UFC’s Chael Sonnen: "It’s Hard to Deny That Anderson Silva Is the Best"

Chael Sonnen has turned over a new leaf.

The outspoken UFC middleweight contender has had a target on UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, as well as Silva’s teammates Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Lyoto Machida, since their title bout at UFC 119 last year.

However, during a UFC 136 conference call, Sonnen was asked his opinion on the Brazilian’s status in mixed martial arts, and he was much more respectful and complimentary than usual.

“It’s getting harder and harder to deny that he should be shown that appreciation,” Sonnen said.

“His wins and losses speak for themselves and the fact of the matter, whether I’d like to admit it or not, is he’s done a better job than anybody,” he said. “He’s done a better job than me, and he is the champion.”

Despite losing to “The Spider,” Sonnen was able to dominate and outwork Silva more than any other opponent before him. The bout was so competitive that an immediate rematch seems inevitable.

Sonnen is expected to face Brian Stann this weekend at UFC 136. That will likely determine the next challenger for Silva, and should Sonnen earn a victory, he will be rewarded with an anticipated rematch against the middleweight kingpin.

And although he might have slightly changed his perspective on Silva’s accomplishments, he doesn’t intend on holding back in the ring.

“I think his skills are vastly different. I think I could come down a lot and still be ahead of him. I also think he ducks and dodges opponents constantly,” he said.

“That doesn’t mean that I’m gonna quit poking my finger in his chest. But, at some point, I think fairness needs to kick in too, and I think you need to look at what he’s done and tip your hat to him a little bit.”

UFC on Versus 6 Fight Card: What Fight Should Everyone Be Excited For?

As we are merely hours away from UFC on Versus 6, the fight card is loaded with some intriguing fights that will likely have some significant impact on the fighters.

The one bout that most casual fans are looking forward to seeing is Dominick Cruz and Demetrious Johnson, yet the one matchup that seems to serve more purpose is a heavyweight bout featuring Pat Barry and Stefan Struve.

While the thought of witnessing two mismatched heavyweights could be exciting, there is more to consider when looking at both Barry and Struve’s status among the heavyweight division, and in the UFC.

Barry’s progress in the UFC has steadily improved, but it has not placed him anywhere near the top 10 of the division, where most fans would of expected him by now. Notable wins over respected veterans like Antoni Hardonk and Joey Beltran haven’t hurt him, but suffering losses to the likes of Mirko Cro Cop and Cheick Kongo have certainly affected his chances of obtaining a credible record inside the Octagon.

Stefan Struve is in a similar situation, as he too has suffered the misfortune of remaining inconsistent in the UFC.

Standing at 6’11”, with an 83″ reach, Struve is the tallest fighter in the UFC. He has also enjoyed some success earning victories over veterans Sean McCorkie and Paul Buentello, but he has not fared well when facing top heavyweight contenders like Roy Nelson and Junior dos Santos.

For a fighter who seemingly should have a considerable height and reach advantage over most of his opponents, Struve fails to utilize his reach and distance appropriately, which allows fighters to get inside of him and land strikes.

In their upcoming bout this weekend, a lot of pressure rides on Barry and Struve to come out with a win. A loss will likely spell the end of one fighter’s tenure, while the winner will still retain some value. With both fighters enduring a journeyman-like status thus far in their young careers, a victory will be very satisfying and significant.

Dominick Cruz Says He Is Open To Return to 145 Pounds

Most fans look at Dominick Cruz’s skills and abilities with high regard. Few give his opponents a chance of dethroning him, including Demetrious Johnson, who will challenge Cruz for the UFC bantamweight title this weekend at UFC on Versus.

Cruz dominates his opposition. He relies on his quickness, reflexes and unorthodox striking, which leaves many fans questioning the overall competition in his division and requesting that he move up to 145 pounds.

And Cruz might not necessarily rule out that possibility.

“I haven’t really thought about it too much,” Cruz said during a media conference call. “But I will say that I’m not going to turn down the opportunity [to fight for the featherweight title] if it comes up in the future.”

Like Cruz, fellow UFC champions Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre, and more recently Jon Jones, have faced the possibility of moving up another weight class. Unfortunately for Cruz, he resides in one of the UFC’s most stacked divisions and it isn’t unlikely he will move up anytime soon.

For fighters like Silva and St-Pierre, the talent pool in their respective divisions isn’t very deep. Along with their experience, they have earned recognition and established reputations as two of the top pound-for pound fighters in mixed martial arts.

And according to UFC vice president of community relations Reed Harris, who also participated in the conference call, Cruz has plenty of competition in his weight class to remain there for the foreseeable future.

“As these guys evolve and come up through the ranks, there will always be guys for [Cruz] to fight,” Harris said.

