Chris Padilla made a memorable Octagon debut earlier tonight (Sat., April 27, 2024) at UFC Vegas 91 live on ESPN+ from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, stepping up on short notice to defeat fellow lightweight prospect James Llontop by first-round submission (rear-naked choke).

Llontop, who captured a win on Dana White’s Contender Series last September, was originally booked to fight veteran Lando Vannata. “Groovy” was forced out of the bout and replaced by Gabriel Green, who was eventually forced to withdraw as well. That’s when Padilla stepped up on short notice to make his own UFC debut.

The first round was a pretty even back-and-forth affair on the feet, but the second Padilla was able to use his grappling you saw that he was levels above Llontop. Padilla was able to grab a hold of a tight rear-naked choke and squeezed for the finish. LLontop, who has a submission loss on his record, ended up tapping with just under 30 seconds left in the round.

Check out the final moments in the above video player.

Padilla, 28, came into this fight riding a three fight win streak and coming off a TKO win over UFC veteran Justin Jaynes. “Taco” didn’t have much time at all to prepare for the biggest stage in combat sports, but he pulled through with flying colors. LLontop is a pretty solid prospect at 155 pounds and Padilla choked him out in one round. Pretty impressive.

Three-time UFC title challenger Colby Covington got an impromptu striking lesson from Ryan Garcia

After coming up short against reigning welterweight champion Leon Edwards at UFC 296 in December, Covington may be looking to develop his striking skills a bit. Especially with a heavily rumored clash against Irish star Ian Machado Garry looking more likely with each passing day.

Fortunately, ‘Chaos’ appears to know a guy who can help out.

In a clip shared by Chamatkar Sandhu on X, Covington got a crash course in striking courtesy of one of boxing’s biggest names.

Ryan Garcia sets his sights on becoming a world champion

Ryan Garcia has been the talk of the town ever since scoring a stunning majority decision victory over WBC super lightweight world champion Devin Haney on April 20.

Ryan Garcia

Garcia walked into the fight as a massive underdog after spending months convincing everyone he had suffered a complete mental breakdown on social media. As it turns out, it was nothing more than a ruse to fool his opponent and the sportsbooks.

Garcia reportedly placed a $2 million bet on himself to win the fight at +600 odds, turning his ticket into a $12 million payday, completing one of the greatest troll jobs of all time.

As for what comes next, Garcia appears to have set his sights on Sebastian Fundora, the current WBO and WBC super welterweight champion.

“I personally wanna beat up Fundora for the 154-pound title,” Garcia said on X. “I know he’s 6-foot-6, but I can knock him out cold. I will put Fundora to sleep.

Sebastian Fundora

Garcia’s motivation for challenging the much larger Fundora is simple

‘I need a title just to do it, just to shut people up,” Garcia added.

Initially, Garcia’s scrap with Haney was scheduled to be for the latter’s WBC crown, but after ‘King Ryan’ stepped on the scale more than three pounds over the 140-pound limit, the bout moved forward as a non-title fight.

Mike Perry will be all business later tonight (Sat., April 27, 2024) at BKFC KnuckleMania 4 live on YouTube pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Calif., when the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) contender puts his “King of Violence” title on the line against Thiago Alves in the main event.

Perry has taken over the world of bareknuckle boxing since coming over from UFC back in 2022. Under the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) banner, “Platinum” has amassed an undefeated record of 4-0 with key victories over Eddie Alvarez, Michael Page, and Luke Rockhold. Perry’s success inside of the ring and popularity among combat fans outside of it has made him the face of BKFC.

On Saturday, Perry will look to push his record to 5-0 with a win over Alves. “Pitbull” may be 40 years of age, but he’s 2-0 under the BKFC banner and still packs some serious knockout power. It will be up to Perry to tame the bull and once again overwhelm his opponent with aggression, toughness, and bareknuckle badassery.

As always, Perry is confident in his ability to inflict pain and believes he’ll be too much for Alves at BKFC KnuckleMania 4. “Platinum” delivered one final message to Alves on Friday and reassured fight fans of the carnage to come.

“It takes two to tango, bro,” said Perry during Friday’s official weigh ins (results HERE). “I’ve been excited to fight this guy for years. He ducked me last time. It’s time. He’s here. We’re going to show up in that ring tomorrow and I’m going to bust his sh-t up. It’s guaranteed. It’s fact.

“He can hit me, too, but I’m eating that sh-t for breakfast, lunch and dinner! I love to get punched in my face!”

Conor McGregor serves pints at Irish bar as part of final drinking session ahead of UFC 303 return fight

Confirming plans to end his drinking sessions ahead of preparation for his UFC 303 comeback fight later this summer, former two-divison champion, Conor McGregor was filmed behind the bar of a community pub in Meath overnight, pulling pints for fans.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight champion and featherweight gold holder under the banner of the UFC, is finally set to make his return to action this summer at UFC 303 during International Fight Week.

Booking a showdown with former lightweight title challenger, Michael Chandler, Dublin striker, McGregor is set to return to the welterweight limit for the first time since 2020 – which marked his most recent win in the form of a first round TKO win over Hall of Fame star, Donald Cerrone.

