expletive] going at it. That’s why Pride was the best. I wanna see a 205 [ripped] Wanderlei Silva kill dudes.

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Baroni would back steroid usage. He had a positive testing himself back in 2007 following a loss to Frank Shamrock at Strikeforce.

Fighters like Joe Riggs have often question whether or not the often inflated and toned Baroni uses steroids on a consistent basis.

“He always shows up in shape, looking shredded and puffed up, but I think he’ll be pharmaceutically enhanced, too,” Riggs said in an old interview with Cage Potato. “Just because he doesn’t test positive for steroids doesn’t mean he’s not on them right now.”

Rashad Evans on Jon Jones: ‘I Still Don’t Like Him, We’re Gonna Fight Again’

The battle is over, but the war is just beginning between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans.

After getting routed by his former teammate at UFC 145, Evans spoke with UFC analyst Karyn Bryant about his performance and a potential rematch.

“It sucked. I didn’t get the job done, but it’s a lesson, you learn, and it’s a fight business, and this is what happens sometimes. I just gotta do what I gotta do to come back stronger and keep my head up and bring some other good fights out there.”

There was certainly some good for Evans to take away from the fight. He was able to go the distance and land a few good shots that had Jones backpedaling out of the pocket.

With that said, Evans’ main objective was to leave with the UFC title, a feat he never came close to accomplishing.

“I don’t take no victory in [going five rounds]. I wanted to win the fight. It’s not winning the fight, so, a loss is a loss all the way through. I’m not gonna hang my head on it too much. I just got to go back into the gym and just get better.”

The fight is finally in the books, and Jones was declared the victor. Is there any hope of Jones and Evans hashing out their differences, or did fans only witness part one of an ongoing rivalry?

“I still don’t like him. He fought a good fight, and I got respect for him as a fighter, and I had respect for him as a fighter before. I still don’t…I’ll tell you what, we’re gonna fight again.”

Frank Mir: Alexander Gustafsson Tops List of Guys Who Can Beat Jon Jones

If forced to choose a fighter at 205 pounds with the best chance to defeat Jon Jones, Frank Mir would put his money on Alexander Gustafsson.

MMA:30’s Dave Farra recently spoke with the former UFC heavyweight champion about the UFC 145 main event, Dan Henderson’s chances against Jones and Gustafsson as a potential future contender.

When asked about Jones’ win over Evans, Mir said, “There were a few moments there when it looked like Rashad [Evans] might’ve done something, but for the most part, I think Jones pretty much shut him down and controlled the fight.”

“If you want to nullify a guy’s reach,” he said, “you gotta move in on him, close the gap and stay close, backing up and fighting at Jones’ distance, I don’t think anybody in the world can fight Jones at a far distance and come away effective. He just has too many weapons from the outside.”

Evans learned about those weapons the hard way, as he was completely picked apart for all 25 minutes of the championship bout.

The light heavyweight division was once considered the deepest in the sport, but Jones’ dominance is causing the once-stacked division to crumble.

It’s becoming harder and harder to find fresh contenders for the young phenom, despite him having only defended his belt three times.

At 41 years of age, MMA legend Dan Henderson will be the next light heavyweight to step up against Jones.

There is some hope in Henderson’s thunderous right hand and world-class wrestling. But overall, it seems like a long shot for the former Pride middleweight champion to get his hand raised.

“I think Henderson obviously has the grappling credentials to where he can close the distance,” Mir said. “I just wonder how he’s going to. I don’t think has ever been an explosively quick fighter.”

“He’s just very powerful,” Mir said. “If he hits you, he can take you out, but to be able to land that punch on someone with that much reach, and the youth and speed is on Jones’ side too. I think one of the quickest guys at 205 was Rashad, when he’s fresh, an explosively quick guy, and he had a hard time getting in on [Jones].”

Mauricio Rua, Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida and now Rashad Evans are all down for the count. If Henderson can’t beat Jones, who else is there?

