Dana White’s Fox Deal Makes UFC Top Sport of Future; Cements His Own Legacy

UFC president Dana White’s recent Fox television deal, which puts the UFC into the mainstream media world, means big things for a sport that has long awaited such a deal.

Say what you will of White, who is often blasted on forums and media like Twitter for his methods to his madness, but the UFC head has been a godsend since he and Zuffa rescued the sport quickly from the brink of destruction left from Semaphore Entertainment Group (SEG).

Since then, White has led the UFC into the Golden Age of MMA, with more relevance, interest and character than Art Davie (former UFC fight booker/matchmaker) ever had intentions of doing to the brand.

Not to say that the entire UFC promotion was built on the shoulder of Mr. White, because that would be a true discredit to the fighters in the sport who have given blood, sweat, tears and much more for the UFC. White, though, was the tactician behind, and in front of, the curtains.

He has been an integral part to the development of the sport, even from his early beginnings back during the days when he was sparring with the Marcus Davis and Joe Cavallaro’s of the world. Now he’s more prominent, but still the same old Dana White, who has dedicated his life to the sport he’s helped raise from the dead.

Whether you hate him or love him, White has got to be given credit at least for his transformation of the sport —the same transformation that had Senator John McCain backpedaling from his past statement calling the sport “human cockfighting.”

Now McCain says of the sport, “”The sport has grown up. The rules have been adopted to give its athletes better protections and to ensure fairer competition.”

Let’s make one thing even more crystal clear. White is not another Roger Goodell, Gary Bettman or Bud Selig. He works hard for the sport he loves, and he is loved by his general MMA following.

In short, White is the top dog of the world’s fasting growing sport, and eventually, the top future sport.

Biggest Winner: Tito Ortiz/Melvin Guillard

Tito Ortiz was by far the biggest winner from UFC 132. With a first round submission over Ryan Bader, Ortiz answered all the critics in a big way, myself included, saving his UFC career with the win.

How did Ortiz do it? It all started with a crisp right hand to the jaw of Bader, which sent him to the mat with Ortiz eventually sinking in the guillotine choke at 1:56 of the first round.

Where does this put Ortiz now?

Fans may see Ortiz against the winner of Franklin vs Lil Nog, though I’d personally like to see more integration of the Strikeforce merger, with Ortiz matching up against “King” Mo Lawal.

I also have Melvin Guillard as an option 1a for biggest winner award. He showed his power yet again against tough as nails Shane Roller, and his stock probably rose the most out of any fighter on tonight’s card.

Guillard has made it known prior to his fight against Roller that Jim Miller was the fight he wanted. That fight is more of a possibility now that Guillard dominated Roller at UFC 132

Biggest Loser: Ryan Bader/Wanderlei Silva

Ryan Bader’s stock dropped moderately with his loss against Jon Jones at UFC 126, but it has fallen off the radar after his loss to Tito Ortiz at UFC 132. Bader has now lost his last two in a row, and will likely take a little time off before facing a much lower ranked fighter likely.

I also feel that Wanderlei Silva was on the cusp of enjoying his 35th birthday tomorrow, but after slightly wobbling Leben, he found himself face down on the mat instead. He’s heading on the downside of his career, but it will be interesting to see who the UFC will match Wandy up against next.

UFC 131 Weekend Recap: Dos Santos Dominant, Florian Gets Aldo, Shaq with UFC?

After his August win over TUF season 10 winner Roy Nelson, Junior dos Santos had his coveted shot at the UFC heavyweight title.

Four months later, news broke that dos Santos would have to wait six to eight months due to a torn rotator cuff injury suffered by UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez during his October fight with then-champ Brock Lesnar.

Now, 10 months later, dos Santos has once again earned himself a title shot against Velasquez.

Dos Santos battered former UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin at UFC 131, winning a lopsided unanimous decision 30-27, 30-27, 30-26 against Carwin in front of 14,685 fans at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. The win once again cemented dos Santos as the No. 1 contender to Velaquez’s title, and the fight is expected to take place around November or December.

Florian Headed for Title Shot Against Jose Aldo

Kenny Florian will once again get his chance to shine in the spotlight against one of the UFC’s toughest champions.

The Massachusetts native Florian took home a unanimous decision against a very game Diego Nunes at UFC 131, likely making him the next opponent to take on UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

“I think Jose is one of the best in the game. I have a lot of respect for him, and I’m a big fan. Every UFC fighter’s dream is to be a champion. I don’t want to look too far ahead, but that’s [my goal],” said Florian.