“We have guys moving from lightweight to featherweight and from featherweight to bantamweight, so there is always going to be competition for [Cruz and current 145-pound champion Jose Aldo.”

Cruz will look to continue establishing his own legacy against Johnson this weekend, live from the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Kenny Florian Plans on Being "Fitter, Faster, Sharper" Against Jose Aldo

Kenny Florian‘s previous attempts at challenging for a UFC title have been unsuccessful, but he believes that an intense and successful training camp will be a major contribution in his chance to defeat Jose Aldo.

Florian, who recently moved to 145 pounds, will meet Aldo in the co-main event at UFC 136. “Ken Flo” made a good impression in his debut and walked away with the win over Diego Nunes at UFC 130, ultimately earning the shot at Aldo.

In his blog on ESPN.com, Florian said he is confident in his training camp and preparation ahead of his bout against the Brazilian.

“I’ve just finished a month of training three times a day, six times a week, so it’s fair to say my body is in optimum condition right now,” he said.

“The amount of work I put in to each training camp has grown and grown and I’m always intent on outdoing my opponent.”

Florian’s has failed in his last two opportunities at challenging for the UFC lightweight title; therefore, he hopes his chances at featherweight will serve him better. Florian challenged Sean Sherk and BJ Penn, only to come up short against both champions, respectively.

Since then, Florian has evolved as a fighter and will look to utilize his overall skills in order to finally earn himself recognition as a title contender and wear a UFC title.

“Ultimately, the end goal for all fighters is to lift that UFC belt. That is the thing that drives us in training and forces us to become the best fighter we can possibly be,” he said.

“I know that I need to be fitter, faster, sharper and better than I have ever been before on Oct. 8. And that is exactly what I have been working towards for the past few months and years.”

According to Georges St-Pierre, Carlos Condit is the No.1 contender for the UFC welterweight title.

While it might not be the title bout fans had hoped for, St-Pierre believes he is facing the perennial contender at 170 pounds.

St-Pierre, who was a special guest on FOX Sports, spoke about his upcoming title bout and had nothing but praise for his opponent.

“Condit is very good. I truly believe he is the No.1 contender,” St-Pierre said.

“He’s beaten some of the best guys, a lot of the best guys he’s knocked them out cold, and he deserves a title shot.”

Condit was favoured over original opponent, Nick Diaz, after the Strikeforce welterweight champion failed to appear at a pre-fight press conference for UFC 137.

St-Pierre said he was confused by Diaz’s antics but the UFC was not going to risk promoting the Stockton native if he was wasn’t doing his job to sell the fight.

As a result, Diaz was demoted to the co-main event against BJ Penn.

St-Pierre is content with facing Condit, and despite being training partners, neither of them will seek assistance from head trainer Greg Jackson.

Jackson, who has been instrumental in both St-Pierre’s and Condit’s respective careers, said he would not take sides between the two teammates and he will not involve himself in their upcoming bout.

“He’s not going to be in my corner and he’s not going to work out with Condit and I, so he’s going to watch the fight on T.V that night and he’s going to enjoy the show,” he said.

St-Pierre understands the lack of interest surrounding this bout, but he is not looking past Condit as a credible contender.

Should he get past Condit, St-Pierre doesn’t rule out the possibility of facing Diaz.

“Nick Diaz was the fight everyone wanted to see, including myself, I wanted to fight the guy a lot, but what happened I cannot do nothing,” he said. “I might fight him another day.”

Following his recent win at UFC 135, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones looks to have a lot of confidence heading into his next bout against Rashad Evans

Jones, who successfully defended his title against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, endured an intense but awkward staredown with Evans during his postfight interview and looked determined to beat his rival.

Jones appeared on the Jim Rome Show to discuss his future bout against Evans and said he intends to put on another dominant performance.

“I’m going to try to make it the easiest fight of my career,” Jones said. “I don’t like Rashad and that’s going to motivate me. I have to work my butt off and just do everything necessary to make this fight look like the easiest fight of my career.”

Since their public fallout earlier this year, the former teammates have gone their separate ways. Evans now trains at Imperial Athletics in Boca Raton, Florida, while Jones has remained at Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts in Albuquerque, New Mexico, under the tutelage of trainers Greg Jackson and Mike Winklejohn.

Since then, Evans has been very vocal about Jones’ image and mentality as a fighter. He even revealed that he got the better of the champion in sparring sessions on several occasions during their time together at Jackson’s MMA

Jones is expected to make his next title defense against Evans, but he is currently on medical suspension after suffering a hand injury during his bout with Jackson last weekend.

A date for the upcoming title bout has yet to be announced.