And welcoming Chandler back to the Octagon in tandem with his own return to active competition this summer atop UFC 303, Conor McGregor recently began his training camp in his native Dublin for his fight, sparring at long-time home base, Straight Blast Gym.

Vowing to enter a period of sobriety from his own founded Proper Number Twelve Irish whiskey and Forged Irish Stout last week as he prepares of his fight with Chandler, McGregor and members of his entourage attended a launch event at ‘Nanny’s’ bar in Duleek, Meath – where he enjoyed a tipple and poured pints for a bar of fans and regulars, in footage obtained by Bloody Elbow.

Backed to defeat Chandler with similar poise to his 2015 interim featherweight crown win against Chad Mendes, McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh claimed the bout against the former Bellator MMA lightweight kingpin would likely before the end of a second round.

“I see similarities to the (Chad) Mendes fight,” Kavanagh explained. “I’d be surprised if it can go two rounds. I’d be surprised. He just hits too hard. He’s too sharp. Is there gonna be scrappiness and take down stuff? Maybe. But, every round starts on the feet, and his ability to get back there is underestimated. So, I’d be surprised if we see two rounds.”

Do you think Conor McGregor beats Michael Chandler in his UFC 303 return?

RIZIN president slams ONE Championship's 'fund-based' survival scheme: 'It's like being on life support'

It’s safe to say that there is no love lost between RIZIN President Nobuyuki Sakakibara and ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong.

During a recent episode of RIZIN CONFESSIONS on YouTube, Sakakibara, who has ties to both PRIDE FC and K-1, recently spoke about the promotion’s move into South Korea. During his comments, Sakakibara insisted that Asian-based combat sports organizations should “bring the heat to Asia” before attempting to branch out into other markets.

It was a clear dig at one of RIZIN’s biggest rivals in Asia, ONE Championship, but Sakakibara didn’t stop there. He went for the jugular, calling out ONE’s sketchy “fund-based scheme” for survival, likening it to being on life support.

“There are many casinos getting built in Incheon and they just finished building an arena that holds 15,000,” Sakakibara said. “Bring the heat to Asia first. ONE struggled in Qatar. As far as we know, they’ve been burning a lot of cash and have running for the past 10 years. They’ve burnt hundreds of millions of dollars. We have a different approach. We’re not operating off a fund-based scheme. It’s like being on life support and once the pipe is detached, you can’t live on your own.

“From this point on, RIZIN will continue to promote events that will provide the emotional rollercoasters. Delivering events like that will eventually result in a sustainable business.”

RIZIN

At one point during the conversation, the interviewer asks Sakakibara about ONE Championship’s mission statement to promote the “values of integrity, humility, honor, respect, courage, discipline, and compassion,” suggesting that it sounds like something out of a “kid’s comic book.”

Sakakibara chuckles before saying: “Nobody got the message they wanted to say.”

RIZIN president President Nobuyuki and ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong have a long history of trading verbal jabs

It’s certainly not the first time that Sakakibara and Sityodtong have taken digs at one another in the media. During a press event last year, Sityodtong made his feelings on K-1 very clear.

“Honestly like… It’s a tiny organization, and the level is very low. I mean, the level of striking is very low.” Sityodtong said. “That’s all I’m going to say. That’s why Takeru [Segawa], the best striker in K-1 wants to leave and come to here. If you’re an expert striker, you understand what I’m talking about. The level is very low.”

Sityodtong’s comments about K-1 and kickboxing in general drew a response from Sakakibara during an interview with MMA Mania’s Drake Riggs.

“I honestly think them as promoters talking about a sport like that,” Sakakibara I don’t appreciate them talking like that. I think that’s an issue on their personal level because kickboxing is an amazing sport. It’s a fun sport. And, as a promoter, if you cannot promote that sport, you shouldn’t be doing it. I think there are a lot of great ways to promote a kickboxing fight. Kickboxing is interesting, it’s an entertaining sport.

“If you feel like it’s not happening, it’s a promoter’s fault that’s not doing their job. They’re not picking up the right points, they’re not promoting it right. So, I think, as a promoter, they shouldn’t be saying that to specific sports. If they’ve tried, and if they can’t do it, it’s up to them, and it’s their fault. We know how to promote interesting fights, and we make it interesting.”

ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong

ONE Championship made its promotional debut in Qatar on March 1. While the event was successful from a fan perspective, delivering some exciting action, including the crowning of MMA’s first simultaneous three-division world champion.

Anatoly Malykhin

Whether or not the event was a financial success is uncertain.

ONE is scheduled to return to the United States for a loaded lineup in The Mile High City — Denver, Colorado, on Friday, September 6. The promotion has already announced four massive matchups, including three champion vs. champion matches.

Reigning atomweight MMA queen Stamp Fairtex will challenge the defending ONE strawweight MMA world champion Xiong Jing Nan. Two-sport king Jonathan Haggerty puts his bantamweight Muay Thai title on the line against Thai superstar Superlek, and BJJ icon Mikey Musumeci moves up three weight classes to challenge Kade Ruotolo for the ONE lightweight submission grappling world championship.

British fan favorite Liam Harrison will also return to take on 201-win veteran Seksan Or Kwanmuang.