White in essence confirmed Florian’s wish for a shot at the belt, saying, “I’ve got a lot of respect for him; he deserves a shot at the title. No doubt about it.”

Florian will look to succeed where many others have failed against Aldo—a list that includes former champions Mike Thomas Brown and Urijah Faber, as well as his most recent victory over Mark Hominick.

Shaq Expected to Have Role in UFC’s Future

UFC president Dana White went on ESPN’s First Take prior to UFC 131, and spoke to ESPN personality Mike Hill about the event, as well as Shaquille O’Neal’s future with the UFC. Here’s what White had to say about the newly-retired Shaq:

“Shaq’s been training for a long time, and actually a week before he retired, Shaq called me and said he wanted to be involved in the UFC somehow. He’s always been a good friend to us, and I’m sure you’re going to see Shaq around the UFC a lot.”

White also mentioned O’Neal’s heavy involvement in the first season of TUF, and O’Neal will likely be introduced in a similar manner as UFC legend Chuck Liddell was after he retired from the sport.

UFC 130 Picture of the Weekend: I’m Proud to Be an American

“And at least I know I’m free, and I won’t forget the men who died, that gave that right to me…”

On a weekend every American should take time to reflect and give thanks to the men and women who sacrifice everything for their homeland, Brian Stann proved that being American is the ultimate honor.

Memorial Day weekend 2011 is a little more special this year than many others, though. This year, Americans around the country can be especially proud of the work done in the last month that lifted a huge burden off the minds of those directly and indirectly affected by September 11, 2001, a day that is etched in the hearts of every American forever.

This year on Memorial Day, Patriots around the globe can be thankful for the covert mission accomplished earlier this May that killed Osama bin Laden. It is because of Marines, and ex-Marines, Air Force pilots, and ex-Air Force pilots, Army members, and ex-Army members, and the list goes on and on, that we can celebrate our freedom.

Stann’s win over Jorge Santiago was bigger than himself. It was a symbol of this weekend. It is freedom.

And I’ll gladly stand up, next to you, and defend her still today, ’cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land, GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.”

UFC 130 Results: Why Quinton "Rampage" Jackson Is Quite Undeserving of Jon Jones

Perhaps the biggest thing that UFC 130 proved to fans is that Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is not on the level of current budding champion Jon “Bones” Jones.

Credit the chin and will of Matt Hamill to Jackson’s inability to finish the fight against Hamill at UFC 130, but discredit Jackson’s excuse that his hand was fractured coming into the bout with Hamill. It should be an unwritten rule that fighters should not disclose injuries, especially as a possible excuse in a lackluster bout.

Jackson indeed tried his hardest to put away “The Hammer” landing almost double the amount of total strikes in the fight, 61-34. By far though, the most telling fact of the fight was Jackson’s takedown defense, stuffing all 17 attempts by Hamill en route to the decision victory.

With his win over Hamill, if Jackson skips over current No. 1 contender Rashad Evans or light heavyweight prospect Phil Davis, he’ll have his work cutout for him against Jones. If fans will remember correctly, it wasn’t till the third round of his fight with Evans when Jackson appeared to solve Evans, but still came out on the losing side of the decision. He’ll need a much better performance if he’s going to be the first man (aside from Hamill) to beat Jones.

The thing that is most difficult to understand is Rampage’s motivation. He’s publicly stated that he would like to retire at 35, leaving him with roughly two years remaining before he calls it quits.

Fighting current champ Jones may well be within that range of time, but Jackson’s no longer at the peak of his career and getting up for a fight of such a magnitude is, well, harder than it was many years ago for the MMA legend.

Nick and Nate Diaz and the Top Five Brother Duos Ever

Since MMA‘s inception, the general concept of family has been an integral part of a sport that is often billed as individualistic.

Now more than ever the sport has seen family competition, with fathers training sons, brothers fighting on the same cards, and overall family camaraderie on high display.

The Gracie family popularized the idea of one style being better than another, with numerous fighters and families have tried to disprove the Gracie theory, with not very many proving successful.

Take Royce Gracie for example at UFC 1. After his impressive wins over Art Jimmerson, Ken Shamrock, and Gerard Gordeau, Gracie realized his family’s true purpose: proving his family’s style was the best in the world. Surely a better feeling than any belt or dollar can give a fighter.

Flash forward to UFC 128 in New Jersey. Dan and Jim Miller of Sparta, N.J., fight in front of their hometown crowd at the Prudential Center. Though Dan lost and Jim won, nothing will take away the experience the brothers had that night.

And so, brotherly love has been redefined in and outside of the octagon. However, one question remaining is which brotherly duo is the best MMA has to offer?