“As far as names of whoever could possibly compete with Jones, I would put [Gustafsson] at the top of the list,” Mir said. “The guy is incredibly long and tall himself and just really strong.

“I didn’t get to grapple with him personally, but I’ve seen him get grabbed by a few guys that I’ve rolled with that I know have some pretty good strength and power and technique and Gustafsson, without even grimacing at his face, was pretty effortlessly able to throw them around. I was really impressed.”

Former Overeem Teammate Coenen: Calls Steroid Accusations True, More Dirt Coming

Marloes Coenen believes it could take more than the truth to set Alistair Overeem free.

In an appearance on Just Scrap Radio, the former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion sounded off on her former teammate Overeem, who was recently removed from the UFC 146 main event after failing his pre-fight drug test.

“If you do stuff like that and get caught, just like Alistair now, just suck it up and don’t complain about it. I think the truth will always come out. We know a lot of things about Alistair, a lot of negative things, but we never talked about it and knew that the truth would come out. More dirt will come up.”

Overeem, whose testosterone was more than double the regulatory limit, recently addressed the Nevada State Athletic Commission in a hearing held on Tuesday.

He blamed the positive testing on an anti-inflammatory medication prescribed to him by a doctor. According to Overeem, he aggravated an old rib injury training for his UFC title bout against Junior Dos Santos.

His manager Glenn Robinson revealed that Overeem decided to withdraw from the bout on Friday and “asked for a continuance to hear the case so he can prove he is a clean fighter.”

Coenen, who trained alongside Overeem during her stint at Golden Glory, doesn’t appear convinced by the statement released by the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion.

The most interesting part about Coenen’s interview is the fact that she alluded to more dirt possibly being unveiled in the Overeem investigation.

Could there be more facts surrounding the case that we have yet to be made aware of?

“Alistair will receive his punishment for what he has done, and we don’t have to deliver that to him because karma will come and get him.”

Sonnen Blasts Silva: ‘I Insulted Your Family and You Didn’t Do a Damn Thing’

It’s easy to see the ongoing feud between Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva is becoming a little too personal for comfort.

At the press conference for UFC 148, Sonnen didn’t back down from any of the previous remarks he’s made about Silva.

In front of the Brazilian media, the self-proclaimed “People’s Champ” blasted the reigning middleweight champion in one of the most tense press conference moments in UFC history.

“I don’t know man. This guy says the craziest things. He is surrounded by such “yes” men and it’s unbelievable that he actually thinks like that. He talks about his legacy. He is so close to the trees that he can’t see the forest.

Come to America and ask people what they think of him. I mean, this guy is the real deal, wow, he became the number one contender when he beat up the great Chris Leben. He then defended his belt against the great Patrick Cote and the amazing Thales Leites. What a star this guy is.

What about the fact that I called him out for six years. ‘He disrespected my family.’ Yes, I did, and what did you do about it? You didn’t do a damn thing, and you’re not going to do anything on July 7th.

Get your excuses ready now, Anderson. I told everybody the first time I fought him that our skills are not even close. I will destroy him, and I’m going to tell you again now, our skills are not even close. So go to your Ed Soares school of excuse making and get them handy because you are going to need them on July 7th.”

The rematch between Silva and Sonnen was originally slated to take place at UFC 147 in Brazil, but due to scheduling conflicts, it was moved back as the UFC 148 headliner in Las Vegas.

Throughout MMA history, we have all witnessed some pretty significant rivalries, but none have reached the personal depth of Silva and Sonnen.

There has always been an invisible line that fighters tend to never cross, but when it comes to Silva, Sonnen has consistently stomped all over the line.

As this bout inches closer, emotions will surely be running at an all-time high.

The emotions run a little deeper when a person’s family is involved, but this could all be a tactic by Sonnen in hopes of throwing Silva off his game.

Has Sonnen gone too far, or is he right in calling out the often dormant Silva?
